    A hybrid fuzzy sliding mode controller is applied to the control of motorised tether spin-up coupled with an axial oscillation phenomenon. A six degree of freedom dynamic model of a motorised momentum exchange tether is used as a basis for interplanetary payload exchange. The tether comprises a symmetrical double payload configuration, with an outrigger counter inertia and massive central facility. It is shown that including axial elasticity permits an enhanced level of performance prediction accuracy and a useful departure from the usual rigid body representations, particularly for accurate payload positioning at strategic points. A special simulation program has been devised in MATLAB and MATHEMATICA for a given initial condition data case

    Switching control systems and their design automation via genetic algorithms

    The objective of this work is to provide a simple and effective nonlinear controller. Our strategy involves switching the underlying strategies in order to maintain a robust control. If a disturbance moves the system outside the region of stability or the domain of attraction, it will be guided back onto the desired course by the application of a different control strategy. In the context of switching control, the common types of controller present in the literature are based either on fuzzy logic or sliding mode. Both of them are easy to implement and provide efficient control for non-linear systems, their actions being based on the observed input/output behaviour of the system. In the field of fuzzy logic control (FLC) using error feedback variables there are two main problems. The first is the poor transient response (jerking) encountered by the conventional 2-dimensional rule-base fuzzy PI controller. Secondly, conventional 3-D rule-base fuzzy PID control design is both computationally intensive and suffers from prolonged design times caused by a large dimensional rule-base. The size of the rule base will increase exponentially with the increase of the number of fuzzy sets used for each input decision variable. Hence, a reduced rule-base is needed for the 3-term fuzzy controller. In this thesis a direct implementation method is developed that allows the size of the rule-base to be reduced exponentially without losing the features of the PID structure. This direct implementation method, when applied to the reduced rule-base fuzzy PI controller, gives a good transient response with no jerking

    Design of Adaptive Sliding Mode Fuzzy Control for Robot Manipulator Based on Extended Kalman Filter

    In this work, a new adaptive motion control scheme for robust performance control of robot manipulators is presented. The proposed scheme is designed by combining the fuzzy logic control with the sliding mode control based on extended Kalman filter. Fuzzy logic controllers have been used successfully in many applications and were shown to be superior to the classical controllers for some nonlinear systems. Sliding mode control is a powerful approach for controlling nonlinear and uncertain systems. It is a robust control method and can be applied in the presence of model uncertainties and parameter disturbances, provided that the bounds of these uncertainties and disturbances are known. We have designed a new adaptive Sliding Mode Fuzzy Control (SMFC) method that requires only position measurements. These measurements and the input torques are used in an extended Kalman filter (EKF) to estimate the inertial parameters of the full nonlinear robot model as well as the joint positions and velocities. These estimates are used by the SMFC to generate the input torques. The combination of the EKF and the SMFC is shown to result in a stable adaptive control scheme called trajectory-tracking adaptive robot with extended Kalman (TAREK) method. The theory behind TAREK method provides clear guidelines on the selection of the design parameters for the controller. The proposed controller is applied to a two-link robot manipulator. Computer simulations show the robust performance of the proposed scheme

    Design and Implementation of Takagi-Sugeno Fuzzy Tracking Control for a DC-DC Buck Converter

    This paper presents the design and implementation of a Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy controller for a DC-DC buck converter using Arduino board. The proposed fuzzy controller is able to pilot the states of the buck converter to track a reference model. The T-S fuzzy model is employed, firstly, to represent exactly the dynamics of the nonlinear buck converter system, and then the considered controller is designed on the basis of a concept called Virtual Desired Variables (VDVs). In this case, a two-stage design procedure is developed: i) determine the reference model according to the desired output voltage, ii) determine the fuzzy controller gains by solving a set of Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). A digital implementation of the proposed T-S fuzzy controller is carried out using the ATmega328P-based Microcontroller of the Arduino Uno board. Simulations and experimental results demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed control scheme

    This paper examines single input single output (SISO) chattering free variable structure control (VSC) which controller coefficient is on-line tuned by fuzzy backstepping algorithm. VSC methodology is selected as a framework to construct the control law and address the stability and robustness of the close loop system based on Lyapunove formulation. The main goal is to guarantee acceptable fuel ratio result and adjust. The proposed approach effectively combines the design technique from variable structure controller is based on Lyapunov and fuzzy estimator to estimate the nonlinearity of undefined system dynamic in backstepping controller. The input represents the function between variable structure function, error and the rate of error. The outputs represent fuel ratio, respectively. The fuzzy backstepping methodology is on-line tune the variable structure function based on adaptive methodology. The performance of the SISO VSC which controller coefficient is on-line tuned by fuzzy backstepping algorithm (FBSAVSC) is validated through comparison with VSC and proposed method.     Task-space dynamic control of underwater robots

    This thesis is concerned with the control aspects for underwater tasks performed by marine robots. The mathematical models of an underwater vehicle and an underwater vehicle with an onboard manipulator are discussed together with their associated properties. The task-space regulation problem for an underwater vehicle is addressed where the desired target is commonly specified as a point. A new control technique is proposed where the multiple targets are defined as sub-regions. A fuzzy technique is used to handle these multiple sub-region criteria effectively. Due to the unknown gravitational and buoyancy forces, an adaptive term is adopted in the proposed controller. An extension to a region boundary-based control law is then proposed for an underwater vehicle to illustrate the flexibility of the region reaching concept. In this novel controller, a desired target is defined as a boundary instead of a point or region. For a mapping of the uncertain restoring forces, a least-squares estimation algorithm and the inverse Jacobian matrix are utilised in the adaptive control law. To realise a new tracking control concept for a kinematically redundant robot, subregion tracking control schemes with a sub-tasks objective are developed for a UVMS. In this concept, the desired objective is specified as a moving sub-region instead of a trajectory. In addition, due to the system being kinematically redundant, the controller also enables the use of self-motion of the system to perform sub-tasks (drag minimisation, obstacle avoidance, manipulability and avoidance of mechanical joint limits)
