    An Improved Genetic-Shuffled Frog-Leaping Algorithm for Permutation Flowshop Scheduling

    Due to the NP-hard nature, the permutation flowshop scheduling problem (PFSSP) is a fundamental issue for Industry 4.0, especially under higher productivity, efficiency, and self-managing systems. This paper proposes an improved genetic-shuffled frog-leaping algorithm (IGSFLA) to solve the permutation flowshop scheduling problem. In the proposed IGSFLA, the optimal initial frog (individual) in the initialized group is generated according to the heuristic optimal-insert method with fitness constrain. The crossover mechanism is applied to both the subgroup and the global group to avoid the local optimal solutions and accelerate the evolution. To evolve the frogs with the same optimal fitness more outstanding, the disturbance mechanism is applied to obtain the optimal frog of the whole group at the initialization step and the optimal frog of the subgroup at the searching step. The mathematical model of PFSSP is established with the minimum production cycle (makespan) as the objective function, the fitness of frog is given, and the IGSFLA-based PFSSP is proposed. Experimental results have been given and analyzed, showing that IGSFLA not only provides the optimal scheduling performance but also converges effectively

    Investigation of reconfiguration effect on makespan with social network method for flexible job shop scheduling problem

    This paper presents a novel social network analysis based method (SNAM) to evaluate the reconfiguration effect i.e., identification of key machines and their influence on the system performance in the context of Flexible job shop scheduling problem (FJSSP). This research formulates a mathematical model along with the constraints by incorporating the total completion time of jobs as an objective function. The proposed SNAM has been applied to generate the collaboration networks by transforming the input data and presenting them in the form of an affiliation matrix to the network analysis software. Thereafter, to analyze the collaboration networks various SNA measures that have been calculated and different functional properties are evaluated. Finally, to investigate the reconfiguration effect on makespan integration of process planning and scheduling (IPPS) has been implemented with adopted effective game theory based hybrid deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) algorithm.     A multiobjective evolutionary algorithm for achieving energy efficiency in production environments integrated with multiple automated guided vehicles

    Increasing energy shortages and environmental pollution have made energy efficiency an urgent concern in manufacturing plants. Most studies looking into sustainable production in general and energy-efficient production scheduling in particular, however, have not paid much attention to logistical factors (e.g., transport and setup). This study integrates multiple automated guided vehicles (AGVs) into a job-shop environment. We propose a multiobjective scheduling model that considers machine processing, sequence-dependent setup and AGV transport, aiming to simultaneously minimize the makespan, total idle time of machines and total energy consumption of both machines and AGVs. To solve this problem, an effective multiobjective evolutionary algorithm (EMOEA) is developed. Within the EMOEA, an efficient encoding/decoding method is designed to represent and decode each solution. A new crossover operator is proposed for AGV assignment and AGV speed sequences. To balance the exploration and exploitation ability of the EMOEA, an opposition-based learning strategy is incorporated. A total of 75 benchmark instances and a real-world case are used for our experimental study. Taguchi analysis is applied to determine the best combination of key parameters for the EMOEA. Extensive computational experiments show that properly increasing the number of AGVs can shorten the waiting time of machines and achieve a balance between economic and environmental objectives for production systems. The experimental results confirm that the proposed EMOEA is significantly better at solving the problem than three other well-known algorithms. Our findings here have significant managerial implications for real-world manufacturing environments integrated with AGVs

    Overview of Multi-Objective Optimization Approaches in Construction Project Management

    The difficulties that are met in construction projects include budget issues, contractual time constraints, complying with sustainability rating systems, meeting local building codes, and achieving the desired quality level, to name but a few. Construction researchers have proposed and construction practitioners have used optimization strategies to meet various objectives over the years. They started out by optimizing one objective at a time (e.g., minimizing construction cost) while disregarding others. Because the objectives of construction projects often conflict with each other, single-objective optimization does not offer practical solutions as optimizing one objective would often adversely affect the other objectives that are not being optimized. They then experimented with multi-objective optimization. The many multi-objective optimization approaches that they used have their own advantages and drawbacks when used in some scenarios with different sets of objectives. In this chapter, a review is presented of 16 multi-objective optimization approaches used in 55 research studies performed in the construction industry and that were published in the period 2012–2016. The discussion highlights the strengths and weaknesses of these approaches when used in different scenarios

    Energy Efficient Policies, Scheduling, and Design for Sustainable Manufacturing Systems

    Climate mitigation, more stringent regulations, rising energy costs, and sustainable manufacturing are pushing researchers to focus on energy efficiency, energy flexibility, and implementation of renewable energy sources in manufacturing systems. This thesis aims to analyze the main works proposed regarding these hot topics, and to fill the gaps in the literature. First, a detailed literature review is proposed. Works regarding energy efficiency in different manufacturing levels, in the assembly line, energy saving policies, and the implementation of renewable energy sources are analyzed. Then, trying to fill the gaps in the literature, different topics are analyzed more in depth. In the single machine context, a mathematical model aiming to align the manufacturing power required to a renewable energy supply in order to obtain the maximum profit is developed. The model is applied to a single work center powered by the electric grid and by a photovoltaic system; afterwards, energy storage is also added to the power system. Analyzing the job shop context, switch off policies implementing workload approach and scheduling considering variable speed of the machines and power constraints are proposed. The direct and indirect workloads of the machines are considered to support the switch on/off decisions. A simulation model is developed to test the proposed policies compared to others presented in the literature. Regarding the job shop scheduling, a fixed and variable power constraints are considered, assuming the minimization of the makespan as the objective function. Studying the factory level, a mathematical model to design a flow line considering the possibility of using switch-off policies is developed. The design model for production lines includes a targeted imbalance among the workstations to allow for defined idle time. Finally, the main findings, results, and the future directions and challenges are presented

    Variant-oriented Planning Models for Parts/Products Grouping, Sequencing and Operations

    This research aims at developing novel methods for utilizing the commonality between part/product variants to make modern manufacturing systems more flexible, adaptable, and agile for dealing with less volume per variant and minimizing total changes in the setup between variants. Four models are developed for use in four important domains of manufacturing systems: production sequencing, product family formation, production flow, and products operations sequences retrieval. In all these domains, capitalizing on commonality between the part/product variants has a pivotal role. For production sequencing; a new policy based on setup similarity between product variants is proposed and its results are compared with a developed mathematical model in a permutation flow shop. The results show the proposed algorithm is capable of finding solutions in less than 0.02 seconds with an average error of 1.2%. For product family formation; a novel operation flow based similarity coefficient is developed for variants having networked structures and integrated with two other similarity coefficients, operation and volume similarity, to provide a more comprehensive similarity coefficient. Grouping variants based on the proposed integrated similarity coefficient improves changeover time and utilization of the system. A sequencing method, as a secondary application of this approach, is also developed. For production flow; a new mixed integer programing (MIP) model is developed to assign operations of a family of product variants to candidate machines and also to select the best place for each machine among the candidate locations. The final sequence of performing operations for each variant having networked structures is also determined. The objective is to minimize the total backtracking distance leading to an improvement in total throughput of the system (7.79% in the case study of three engine blocks). For operations sequences retrieval; two mathematical models and an algorithm are developed to construct a master operation sequence from the information of the existing variants belonging to a family of parts/products. This master operation sequence is used to develop the operation sequences for new variants which are sufficiently similar to existing variants. Using the proposed algorithm decreases time of developing the operations sequences of new variants to the seconds
