Multimedia delivery in the future internet
The term “Networked Media” implies that all kinds of media including text, image, 3D graphics, audio
and video are produced, distributed, shared, managed and consumed on-line through various networks,
like the Internet, Fiber, WiFi, WiMAX, GPRS, 3G and so on, in a convergent manner [1]. This white
paper is the contribution of the Media Delivery Platform (MDP) cluster and aims to cover the Networked
challenges of the Networked Media in the transition to the Future of the Internet.
Internet has evolved and changed the way we work and live. End users of the Internet have been confronted
with a bewildering range of media, services and applications and of technological innovations concerning
media formats, wireless networks, terminal types and capabilities. And there is little evidence that the pace
of this innovation is slowing. Today, over one billion of users access the Internet on regular basis, more
than 100 million users have downloaded at least one (multi)media file and over 47 millions of them do so
regularly, searching in more than 160 Exabytes1 of content. In the near future these numbers are expected
to exponentially rise. It is expected that the Internet content will be increased by at least a factor of 6, rising
to more than 990 Exabytes before 2012, fuelled mainly by the users themselves. Moreover, it is envisaged
that in a near- to mid-term future, the Internet will provide the means to share and distribute (new)
multimedia content and services with superior quality and striking flexibility, in a trusted and personalized
way, improving citizens’ quality of life, working conditions, edutainment and safety.
In this evolving environment, new transport protocols, new multimedia encoding schemes, cross-layer inthe
network adaptation, machine-to-machine communication (including RFIDs), rich 3D content as well as
community networks and the use of peer-to-peer (P2P) overlays are expected to generate new models of
interaction and cooperation, and be able to support enhanced perceived quality-of-experience (PQoE) and
innovative applications “on the move”, like virtual collaboration environments, personalised services/
media, virtual sport groups, on-line gaming, edutainment. In this context, the interaction with content
combined with interactive/multimedia search capabilities across distributed repositories, opportunistic P2P
networks and the dynamic adaptation to the characteristics of diverse mobile terminals are expected to
contribute towards such a vision.
Based on work that has taken place in a number of EC co-funded projects, in Framework Program 6 (FP6)
and Framework Program 7 (FP7), a group of experts and technology visionaries have voluntarily
contributed in this white paper aiming to describe the status, the state-of-the art, the challenges and the way
ahead in the area of Content Aware media delivery platforms
Intent-based zero-touch service chaining layer for software-defined edge cloud networks
Edge Computing, along with Software Defined Networking and Network Function Virtualization, are causing network infrastructures to become as distributed clouds extended to the edge with services provided as dynamically established sequences of virtualized functions (i.e., dynamic service chains) thereby elastically addressing different processing requirements of application data flows. However, service operators and application developers are not inclined to deal with descriptive configuration directives to establish and operate services, especially in case of service chains. Intent-based Networking is emerging as a novel approach that simplifies network management and automates the implementation of network operations required by applications. This paper presents an intent-based zero-touch service chaining layer that provides the programmable provision of service chain paths in edge cloud networks. In addition to the dynamic and elastic deployment of data delivery services, the intent-based layer offers an automated adaptation of the service chains paths according to the application's goals expressed in the intent to recover from sudden congestion events in the SDN network. Experiments have been carried out in an emulated network environment to show the feasibility of the approach and to evaluate the performance of the intent layer in terms of network resource usage and adaptation overhead
Towards video streaming in IoT environments: vehicular communication perspective
Multimedia oriented Internet of Things (IoT) enables pervasive and real-time communication of video, audio and image data among devices in an immediate surroundings. Today's vehicles have the capability of supporting real time multimedia acquisition. Vehicles with high illuminating infrared cameras and customized sensors can communicate with other on-road devices using dedicated short-range communication (DSRC) and 5G enabled communication technologies. Real time incidence of both urban and highway vehicular traffic environment can be captured and transmitted using vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication modes. Video streaming in vehicular IoT (VSV-IoT) environments is in growing stage with several challenges that need to be addressed ranging from limited resources in IoT devices, intermittent connection in vehicular networks, heterogeneous devices, dynamism and scalability in video encoding, bandwidth underutilization in video delivery, and attaining application-precise quality of service in video streaming. In this context, this paper presents a comprehensive review on video streaming in IoT environments focusing on vehicular communication perspective. Specifically, significance of video streaming in vehicular IoT environments is highlighted focusing on integration of vehicular communication with 5G enabled IoT technologies, and smart city oriented application areas for VSV-IoT. A taxonomy is presented for the classification of related literature on video streaming in vehicular network environments. Following the taxonomy, critical review of literature is performed focusing on major functional model, strengths and weaknesses. Metrics for video streaming in vehicular IoT environments are derived and comparatively analyzed in terms of their usage and evaluation capabilities. Open research challenges in VSV-IoT are identified as future directions of research in the area. The survey would benefit both IoT and vehicle industry practitioners and researchers, in terms of augmenting understanding of vehicular video streaming and its IoT related trends and issues
Service-Driven Networking
This thesis presents our research on service-driven networking, which is a general design framework for service quality assurance and integrated network and service management in
large scale multi-domain networks. The philosophy is to facilitate bi-party open participation among the users and the
providers of network services in order to bring about better service customization and quality assurance, without sacrificing the autonomy and objectives of the individual
entities. Three primary research topics are documented: service composition and adaptation, self-stabilization in uncoordinated environment, and service quality modeling. The work involves
theoretical analysis, algorithm design, and simulations as evaluation methodology
Management of Temporally and Spatially Correlated Failures in Federated Message Oriented Middleware for Resilient and QoS-Aware Messaging Services.
PhDMessage Oriented Middleware (MOM) is widely recognized as a promising solution for the communications between heterogeneous distributed systems. Because the resilience and quality-of-service of the messaging substrate plays a critical role in the overall system performance, the evolution of these distributed systems has introduced new requirements for MOM, such as inter domain federation, resilience and QoS support.
This thesis focuses on a management frame work that enhances the Resilience and QoS-awareness of MOM, called RQMOM, for federated enterprise systems. A common hierarchical MOM architecture for the federated messaging service is assumed. Each bottom level local domain comprises a cluster of neighbouring brokers that carry a local messaging service, and inter domain messaging are routed through the gateway brokers of the different local domains over the top level federated overlay. Some challenges and solutions for the intra and inter domain messaging are researched.
In local domain messaging the common cause of performance degradation is often the fluctuation of workloads which might result in surge of total workload on a broker and overload its processing capacity, since a local domain is often within a well connected network. Against performance degradation, a combination of novel proactive risk-aware workload allocation, which exploits the co-variation between workloads, in addition to existing reactive load balancing is designed and evaluated.
In federated inter domain messaging an overlay network of federated gateway brokers distributed in separated geographical locations, on top of the heterogeneous physical network is considered. Geographical correlated failures are threats to cause major interruptions and damages to such systems. To mitigate this rarely addressed challenge, a novel geographical location aware route selection algorithm to support uninterrupted messaging is introduced. It is used with existing overlay routing mechanisms, to maintain routes and hence provide more resilient messaging against geographical correlated failures

and seamless mobility implies strict requirements that
cannot be satisfactorily addressed by the traditional transport control
architectures for session content delivery. Moreover, context-aware
networks introduce personalized concepts: any change in context
can change the overall services and network environments, requiring
the network and multicast sessions to be completely restructured in a
very dynamic way.
Regarding the complexity of maintaining scalability in context-aware
networks, this Thesis has as main goal the development of an
intelligent module, included in C-CAST architecture, capable of
managing the entire network scheme. This mechanism depending on
the scenario and the context of users and sources, and in
cooperation with other network entities, must decide the most
suitable network transport path in order to provide the best multiparty
content delivery to the users, and manage the dynamicity of the
network whenever changes occur. To perform its implementation, it
was used an approach based in the interaction of different network
components, exchanging context information between them. The
intelligent module, using the updated network information, decides
the better network connection to serve each user.
In order to simulate the network behaviour in various situations,
several scenarios were tested to evaluate its performance. The
network is evaluated according to the several configured parameters,
evaluating the improvements achieved in the network performance
concerning different metrics, e.g. delay, lost packets ratio, overhead
introduced by the architecture signalling. Through the implemented
simulation setup, it is possible to conclude that the deployment of the
solution proposed effectively provides an enhanced service to the
users, distributing the multiparty content with QoS assurance using
context information.O aumento da exigência em serviços de grupo, redes baseadas em
contexto e mobilidade transparente implicam requisitos rĂgidos que
nĂŁo podem ser satisfeitos pelas arquitecturas tradicionais de controlo
de transporte para entrega de conteĂşdos de sessĂŁo. NĂŁo obstante,
redes baseadas em contexto introduzem conceitos personalizados:
qualquer mudança no contexto pode mudar completamente os
serviços e a própria rede, sendo necessário que a rede e as sessões
multicast sejam completamente reestruturadas de uma forma
dinâmica.
Tendo em conta a complexidade de manter a escalabilidade em
redes baseadas em contexto, esta Tese tem como principal objectivo
o desenvolvimento de um mĂłdulo inteligente, que faz parte da
arquitectura do projecto C-CAST, capaz de gerir toda a rede. Este
mecanismo, dependendo do cenário da rede e do contexto dos
utilizadores e das fontes, e em cooperação com outras entidades da
rede, deve seleccionar a o caminho mais apropriado da rede de
modo a fornecer da melhor forma o conteĂşdo aos utilizadores, e gerir
a dinâmicidade da rede sempre que ocorrem mudanças. Para o
implementar foi usada um método baseado na interacção de vários
componentes, que trocam informação sobre contextos entre eles. O
componente inteligente, usando informação actualizada da rede
decide qual a melhor conexĂŁo da rede para servir cada utilizador.
De forma a simular o comportamento da rede em várias situações,
foram testados diversos cenários para avaliar a sua performance. A
rede é avaliada de acordo com os vários parâmetros configurados,
avaliando as melhorias conseguidas na performance da rede, por
exemplo em termos de atrasos, rácio de pacotes perdidos e a carga
imposta pelas mensagens de controlo da arquitectura. Através das
simulações efectuadas Ă© possĂvel concluir que aplicando a
arquitectura proposta, é fornecido de forma eficiente um serviço
melhorado aos utilizadores, distribuindo o serviço de grupo com
garantias de Qualidade de Serviço e usando informação de contexto
Avaliação de controlo de sessões multicast em redes com contexto
Mestrado em Engenharia Electrónica e TelecomunicaçõesOs utilizadores pretendem aceder, cada vez mais, a serviços multimédia com
requisitos mais exigentes e personalizados. As limitações impostas pelos
ambientes existentes (internet, 3G) para fornecer estes serviços levam Ă
procura de melhores soluções, nomeadamente uma gestão eficaz das sessões
multiparty. Neste tipo de soluções é normalmente utilizado o multicast, já que
este permite reduzir os recursos utilizados, diminuindo o nĂşmero de pacotes na
rede. Contudo, o multicast nĂŁo está consistente ao nĂvel dos cenários de
mobilidade, fundamentais nas redes de próxima geração.
Actualmente existe uma vasta gama de tecnologias de acesso sem fios como
WiFi, GPRS, UMTS e WiMAX. No futuro estas tecnologias diferentes
complementar-se-ão convergindo numa infra-estrutura heterogénea capaz de
fornecer um melhor serviço aos utilizadores, denominadas de redes 4G. A
evolução dos terminais móveis também permitirá que estes se liguem
simultaneamente a várias redes de acesso. Para uma melhor distribuição dos
serviços dos utilizadores pelas redes de acesso disponĂveis sĂŁo necessários
novos mecanismos de selecção. Uma nova selecção da rede baseada em
informação de contexto (entidades e ambiente) tem tido grande relevo na
comunidade cientĂfica. Assim, aplicações e rede reagem a alterações de
contexto para uma melhor selecção da mesma.
A dissertação apresentada encontra-se no âmbito do transporte multiparty com
informação de contexto e reserva de recursos, permitindo a entrega do
conteúdo de uma forma personalizada e com Qualidade de Serviço a vários
utilizadores mĂłveis, independentemente da tecnologia de acesso de cada um
e da prĂłpria tecnologia da rede. Em suma, Ă© utilizada uma arquitectura de rede
baseada em informação de contexto e que reage eficazmente a alterações do
mesmo.
De forma a implementar a proposta apresentada recorreu-se à criação de
várias entidades no simulador de redes NS-2. Os resultados foram obtidos
usando diferentes cenários, avaliando a influência de cada parâmetro
individualmente. Demonstrou-se que a arquitectura implementada permite
suportar uma entrega dos conteĂşdos de uma maneira personalizada e
independente da tecnologia utilizada. Obteve-se ainda uma boa gestĂŁo dos
recursos da rede e uma melhoria na experiĂŞncia percepcionada pelo utilizador
através da selecção total da rede com base numa entidade de controlo central.
A introdução do overlay de transporte multiparty melhora o comportamento
geral da rede, minimizando as reconfigurações frequentes necessárias.Nowadays, more and more users want to access multimedia services with
strong and personalized requirements. The limitations intrinsic to current
environments (Internet and 3G) to provide this type of services motivate the
research for an efficient management of multiparty sessions. The solution can
also be based on multicast implementation, since it reduces resources
utilization, decreasing the number of packets in the network. However, current
multicast is not a strong solution in mobility scenarios, essential in next
generation networks.
Currently there is a wide range of wireless access technologies such as WiFi,
GPRS, UMTS and WiMAX. In the future, these different technologies will
converge in a complementary manner forming a heterogeneous infrastructure
able to offer a better service to its users, usually named 4G. The evolution of
mobile terminals will also allow them to connect simultaneously to several
access networks. In order to a better distribution of the users services
throughout available access networks, new selection mechanisms are required.
A new network selection based on context information (entities and
environments) is having a relevant role in scientific community. So, applications
and networks react according to context changes, improving network selection.
This Thesis is in the scope of context-aware multiparty transport with resources
allocation, allowing the delivery of content in a personalized way with Quality of
Service to several users, independently of the technology and the network.
Resuming, the solution implements a context-aware network architecture that
reacts efficiently to its changes.
In order to implement this architecture, new entities were created in the network
simulator NS-2. The results were obtained using different scenarios, evaluating
the influence of each parameter independently. It was demonstrated that the
integration of several components, allows a delivery of contents in a
personalized manner and independently of the technology. The results showed
a better management of the network resources and users experience,
throughout the total network selection, based on a central control unit. The
multiparty transport overlay improves the network behaviour, minimizing the
necessary frequent reconfigurations
Hybrid SDN Evolution: A Comprehensive Survey of the State-of-the-Art
Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is an evolutionary networking paradigm
which has been adopted by large network and cloud providers, among which are
Tech Giants. However, embracing a new and futuristic paradigm as an alternative
to well-established and mature legacy networking paradigm requires a lot of
time along with considerable financial resources and technical expertise.
Consequently, many enterprises can not afford it. A compromise solution then is
a hybrid networking environment (a.k.a. Hybrid SDN (hSDN)) in which SDN
functionalities are leveraged while existing traditional network
infrastructures are acknowledged. Recently, hSDN has been seen as a viable
networking solution for a diverse range of businesses and organizations.
Accordingly, the body of literature on hSDN research has improved remarkably.
On this account, we present this paper as a comprehensive state-of-the-art
survey which expands upon hSDN from many different perspectives
Traffic and task allocation in networks and the cloud
Communication services such as telephony, broadband and TV are increasingly migrating into Internet Protocol(IP) based networks because of the consolidation of telephone and data networks. Meanwhile, the increasingly wide application of Cloud Computing enables the accommodation of tens of thousands of applications from the general public or enterprise users which make use of Cloud services on-demand through IP networks such as the Internet. Real-Time services over IP (RTIP) have also been increasingly significant due to the convergence of network services, and the real-time needs of the Internet of Things (IoT) will strengthen this trend. Such Real-Time applications have strict Quality of Service (QoS) constraints, posing a major challenge for IP networks. The Cognitive Packet Network (CPN) has been designed as a QoS-driven protocol that addresses user-oriented QoS demands by adaptively routing packets based on online sensing and measurement. Thus in this thesis we first describe our design for a novel ``Real-Time (RT) traffic over CPN'' protocol which uses QoS goals that match the needs of voice packet delivery in the presence of other background traffic under varied traffic conditions; we present its experimental evaluation via measurements of key QoS metrics such as packet delay, delay variation (jitter) and packet loss ratio. Pursuing our investigation of packet routing in the Internet, we then propose a novel Big Data and Machine Learning approach for real-time Internet scale Route Optimisation based on Quality-of-Service using an overlay network, and evaluate is performance. Based on the collection of data sampled each minutes over a large number of source-destinations pairs, we observe that intercontinental Internet Protocol (IP) paths are far from optimal with respect to metrics such as end-to-end round-trip delay. On the other hand, our machine learning based overlay network routing scheme exploits large scale data collected from communicating node pairs to select overlay paths, while it uses IP between neighbouring overlay nodes. We report measurements over a week long experiment with several million data points shows substantially better end-to-end QoS than is observed with pure IP routing. Pursuing the machine learning approach, we then address the challenging problem of dispatching incoming tasks to servers in Cloud systems so as to offer the best QoS and reliable job execution; an experimental system (the Task Allocation Platform) that we have developed is presented and used to compare several task allocation schemes, including a model driven algorithm, a reinforcement learning based scheme, and a ``sensible’’ allocation algorithm that assigns tasks to sub-systems that are observed to provide lower response time. These schemes are compared via measurements both among themselves and against a standard round-robin scheduler, with two architectures (with homogenous and heterogenous hosts having different processing capacities) and the conditions under which the different schemes offer better QoS are discussed. Since Cloud systems include both locally based servers at user premises and remote servers and multiple Clouds that can be reached over the Internet, we also describe a smart distributed system that combines local and remote Cloud facilities, allocating tasks dynamically to the service that offers the best overall QoS, and it includes a routing overlay which minimizes network delay for data transfer between Clouds. Internet-scale experiments that we report exhibit the effectiveness of our approach in adaptively distributing workload across multiple Clouds.Open Acces
