Integrated Support for Handoff Management and Context-Awareness in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks
The overwhelming success of mobile devices and wireless
communications is stressing the need for the development of
mobility-aware services. Device mobility requires services
adapting their behavior to sudden context changes and being
aware of handoffs, which introduce unpredictable delays and
intermittent discontinuities. Heterogeneity of wireless
technologies (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G) complicates the situation,
since a different treatment of context-awareness and handoffs is
required for each solution. This paper presents a middleware
architecture designed to ease mobility-aware service
development. The architecture hides technology-specific
mechanisms and offers a set of facilities for context awareness
and handoff management. The architecture prototype works with
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, which today represent two of the most
widespread wireless technologies. In addition, the paper discusses
motivations and design details in the challenging context of
mobile multimedia streaming applications
Adding Policy-based Control to Mobile Hosts Switching between Streaming Proxies
We add a simple policy-based control component to mobile hosts that enables them to control the continuous reception of live multimedia content (e.g. a TV broadcast) while they switch between different distributors of that content. Policy-based control provides a flexible means to automate the switching behavior of mobile hosts. The policies react to changes in the mobile host's environment (e.g. when a hotspot network appears) and determine when and how to invoke an earlier developed application-level protocol to discover the capabilities (e.g. supported encodings) of the content distributors and to execute the switches. The design of the control component is based on the IETF policy model, but extended and applied at the application-level instead of at the network-level. We implemented the system and deployed it in a small-scale test bed
Addressing the Challenges in Federating Edge Resources
This book chapter considers how Edge deployments can be brought to bear in a
global context by federating them across multiple geographic regions to create
a global Edge-based fabric that decentralizes data center computation. This is
currently impractical, not only because of technical challenges, but is also
shrouded by social, legal and geopolitical issues. In this chapter, we discuss
two key challenges - networking and management in federating Edge deployments.
Additionally, we consider resource and modeling challenges that will need to be

Perceptual multimedia quality: Implications of an empirical study
Copyright @ 2005 HCI InternationalIf commercial multimedia development continues to ignore the user-perspective in preference of other factors, i.e. user fascination (i.e. the latest gimmick), then companies ultimately risk alienating the customer. Moreover, by ignoring the user-perspective, future distributed multimedia systems risk ignoring accessibility issues, by excluding access for users with abnormal perceptual requirements. This paper presents an extensive examination of distributed multimedia quality. We define a model that considers multimedia quality from three distinct levels: the network, the media- and the content-levels; and two views: the technical- and the user-perspective. By manipulating both technical and user-perspective parameters, we examine the impact on quality perception at the three quality levels identified. Results show that: a significant reduction in frame rate does not proportionally reduce the user's understanding of the presentation, independent of technical parameters; the type of video clip significantly impacts user information assimilation, user level of enjoyment and user perception of quality; the display type impacts user information assimilation and user perception of quality. Finally, to ensure transfer of informational content, network parameter variation should be adapted; to maintain user enjoyment, video content variation should be adapted
Size Matters: Microservices Research and Applications
In this chapter we offer an overview of microservices providing the
introductory information that a reader should know before continuing reading
this book. We introduce the idea of microservices and we discuss some of the
current research challenges and real-life software applications where the
microservice paradigm play a key role. We have identified a set of areas where

A people-oriented paradigm for smart cities
Most works in the literature agree on considering the Internet of Things (IoT) as the base technology to collect information related to smart cities. This information is usually offered as open data for its analysis, and to elaborate statistics or provide services which improve the management of the city, making it more efficient and more comfortable to live in. However, it is not possible to actually improve the quality of life of smart cities’ inhabitants if there is no direct information about them and their experiences. To address this problem, we propose using a social and mobile computation model, called the Internet of People (IoP) which empowers smartphones to recollect information about their users, analyze it to obtain knowledge about their habits, and provide this knowledge as a service creating a collaborative information network. Combining IoT and IoP, we allow the smart city to dynamically adapt its services to the needs of its citizens, promoting their welfare as the main objective of the city.Universidad de Málaga.
