    Integration of aerial and terrestrial locomotion modes in a bioinspired robotic system

    In robotics, locomotion is a fundamental task for the development of high-level activities such as navigation. For a robotic system, the challenge of evading environmental obstacles depends both on its physical capabilities and on the strategies followed to achieve it. Thus, a robot with the ability to develop several modes of locomotion (walking, flying or swimming) has a greater probability of success in achieving its goal than a robot that develops only one. In nature, Hymenoptera insects use terrestrial and aerial modes of locomotion to carry out their activities. Mimicry the physical capabilities of these insects opens the possibility of improvements in the area of robotic locomotion. Therefore, this work seeks to generate a bio-inspired robotic system that integrates the terrestrial and aerial modes of locomotion. The methodology used in this research project has considered the anatomical study and characterization of Hymenoptera insects locomotion, the proposal of conceptual models that integrate terrestrial and aerial modes locomotion, the construction of a physical platform and experimental testing of the system. In addition, a gait generation approach based on an artificial nervous system of coupled nonlinear oscillators has been proposed. This approach has resulted in the generation of a coherent and functional gait pattern that, in combination with the flight capabilities of the system, has constituted an aero-terrestrial robot. The results obtained in this work include the construction of a bioinspired physical platform, the generation of the gait process using an artificial nervous system and the experimental tests on the integration of aero-terrestrial locomotion.Conacyt - Becario Naciona

    Evolving controllers for robots with multimodal locomotion

    Animals have inspired numerous studies on robot locomotion, but the problem of how autonomous robots can learn to take advantage of multimodal locomotion remains largely unexplored. In this paper, we study how a robot with two different means of locomotion can effective learn when to use each one based only on the limited information it can obtain through its onboard sensors. We conduct a series of simulation-based experiments using a task where a wheeled robot capable of jumping has to navigate to a target destination as quickly as possible in environments containing obstacles. We apply evolutionary techniques to synthesize neural controllers for the robot, and we analyze the evolved behaviors. The results show that the robot succeeds in learning when to drive and when to jump. The results also show that, compared with unimodal locomotion, multimodal locomotion allows for simpler and higher performing behaviors to evolve.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

    System-Engineered Miniaturized Robots: From Structure to Intelligence

    The development of small machines, once envisioned by Feynman decades ago, has stimulated significant research in materials science, robotics, and computer science. Over the past years, the field of miniaturized robotics has rapidly expanded with many research groups contributing to the numerous challenges inherent to this field. Smart materials have played a particularly important role as they have imparted miniaturized robots with new functionalities and distinct capabilities. However, despite all efforts and many available soft materials and innovative technologies, a fully autonomous system-engineered miniaturized robot (SEMR) of any practical relevance has not been developed yet. In this review, the foundation of SEMRs is discussed and six main areas (structure, motion, sensing, actuation, energy, and intelligence) which require particular efforts to push the frontiers of SEMRs further are identified. During the past decade, miniaturized robotic research has mainly relied on simplicity in design, and fabrication. A careful examination of current SEMRs that are physically, mechanically, and electrically engineered shows that they fall short in many ways concerning miniaturization, full-scale integration, and self-sufficiency. Some of these issues have been identified in this review. Some are inevitably yet to be explored, thus, allowing to set the stage for the next generation of intelligent, and autonomously operating SEMRs

    thesisThis thesis focuses on the design, modeling, fabrication, and testing of a ?ying and walking robot, called the Dynamic Underactuated Flying-Walking (DUCK) robot. The DUCK robot combines a high-mobility ?ying platform, such as a quadcopter (quadrotor helicopter), with passive-dynamic legs to create a versatile system that can ?y and walk. One of the advantages of using passive-dynamic legs for walking is that additional actuators are not needed for terrestrial locomotion, therefore simplifying the design, reducing overall weight, and decreasing power consumption. First, a mathematical model is developed for the DUCK robot, where the modeling combines the passive-dynamic walking mechanism with the swinging mass of the aerial platform. Second, simulations based on the model are used to help guide the design of two prototype robots, speci?cally to tailor the shape of the feet and the dimensions of the passive-dynamic walking mechanism. Third, an energy analysis is performed to compare the performances between ?ying and walking. More specifically, simulation results show that continuous active walking has a comparable energy efficiency to that of flying for the two prototype designs. For design Version 1, it is estimated that the robot is able to walk up to 1600 meters on a 30kJ battery (standard Li-Po battery) with a cost of transport of 1.0, while the robot can potentially fly up to 1800 meters horizontally with the weight of its legs and up to 2300 meters without the weight of its legs. Design Version 2 is estimated to be able to walk up to 4600 meters on a 30kJ battery with a cost of transport of .50, while it could fly up to 2600 meters with the weight of its legs or 4300 meters without its legs. The cost of transport of flying is estimated to be .89 in all scenarios. Finally, experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of combining an aerial platform with passive-dynamic legs to create an effective flying and walking robot. Two modes of walking are experimentally demonstrated: (1) passive walking down inclined surfaces for low-energy terrestrial locomotion and (2) active (powered) walking leveraging the capabilities of the flying platform, where thrust from the quadcopter's rotors enables the DUCK robot to walk on flat surfaces or up inclined surfaces

    Locomotion response of airborne, ambulatory and aquatic insects to thermal stimulation using piezoceramic microheaters

    This paper reports the locomotion response of airborne, ambulatory and aquatic insects to thermal stimulation. A finite element model has been developed to predict the variation of insect–stimulator interface temperature with input power. Piezothermal stimulators have been fabricated from lead zirconate titanate (PZT) using a batch mode micro ultrasonic machining process. Typical sizes range from 200 µm to 3.2 mm. For PZT stimulators, the temperature and thermal efficiency reach the maximum value around the resonance frequency which is typically in the range of 650 kHz to 47 MHz. Experiments have been conducted on green June beetles (GJBs), Madagascar hissing roaches and green diving beetles (GDBs) in order to show the versatility of the proposed technique. The stimulators have been implanted near the antennae of the GJBs and on either side of the thorax of the Madagascar hissing roaches and GDBs, respectively. In all cases, the insects move away from the direction of the actuated stimulator. The left and right turns are statistically similar. Thermal stimulation achieves an overall success rate of 78.7%, 92.8% and 61.6% in GJBs, roaches and GDBs, respectively. On average, thermal stimulation results in an angle turn of about 13.7°–16.2° on GJBs, 30°–45° on the roaches and 30°–50° on GDBs. The corresponding average input power is 360, 330 and 100 mW for GJBs, roach and GDBs, respectively.     Evaluation of the utility and performance of an autonomous surface vehicle for mobile monitoring of waterborne biochemical agents

    Real-time water quality monitoring is crucial due to land utilization increases which can negatively impact aquatic ecosystems from surface water runoff. Conventional monitoring methodologies are laborious, expensive, and spatio-temporally limited. Autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs), equipped with sensors/instrumentation, serve as mobile sampling stations that reduce labor and enhance data resolution. However, ASV autopilot navigational accuracy is affected by environmental forces (wind, current, and waves) that can alter trajectories of planned paths and negatively affect spatio-temporal resolution of water quality data. This study demonstrated a commercially available solar powered ASV equipped with a multi-sensor payload ability to operate autonomously to accurately and repeatedly maintain established A-B line transects under varying environmental conditions, where lateral deviation from a planned linear route was measured and expressed as cross-track error (XTE). This work provides a framework for development of spatial/temporal resolution limitations of ASVs for real-time monitoring campaigns and future development of in-situ sampling technologies
