    Control-data separation architecture for cellular radio access networks: a survey and outlook

    Conventional cellular systems are designed to ensure ubiquitous coverage with an always present wireless channel irrespective of the spatial and temporal demand of service. This approach raises several problems due to the tight coupling between network and data access points, as well as the paradigm shift towards data-oriented services, heterogeneous deployments and network densification. A logical separation between control and data planes is seen as a promising solution that could overcome these issues, by providing data services under the umbrella of a coverage layer. This article presents a holistic survey of existing literature on the control-data separation architecture (CDSA) for cellular radio access networks. As a starting point, we discuss the fundamentals, concepts, and general structure of the CDSA. Then, we point out limitations of the conventional architecture in futuristic deployment scenarios. In addition, we present and critically discuss the work that has been done to investigate potential benefits of the CDSA, as well as its technical challenges and enabling technologies. Finally, an overview of standardisation proposals related to this research vision is provided

    Improving the energy efficiency and transmission reliability of battery-powered sensor nodes at the edges of a mains-powered wireless network.

    A masters thesis focussing on achieving improvements in transmission reliability and energy efficiency for a battery-powered wireless sensor node on the edge of an industrial heterogeneous wireless network that consists predominantly of mains-powered nodes. A router-switching technique is proposed to allow the sensor node to make gains in transmission reliability and energy efficiency by taking advantage of the scenario where multiple wireless routers are in range and switching between them, instead of only being able to transmit to one router. The research involves simulation of a number of network scenarios where the router-switching technique is enabled and disabled, to measure the advantage gained for the sensor in terms of its functional lifetime. The simulation is based on an abstract model that focusses on the edge of the mains-powered area of the network, where the battery-powered sensor is located. The simulation results show that for many cases, router-switching provides a higher level of transmission reliability and lower levels of energy consumption than the scenario where router-switching is disabled, as well as improvements in data loss rates

    Advanced Technologies Enabling Unlicensed Spectrum Utilization in Cellular Networks

    As the rapid progress and pleasant experience of Internet-based services, there is an increasing demand for high data rate in wireless communications systems. Unlicensed spectrum utilization in Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks is a promising technique to meet the massive traffic demand. There are two effective methods to use unlicensed bands for delivering LTE traffic. One is offloading LTE traffic toWi-Fi. An alternative method is LTE-unlicensed (LTE-U), which aims to directly use LTE protocols and infrastructures over the unlicensed spectrum. It has also been pointed out that addressing the above two methods simultaneously could further improve the system performance. However, how to avoid severe performance degradation of the Wi-Fi network is a challenging issue of utilizing unlicensed spectrum in LTE networks. Specifically, first, the inter-system spectrum sharing, or, more specifically, the coexistence of LTE andWi-Fi in the same unlicensed spectrum is the major challenge of implementing LTE-U. Second, to use the LTE and Wi-Fi integration approach, mobile operators have to manage two disparate networks in licensed and unlicensed spectrum. Third, optimization for joint data offloading to Wi-Fi and LTE-U in multi- cell scenarios poses more challenges because inter-cell interference must be addressed. This thesis focuses on solving problems related to these challenges. First, the effect of bursty traffic in an LTE and Wi-Fi aggregation (LWA)-enabled network has been investigated. To enhance resource efficiency, the Wi-Fi access point (AP) is designed to operate in both the native mode and the LWA mode simultaneously. Specifically, the LWA-modeWi-Fi AP cooperates with the LTE base station (BS) to transmit bearers to the LWA user, which aggregates packets from both LTE and Wi-Fi. The native-mode Wi-Fi AP transmits Wi-Fi packets to those native Wi-Fi users that are not with LWA capability. This thesis proposes a priority-based Wi-Fi transmission scheme with congestion control and studied the throughput of the native Wi-Fi network, as well as the LWA user delay when the native Wi-Fi user is under heavy traffic conditions. The results provide fundamental insights in the throughput and delay behavior of the considered network. Second, the above work has been extended to larger topologies. A stochastic geometry model has been used to model and analyze the performance of an MPTCP Proxy-based LWA network with intra-tier and cross-tier dependence. Under the considered network model and the activation conditions of LWA-mode Wi-Fi, this thesis has obtained three approximations for the density of active LWA-mode Wi-Fi APs through different approaches. Tractable analysis is provided for the downlink (DL) performance evaluation of large-scale LWA networks. The impact of different parameters on the network performance have been analyzed, validating the significant gain of using LWA in terms of boosted data rate and improved spectrum reuse. Third, this thesis also takes a significant step of analyzing joint multi-cell LTE-U and Wi-Fi network, while taking into account different LTE-U and Wi-Fi inter-working schemes. In particular, two technologies enabling data offloading from LTE to Wi-Fi are considered, including LWA and Wi-Fi offloading in the context of the power gain-based user offloading scheme. The LTE cells in this work are subject to load-coupling due to inter-cell interference. New system frameworks for maximizing the demand scaling factor for all users in both Wi-Fi and multi-cell LTE networks have been proposed. The potential of networks is explored in achieving optimal capacity with arbitrary topologies, accounting for both resource limits and inter-cell interference. Theoretical analyses have been proposed for the proposed optimization problems, resulting in algorithms that achieve global optimality. Numerical results show the algorithms’ effectiveness and benefits of joint use of data offloading and the direct use of LTE over the unlicensed band. All the derived results in this thesis have been validated by Monte Carlo simulations in Matlab, and the conclusions observed from the results can provide guidelines for the future unlicensed spectrum utilization in LTE networks

    ON ANALYTICAL MODELING OF MOBILITY SIGNALLING IN ULTRA DENSE HETNETS

    Multi-band and multi-tier network densification is being considered as the most promising solution to overcome the capacity crunch problem in emerging cellular networks. To this end, small cells (SCs) are being deployed within macro cells (MC) to off-load some of the users associated with the MCs. This deployment scenario gives birth to several new problems. Amongst others, handovers (HOs), signalling overhead and mobility management are becoming increasingly critical challenges. Frequent HOs in ultra-dense SC deployments can lead to a degraded mobility performance and increase signalling overhead significantly. Recently, a new cellular architecture with control/data plane separation has been proposed to overcome these challenges. However, the state of the art analysis of the feasibility of the CDSA remains mostly qualitative. There is dire need for mathematical models to analyze the performance of various aspects of CDSA and quantify its gains, if any, compared to conventional architecture. In this dissertation, we derive several analytical models to compare HO performance in the control/data separation architecture (CDSA) and conventionally deployed networks under various scenarios and configurations. Our developed mathematical framework advances the state of the art by considering HO success, HO failure and no HO scenarios. The proposed models can be used to quantify HO signalling as a function of key cellular system design parameter such as cell density, session duration, velocity, HO duration(s) and intercell overlap coverage factor. Using the developed analytical models, we perform a comparative analysis of HO signalling generated during various HO scenarios in CDSA and conventionally deployed networks. Building on the insights drawn from this analysis, we introduce new parameters for improving the HO execution process in emerging cellular networks viz-a-viz 5G and beyond. These new parameters, when tuned optimally, can significantly reduce the HO signalling load. Closed form expressions are also derived for continuous and continual (intermittent) mobility scenarios, while considering both HO success and HO failure likelihoods. In addition, we propose an analytical model which enables more radio resource efficient network planning by quantifying HO signalling and success probabilities as function of intercell overlap coverage factor. Analysis indicates that cell density, actual HO time duration and average velocity can be used as the key metrics to optimally plan intercell overlap coverage factor in order to minimize mobility signalling load. Numerical results and analysis based on the developed overall analytical framework indicate that, compared to conventional networks, CDSA offers promising gains in terms HO performance and reduced HO signaling overhead

    Time-Driven Access and Forwarding for Industrial Wireless Multihop Networks

    The deployment of wireless technologies in industrial networks is very promising mainly due to their inherent flexibility. However, current wireless solutions lack the capability to provide the deterministic, low delay service required by many industrial applications. Moreover, the high level of interference generated by industrial equipment limits the coverage that ensures acceptable performance. Multi-hop solutions, when combining frame forwarding with higher node density, have the potential to provide the needed coverage while keeping radio communication range short. However, in multi-hop solutions the medium access time at each of the nodes traversed additively contributes to the end-to-end delay and the forwarding delay (i.e., the time required for packets to be processed, switched, and queued) at each node is to be added as well. This paper describes Time-driven Access and Forwarding (TAF), a solution for guaranteeing deterministic delay, at both the access and forwarding level, in wireless multi-hop networks, analyzes its properties, and assesses its performance in industrial scenario

    Real-time wireless networks for industrial control systems

    The next generation of industrial systems (Industry 4.0) will dramatically transform manyproductive sectors, integrating emerging concepts such as Internet of Things, artificialintelligence, big data, cloud robotics and virtual reality, to name a few. Most of thesetechnologies heavily rely on the availability of communication networks able to offernearly–istantaneous, secure and reliable data transfer. In the industrial sector, these tasks are nowadays mainly accomplished by wired networks, that combine the speed ofoptical fiber media with collision–free switching technology. However, driven by the pervasive deployment of mobile devices for personal com-munications in the last years, more and more industrial applications require wireless connectivity, which can bring enormous advantages in terms of cost reduction and flex-ibility. Designing timely, reliable and deterministic industrial wireless networks is a complicated task, due to the nature of the wireless channel, intrinsically error–prone andshared among all the devices transmitting on the same frequency band. In this thesis, several solutions to enhance the performance of wireless networks employed in industrial control applications are proposed. The presented approaches differ in terms of achieved performance and target applications, but they are all characterized by an improvement over existing industrial wireless solutions in terms of timeliness, reliability and determinism. When possible, an experimental validation of the designed solutions is provided. The obtained results prove that significant performance improvements are already possible, often using commercially available devices and preserving compliance to existing standards. Future research efforts, combined with the availability of new chipsets and standards, could lead to a world where wireless links effectively replace most of the existing cables in industrial environments, as it is already the case in the consumer market
