A parameterized version of the tree processor was designed and tested (by simulation). The leaf processor design is 90 percent complete. We expect to complete and test a combination of tree and leaf cell designs in the next period. Work is proceeding on algorithms for the computer aided manufacturing (CAM), and once the design is complete we will begin simulating algorithms for large problems. The following topics are covered: (1) the practical implementation of content addressable memory; (2) design of a LEAF cell for the Rutgers CAM architecture; (3) a circuit design tool user's manual; and (4) design and analysis of efficient hierarchical interconnection networks

Asynchronous design of a multi-dimensional logarithmic number system processor for digital hearing instruments.

This thesis presents an asynchronous Multi-Dimensional Logarithmic Number System (MDLNS) processor that exhibits very low power dissipation. The target application is for a hearing instrument DSP. The MDLNS is a newly developed number system that has the advantage of reducing hardware complexity compared to the classical Logarithmic Number System (LNS). A synchronous implementation of a 2-digit 2DLNS filterbank, using the MDLNS to construct a FIR filterbank, has successfully proved that this novel number representation can benefit this digital hearing instrument application in the requirement of small size and low power. In this thesis we demonstrate that the combination of using the MDLNS, along with an asynchronous design methodology, produces impressive power savings compared to the previous synchronous design. A 4-phase bundled-data full-handshaking protocol is applied to the asynchronous control design. We adopt the Differential Cascade Voltage Switch Logic (DCVSL) circuit family for the design of the computation cells in this asynchronous MDLNS processor. Besides the asynchronous design methodology, we also use finite ring calculations to reduce adder bit-width to provide improvements compared to the previous MDLNS filterbank architecture. Spectre power simulation results from simulations of this asynchronous MDLNS processor demonstrate that over 70 percent power savings have been achieved compared to the synchronous design. This full-custom asynchronous MDLNS processor has been submitted for fabrication in the TSMC 0.18mum CMOS technology. A further contribution in this thesis is the development of a novel synchronizing method of design for testability (DfT), which is offered as a possible solution for asynchronous DfT methods.Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Veterans Using Mindfulness Practice To Cope With Trauma & Operational Stress Injuries

    Get PDF
Psychological distress due to military operations is impacting returning veterans mentally and physically. The purpose of exploring literature relating to veterans is to determine if mindfulness-based interventions (MBI) are beneficial in managing the symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Data generated by the research question “What are the therapeutic benefits of mindfulness-based interventions, if any, in managing the symptoms of PTSD among veterans?” were explored to determine the effectiveness of using mindfulness-based coping skills to manage symptoms such as hyperarousal, intrusive recollections, and avoidance. The studies that were analyzed reported on veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces and have used mindfulness-based interventions to manage symptoms relating to PTSD. Data collected during the content analysis pertained to the general demographic of subjects in the studies, including the number of veterans and completers, selected MBI, and results of MBI. A total of 24 scholarly articles were analyzed for the study. This content analysis demonstrated that mindfulness-based interventions are an effective evidence-based treatment for veterans to cope with trauma and operational stress injuries

    Sensing synesthesia

Sensing Synesthesia is an exhibition of experiments, carried out through the medium of graphic design as an attempt to generate a synesthesiac experience by visualizing sound. Since many elements within the realms of sound and sight are relative, creating a genuine synesthesiac experience for a viewing audience proved challenging. To address this problem, I created visual elements that corresponded with personal convictions, emotions and proclamations and presented them in a way congruent to the sounds being heard. Through these experiments, I discovered the personal growth of myself: the sharpened skills as a graphic designer, initiated interest in hand-rendered type as well as graffiti art as a style. Furthermore, I aimed that the interrelated, impactful relationship between sight and sound we all encounter on a daily basis generates a deeper experience despite our level of awareness
