A statistical comparison of metaheuristics for unrelated parallel machine scheduling problems with setup times
Manufacturing scheduling aims to optimize one or more performance measures by allocating a set of resources to a set of jobs or tasks over a given period of time. It is an area that considers a very important decision-making process for manufacturing and production systems. In this paper, the unrelated parallel machine scheduling problem with machine-dependent and job-sequence-dependent setup times is addressed. This problem involves the scheduling of tasks on unrelated machines with setup times in order to minimize the makespan. The genetic algorithm is used to solve small and large instances of this problem when processing and setup times are balanced (Balanced problems), when processing times are dominant (Dominant P problems), and when setup times are dominant (Dominant S problems). For small instances, most of the values achieved the optimal makespan value, and, when compared to the metaheuristic ant colony optimization (ACOII) algorithm referred to in the literature, it was found that there were no significant differences between the two methods. However, in terms of large instances, there were significant differences between the optimal makespan obtained by the two methods, revealing overall better performance by the genetic algorithm for Dominant S and Dominant P problems.FCT—Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia through the R&D Units Project Scope UIDB/00319/2020 and EXPL/EME-SIS/1224/2021 and PhD grant UI/BD/150936/2021
Planning and Scheduling Optimization
Although planning and scheduling optimization have been explored in the literature for many years now, it still remains a hot topic in the current scientific research. The changing market trends, globalization, technical and technological progress, and sustainability considerations make it necessary to deal with new optimization challenges in modern manufacturing, engineering, and healthcare systems. This book provides an overview of the recent advances in different areas connected with operations research models and other applications of intelligent computing techniques used for planning and scheduling optimization. The wide range of theoretical and practical research findings reported in this book confirms that the planning and scheduling problem is a complex issue that is present in different industrial sectors and organizations and opens promising and dynamic perspectives of research and development
Serial-batch scheduling – the special case of laser-cutting machines
The dissertation deals with a problem in the field of short-term production planning, namely the scheduling of laser-cutting machines. The object of decision is the grouping of production orders (batching) and the sequencing of these order groups on one or more machines (scheduling). This problem is also known in the literature as "batch scheduling problem" and belongs to the class of combinatorial optimization problems due to the interdependencies between the batching and the scheduling decisions. The concepts and methods used are mainly from production planning, operations research and machine learning

A Digital Twin Framework for Production Planning Optimization: Applications for Make-To-Order Manufacturers
In this dissertation, we develop a Digital Twin framework for manufacturing systems and apply it to various production planning and scheduling problems faced by Make-To-Order (MTO) firms. While this framework can be used to digitally represent a particular manufacturing environment with high fidelity, our focus is in using it to generate realistic settings to test production planning and scheduling algorithms in practice. These algorithms have traditionally been tested by either translating a practical situation into the necessary modeling constructs, without discussion of the assumptions and inaccuracies underlying this translation, or by generating random instances of the modeling constructs, without assessing the limitations in accurately representing production environments. The consequence has been a serious gap between theory advancement and industry practice. The major goal of this dissertation is to develop a framework that allows for practical testing, evaluation, and implementation of new approaches for seamless industry adoption. We develop this framework as a modular software package and emphasize the practicality and configurability of the framework, such that minimal modelling effort is required to apply the framework to a multitude of optimization problems and manufacturing systems. Throughout this dissertation, we emphasize the importance of the underlying scheduling problems which provide the basis for additional operational decision making. We focus on the computational evaluation and comparisons of various modeling choices within the developed frameworks, with the objective of identifying models which are both effective and computationally efficient. In Part 1 of this dissertation, we consider a class of Production Planning and Execution problems faced by job shop manufacturing systems. In Part 2 of this dissertation, we consider a class of scheduling problems faced by manufacturers whose production system is dominated by a single operation
Risk-Based Optimal Scheduling for the Predictive Maintenance of Railway Infrastructure
In this thesis a risk-based decision support system to schedule the predictive maintenance activities, is proposed. The model deals with the maintenance planning of a railway infrastructure in which the due-dates are defined via failure risk analysis. The novelty of the approach consists of the risk concept introduction in railway maintenance scheduling, according to ISO 55000 guidelines, thus implying that the maintenance priorities are based on asset criticality, determined taking into account the relevant failure probability, related to asset degradation conditions, and the consequent damages
Energy Efficient Policies, Scheduling, and Design for Sustainable Manufacturing Systems
Climate mitigation, more stringent regulations, rising energy costs, and sustainable manufacturing are pushing researchers to focus on energy efficiency, energy flexibility, and implementation of renewable energy sources in manufacturing systems. This thesis aims to analyze the main works proposed regarding these hot topics, and to fill the gaps in the literature. First, a detailed literature review is proposed. Works regarding energy efficiency in different manufacturing levels, in the assembly line, energy saving policies, and the implementation of renewable energy sources are analyzed. Then, trying to fill the gaps in the literature, different topics are analyzed more in depth. In the single machine context, a mathematical model aiming to align the manufacturing power required to a renewable energy supply in order to obtain the maximum profit is developed. The model is applied to a single work center powered by the electric grid and by a photovoltaic system; afterwards, energy storage is also added to the power system. Analyzing the job shop context, switch off policies implementing workload approach and scheduling considering variable speed of the machines and power constraints are proposed. The direct and indirect workloads of the machines are considered to support the switch on/off decisions. A simulation model is developed to test the proposed policies compared to others presented in the literature. Regarding the job shop scheduling, a fixed and variable power constraints are considered, assuming the minimization of the makespan as the objective function. Studying the factory level, a mathematical model to design a flow line considering the possibility of using switch-off policies is developed. The design model for production lines includes a targeted imbalance among the workstations to allow for defined idle time. Finally, the main findings, results, and the future directions and challenges are presented

May 2017Numerous applications in a wide variety of elds has resulted in a rich history of research
into optimisation for scheduling. Although it is a fundamental form of the problem, the
single machine scheduling problem with two or more objectives is known to be NP-hard.
For this reason we consider the single machine problem a good test bed for solution
algorithms. While there is a plethora of research into various aspects of scheduling
problems, little has been done in evaluating the performance of the Simulated Annealing
algorithm for the fundamental problem, or using it in combination with other techniques.
Speci cally, this has not been done for minimising total weighted earliness and tardiness,
which is the optimisation objective of this work.
If we consider a mere ten jobs for scheduling, this results in over 3.6 million possible
solution schedules. It is thus of de nite practical necessity to reduce the search space in
order to nd an optimal or acceptable suboptimal solution in a shorter time, especially
when scaling up the problem size. This is of particular importance in the application
area of packet scheduling in wireless communications networks where the tolerance for
computational delays is very low. The main contribution of this work is to investigate
the hypothesis that inserting a step of pre-sampling by Markov Chain Monte Carlo
methods before running the Simulated Annealing algorithm on the pruned search space
can result in overall reduced running times.
The search space is divided into a number of sections and Metropolis-Hastings Markov
Chain Monte Carlo is performed over the sections in order to reduce the search space for
Simulated Annealing by a factor of 20 to 100. Trade-o s are found between the run time
and number of sections of the pre-sampling algorithm, and the run time of Simulated
Annealing for minimising the percentage deviation of the nal result from the optimal
solution cost. Algorithm performance is determined both by computational complexity
and the quality of the solution (i.e. the percentage deviation from the optimal). We
nd that the running time can be reduced by a factor of 4.5 to ensure a 2% deviation
from the optimal, as compared to the basic Simulated Annealing algorithm on the full
search space. More importantly, we are able to reduce the complexity of nding the
optimal from O(n:n!) for a complete search to O(nNS) for Simulated Annealing to
O(n(NMr +NS)+m) for the input variables n jobs, NS SA iterations, NM Metropolis-
Hastings iterations, r inner samples and m sections.MT 201
Models and Algorithms for the Optimisation of Replenishment, Production and Distribution Plans in Industrial Enterprises
[EN] Optimisation in manufacturing companies is especially important, due to the large investments they make, as sometimes these investments do not obtain the expected return because the profit margins of products are very tight. Therefore, companies seek to maximise the use of productive and financial resources by minimising lost time and, at the same time, improving process flows while meeting market needs.
The planning process is a critical activity for companies. This task involves great challenges due to market changes, alterations in production processes within the company and in the supply chain, and changes in legislation, among others.
Planning of replenishment, production and distribution plays a critical role in the performance of manufacturing companies because ineffective planning of suppliers, production processes and distribution systems contributes to higher product costs, longer lead times and less profits. Effective planning is a complex process that encompasses a wide range of activities to ensure that equipment, materials and human resources are available in the right time and the right place.
Motivated by the complexity of planning in manufacturing companies, this thesis studies and develops quantitative tools to help planners in the replenishment, production and delivery planning processes. From this perspective, realistic models and efficient methods are proposed to support decision making in industrial companies, mainly in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The contributions of this thesis represent a scientific breakthrough based on a comprehensive literature review about replenishment, production and distribution planning that helps to understand the main models and algorithms used to solve these plans, and highlights trends and future research directions. It also provides a holistic framework to characterise models and algorithms by focusing on production planning, scheduling and sequencing. This thesis also proposes a decision support tool for selecting an algorithm or solution method to solve concrete replenishment, production and distribution planning problems according to their complexity, which allows planners to not duplicate efforts modelling or programming solution techniques. Finally, new state-of-the-art mathematical models and solution approaches are developed, such as matheuristic algorithms, which combine mathematical programming and metaheuristic techniques.
The new models and algorithms comprise improvements in computational performance terms, and include realistic features of real-world problems faced by manufacturing companies. The mathematical models have been validated with a case of an important company in the automotive sector in Spain, which allowed to evaluate the practical relevance of these novel models using large instances, similarly to those existing in the company under study. In addition, the matheuristic algorithms have been tested using free and open-source tools. This also helps to contribute to the practice of operations research, and provides insight into how to deploy these solution methods and the computational time and gap performance that can be obtained by using free or open-source software. This work would not have been possible without the following funding sources: Conselleria de Educación, Investigación, Cultura y Deporte, Generalitat Valenciana for hiring predoctoral research staff with Grant (ACIF/2018/170) and the European Social Fund with the Grant Operational Programme of FSE 2014-2020. A Bicriteria Simulated Annealing Algorithm for Scheduling Jobs on Parallel Machines with Sequence Dependent Setup Times
The study considers the scheduling problem of identical parallel machines subject to minimization of the maximum completion time and the maximum tardiness expressed in a linear convex objective function. The maximum completion time or makespan is the date when the last job to be completed leaves the system. The maximum tardiness is indicated by the job that is completed with the longest delay relative its due date. Minimizing both criteria can help assuring a high utilization of the production system as well as a high level of service towards the client. Due to the complexity of the problem, a Simulated Annealing (SA) heuristic has been implemented to be able to obtain an efficient solution in a reasonable running time. A set of n jobs is assigned, to one of the m identical parallel machines. Each job is processed in only one operation before its completion after which it leaves the system. Constraints, such as due dates for each job and setup times for the machines, are considered. The resolution procedure consists of two phases and begins with an initial solution generator. Then a SA heuristic is applied for further improvement of the solution. 4 generators are used to create an initial solution and 3 to generate neighbour solutions. To test and verify the performance of the proposed resolution procedure, a computational experimentation has been realized on a set of test problems generated ad-hoc
