    Semi-Passive Control Strategy using Piezoceramic Patches in Non Linear Commutation Architecture for Structural-Acoustic Smart Systems

    The demands for novel smart damping materials can be summarized in: external power source not required for operation; device not needing to be tuned to a specific frequency; device operation not affected by changes in modal frequency; device suppressing vibration over a number of modes, weight and size minimized; self-contained unit device. This thesis focuses on these points and it shows that the dilemma between active and passive vibration control may be solved with a new approach, implementing a semipassive technique without penalties in terms of robustness and performance. Connecting a shunt circuit to a piezoelectric transducer leads to a simple and low cost vibration controller that is able to efficiently suppress unwanted structural vibrations: this is a way to fulfil the abovementioned demands. The objective of this work is to develop and validate by an experimental campaign a computational tool integrated with finite element Nastran software. An original 4-channel switched shunt control system has been realized using a tachometer device. The control system has been tested first of all on a simple cantilevered beam attaining a max vibrations reduction of 16.2 dB for the first bending mode. Further reference test article consisted of a 10 ply fibreglass laminate plate. A multimodal control has applied within a band range of 700Hz including the first seven modes. A maximum reduction of 16 dB has been found. Further numerical and experimental tests have been planned to extend the ability of the SSC to produce structural-borne sound reduction in acoustic rigid cavities for fluid-structure interaction problems.     Electronic operation and control of high-intensity gas-discharge lamps

    The ever increasing amount of global energy consumption based on the application of fossil fuels is threatening the earth’s natural resources and environment. Worldwide, grid-based electric lighting consumes 19 % of total global electricity production. For this reason the transition towards energy efficient lighting plays an important environmental role. One of the key technologies in this transition is High-Intensity Discharge (HID) lighting. The technical revolution in gas-discharge lamps has resulted in the highlyefficient lamps that are available nowadays. As with most energy efficient light solutions, all HID lighting systems require a ballast to operate. Traditionally, magnetic ballast designs were the only choice available for HID lighting systems. Today, electronic lampdrivers can offer additional power saving, flicker free operation, and miniaturisation. Electronic lamp operation enables additional degrees of freedom in lamp-current control over the conventional electro-magnetic (EM) ballasts. The lamp-driver system performance depends on both the dynamics of the lamp and the driver. This thesis focuses on the optimisation of electronically operated HID systems, in terms of highly-efficient lamp-driver topologies and, more specifically, lamp-driver interaction control. First, highly-efficient power topologies to operate compact HID lamps on low-frequency-square-wave (LFSW) current are explored. The proposed two-stage electronic lamp-driver consists of a Power Factor Corrector (PFC) stage that meets the power utility standards. This converter is coupled to a stacked buck converter that controls the lamp-current. Both stages are operated in Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS) mode in order to reduce the switching losses. The resulting two-stage lamp-drivers feature flexible controllability, high efficiency, and high power density, and are suitable for power sandwich packaging. Secondly, lamp-driver interaction (LDI) has been studied in the simulation domain and control algorithms have been explored that improve the stability, and enable system optimisation. Two HID lamp models were developed. The first model describes the HID lamp’s small-signal electrical behaviour and its purpose is to aid to study the interaction stability. The second HID lamp model has been developed based on physics equations for the arc column and the electrode behaviour, and is intended for lampdriver simulations and control applications. Verification measurements have shown that the lamp terminal characteristics are present over a wide power and frequency range. Three LDI control algorithms were explored, using the proposed lampmodels. The first control principle optimises the LDI for a broad range of HID lamps operated at normal or reduced power. This approach consists of two control loops integrated into a fuzzy-logic controller that stabilises the lamp-current and optimises the commutation process. The second control problem concerns the application of ultra high performance (UHP) HID lamps in projection applications that typically set stringent requirements on the quality of the light generated by these lamps, and therefore the lampcurrent. These systems are subject to periodic disturbances synchronous with the LFSW commutation period. Iterative learning control (ILC) has been examined. It was experimentally verified that this algorithm compensates for repetitive disturbances. Third, Electronic HID operation also opens the door for continuous HID lamp dimming that can provide additional savings. To enable stable dimming, an observer-based HID lamp controller has been developed. This controller sets a stable minimum dim-level and monitors the gas-discharge throughout lamp life. The HID lamp observer derives physical lamp state signals from the HID arc discharge physics and the related photometric properties. Finally, practical measurements proved the proposed HID lamp observer-based control principle works satisfactorily

    Double Resonant High-Frequency Converters for Wireless Power Transfer

    This thesis describes novel techniques and developments in the design and implementation of a low power radio frequency (40kHz to 1MHz) wireless power transfer (WPT) system, with an application in the wireless charging of autonomous drones without physical connection to its on-board Battery Management System (BMS). The WPT system is developed around a matrix converter exploiting the benefits such as a small footprint (DC-link free), high efficiency and high power density. The overall WPT system topology discussed in this thesis is based on the current state-of-the-art found in literature, but enhancements are made through novel methods to further improve the converter’s stability, reduce control complexity and improve the wireless power efficiency. In this work, each part of the system is analysed and novel techniques are proposed to achieve improvements. The WPT system design methodology presented in this thesis commences with the use of a conventional full-bridge converter. For cost-efficiency and to improve the converters stability, a novel gate drive circuit is presented which provides self-generated negative bias such that a bipolar MOSFET drive can be driven without an additional voltage source or magnetic component. The switching control sequences for both a full-bridge and single phase to single phase matrix converter are analysed which show that the switching of a matrix converter can be considered to be the same as a full-bridge converter under certain conditions. A middleware is then presented that reduces the complexity of the control required for a matrix converter and enables control by a conventional full-bridge controller (i.e. linear controller or microcontroller). A novel technique that can maximise and maintain in real-time the WPT efficiency is presented using a maximum efficiency point tracking approach. A detailed study of potential issues that may affect the implementation of this novel approach are presented and new solutions are proposed. A novel wireless pseudo-synchronous sampling method is presented and implemented on a prototype system to realise the maximum efficiency point tracking approach. Finally, a new hybrid wireless phase-locked loop is presented and implemented to minimise the bandwidth requirements of the maximum efficiency point tracking approach. The performance and methods for implementation of the novel concepts introduced in this thesis are demonstrated through a number of prototypes that were built. These include a matrix converter and two full WPT systems with operating frequencies ranging from sub-megahertz to megahertz level. Moreover, the final prototype is applied to the charging of a quadcopter battery pack to successfully charge the pack wirelessly whilst actively balancing the cells. Hence, fast battery charging and cell balancing, which conventionally requires battery removal, can be achieved without re-balance the weight of the UAV

    Energy harvesting; that is, harvesting small amounts of energy from environmental sources such as solar, air flow or vibrations using small-scale (≈1cm 3 ) devices, offers the prospect of powering portable electronic devices such as GPS receivers and mobile phones, and sensing devices used in remote applications: wireless sensor nodes, without the use of batteries. Numerous studies have shown that power densities of energy harvesting devices can be hundreds of µW; however the literature also reveals that power requirements of many electronic devices are in the mW range. Therefore, a key challenge for the successful deployment of energy harvesting technology remains, in many cases, the provision of adequate power.     A gravitational torque energy harvesting system for rotational motion

    This thesis describes a novel, single point-of-attachment, gravitational torque energy harvesting system powered from rotational motion. The primary aim of such a system is to scavenge energy from a continuously rotating host in order to power a wireless sensor node. In this thesis, a wireless tachometer was prototyped. Most published work on motion-driven energy harvesters has used ambient vibrations in the environment as the energy source. However, none of the reported devices have been designed to harvest energy directly from continuous ambient rotation. There are important applications such as tire pressure sensing and condition monitoring of machinery where the host structure experiences continuous rotation. In this work, it is shown that in many applications, a rotational energy harvester can offer significant improvements in power density over its vibration-driven counterparts. A prototype single point-of-attachment rotational energy harvester was conceived using a simple direct-current generator. The rotational source was coupled to the stator and an offset mass was anchored on the rotor to create a counteractive gravitational torque. This produces a relative angular speed between rotor and stator which causes power to be generated. Power transfer from the generator to a load was maximised by enforcing an input impedance match between the generator’s armature resistance and the input impedance of a boost converter which in this case, functioned as a resistance emulator. Energy storage and output voltage regulation were implemented using supercapacitors and a wide-input buck regulator respectively. When excess power was generated, it was stored in the supercapacitors and during low source rotation speeds, i.e. insufficient harvested power, the supercapacitors will discharge to maintain operation of the interface electronics. A detailed optimisation procedure of a boost converter was conducted in Matlab in order to minimise the power loss, resulting in a maximum voltage gain of 11.1 and measured circuit efficiency of 96 %. A state-space control model of the harvester electronics was developed in the analogue domain using classical control techniques and this showed the system to be closed-loop stable. A final prototype of the rotational energy harvesting system was built and this comprised an input impedance controller, wireless transmitter and tachometer. The entire system has a measured end-to-end efficiency which peaked at 58 % from a source rotation of 1400 RPM with the generator producing 1.45 W under matched load conditions

    Synchronverter-based control for wind power

    More and more attention has been paid to the energy crisis due to the increasing energy demand from industrial and commercial applications. The utilisation of wind power, which is considered as one of the most promising renewable energy sources, has grown rapidly in the last three decades. In recent years, many power converter techniques have been developed to integrate wind power with the electrical grid. The use of power electronic converters allows for variable speed operation of wind turbines, and enhanced power extraction. This work, which is supported by EPSRC and Nheolis under the DHPA scheme, focuses on the design and analysis of control systems for wind power. In this work, two of the most popular AC-DC-AC topologies with permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSG) have been developed. One consists of an uncontrollable rectifier, a boost converter and an inverter and a current control scheme is proposed to achieve the maximum power point tracking (MPPT). In the control strategy, the output current of the uncontrollable rectifier is controlled by a boost converter according to the current reference, which is determined by a climbing algorithm, to achieve MPPT. The synchronverter technology has been applied to control the inverter for the grid-connection. An experimental setup based on DSP has been designed to implement all the above mentioned experiments. In addition, a synchronverter-based parallel control strategy, which consists of a frequency droop loop and a voltage droop loop to achieve accurate sharing of real power and reactive power respectively, has been further studied. Moreover, a control strategy based on the synchronverter has been presented to force the inverter to have capacitive output impedance, so that the quality of the output voltage is improved. Abstract The other topology consists of a full-scale back-to-back converter, of which the rectifier is controllable. Two control strategies have been proposed to operate a three-phase rectifier to mimic a synchronous motor, following the idea of synchronverters to operate inverters to mimic synchronous generators. In the proposed schemes, the real power extracted from the source and the output voltage are the control variables, respectively, hence they can be employed in different applications. Furthermore, improved control strategies are proposed to self-synchronise with the grid. This does not only improve the performance of the system but also considerably reduces the complexity of the overall controller. All experiments have been implemented on a test rig based on dSPACE to demonstrate the excellent performance of the proposed control strategies with unity power factor, sinusoidal currents and good dynamics. Finally, an original control strategy based on the synchronverter technology has been proposed for back-to-back converters in wind power applications to make the whole system behave as a generator-motor-generator system
