SurveyMan: Programming and Automatically Debugging Surveys
Surveys can be viewed as programs, complete with logic, control flow, and
bugs. Word choice or the order in which questions are asked can unintentionally
bias responses. Vague, confusing, or intrusive questions can cause respondents
to abandon a survey. Surveys can also have runtime errors: inattentive
respondents can taint results. This effect is especially problematic when
deploying surveys in uncontrolled settings, such as on the web or via
crowdsourcing platforms. Because the results of surveys drive business
decisions and inform scientific conclusions, it is crucial to make sure they
are correct.
We present SurveyMan, a system for designing, deploying, and automatically
debugging surveys. Survey authors write their surveys in a lightweight
domain-specific language aimed at end users. SurveyMan statically analyzes the
survey to provide feedback to survey authors before deployment. It then
compiles the survey into JavaScript and deploys it either to the web or a
crowdsourcing platform. SurveyMan's dynamic analyses automatically find survey
bugs, and control for the quality of responses. We evaluate SurveyMan's
algorithms analytically and empirically, demonstrating its effectiveness with
case studies of social science surveys conducted via Amazon's Mechanical Turk.Comment: Submitted version; accepted to OOPSLA 201
Dynamics of banking technology adoption: an application to internet banking
This paper is concerned with examining behaviour of firms (banks) and consumers (banks’ customers) in the event of a new technology (internet banking) introduction. The determinants of consumer adoption of internet banking are characterised using survey data from Korea in both static and dynamic framework. I find evidence that adoption of internet banking is influenced by sex, age, marital status, degree of exposure to internet banking, and the characteristics of the banks. A duration analysis shows no evidence of first mover advantage (order effects) in internet banking whilst the largest bank (rank effects) in commercial banking remains dominant in internet banking. The results imply that the internet banking adoption is dominated by social norm effects
Differentially Testing Soundness and Precision of Program Analyzers
In the last decades, numerous program analyzers have been developed both by
academia and industry. Despite their abundance however, there is currently no
systematic way of comparing the effectiveness of different analyzers on
arbitrary code. In this paper, we present the first automated technique for
differentially testing soundness and precision of program analyzers. We used
our technique to compare six mature, state-of-the art analyzers on tens of
thousands of automatically generated benchmarks. Our technique detected
soundness and precision issues in most analyzers, and we evaluated the
implications of these issues to both designers and users of program analyzers

A Static Verification Framework for Secure Peer-to-Peer Applications
In this paper we present a static verification framework to support the design and verification of secure peer-to-peer applications. The framework supports the specification, modeling, and analysis of security aspects together with the general characteristics of the system, during early stages of the development life-cycle. The approach avoids security issues to be taken into consideration as a separate layer that is added to the system as an afterthought by the use of security protocols. The main functionality supported by the framework are concerned with the modeling of the system together with its security aspects by using an extension of UML, modeling of abuse cases to represent scenarios of attackers and assist with the identification of properties to be verified, specification of properties to be verified in a graphical template language, verification of the models against the properties, and visualization of the results of the verification process
On Modeling and Analyzing Cost Factors in Information Systems Engineering
Introducing enterprise information systems (EIS) is usually associated with high costs. It is therefore crucial to understand those factors that determine or influence these costs. Though software cost estimation has received considerable attention during the last decades, it is difficult to apply existing approaches to EIS. This difficulty particularly stems from the inability of these methods to deal with the dynamic interactions of the many technological, organizational and projectdriven cost factors which specifically arise in the context of EIS. Picking up this problem, we introduce the EcoPOST framework to investigate the complex cost structures of EIS engineering projects through qualitative cost evaluation models. This paper extends previously described concepts and introduces design rules and guidelines for cost evaluation models in order to enhance the development of meaningful and useful EcoPOST cost evaluation models. A case study illustrates the benefits of our approach. Most important, our EcoPOST framework is an important tool supporting EIS engineers in gaining a better understanding of the critical factors determining the costs of EIS engineering projects
