    Last Time Buy and Control Policies With Phase-Out Returns: A Case Study in Plant Control Systems

    This research involves the combination of spare parts management and reverse logistics. At the end of the product life cycle, products in the field (so called installed base) can usually be serviced by either new parts, obtained from a Last Time Buy, or by repaired failed parts. This paper, however, introduces a third source: the phase-out returns obtained from customers that replace systems. These returned parts may serve other customers that do not replace the systems yet. Phase-out return flows represent higher volumes and higher repair yields than failed parts and are cheaper to get than new ones. This new phenomenon has been ignored in the literature thus far, but due to increased product replacements rates its relevance will grow. We present a generic model, applied in a case study with real-life data from ConRepair, a third-party service provider in plant control systems (mainframes). Volumes of demand for spares, defects returns and phase-out returns are interrelated, because the same installed base is involved. In contrast with the existing literature, this paper explicitly models the operational control of both failed- and phase-out returns, which proves far from trivial given the nonstationary nature of the problem. We have to consider subintervals within the total planning interval to optimize both Last Time Buy and control policies well. Given the novelty of the problem, we limit ourselves to a single customer, single-item approach. Our heuristic solution methods prove efficient and close to optimal when validated. The resulting control policies in the case-study are also counter-intuitive. Contrary to (management) expectations, exogenous variables prove to be more important to the repair firm (which we show by sensitivity analysis) and optimizing the endogenous control policy benefits the customers. Last Time Buy volume does not make the decisive difference; far more important is the disposal versus repair policy. PUSH control policy is outperformed by PULL, which exploits demand information and waits longer to decide between repair and disposal.     Prognostics-Based Two-Operator Competition for Maintenance and Service Part Logistics

    Prognostics and timely maintenance of components are critical to the continuing operation of a system. By implementing prognostics, it is possible for the operator to maintain the system in the right place at the right time. However, the complexity in the real world makes near-zero downtime difficult to achieve partly because of a possible shortage of required service parts. This is realistic and quite important in maintenance practice. To coordinate with a prognostics-based maintenance schedule, the operator must decide when to order service parts and how to compete with other operators who also need the same parts. This research addresses a joint decision-making approach that assists two operators in making proactive maintenance decisions and strategically competing for a service part that both operators rely on for their individual operations. To this end, a maintenance policy involving competition in service part procurement is developed based on the Stackelberg game-theoretic model. Variations of the policy are formulated for three different scenarios and solved via either backward induction or genetic algorithm methods. Unlike the first two scenarios, the possibility for either of the operators being the leader in such competitions is considered in the third scenario. A numerical study on wind turbine operation is provided to demonstrate the use of the joint decision-making approach in maintenance and service part logistics

    Remanufactured products are very popular with consumers due to their appeal to offer the latest technology with lower prices compared to brand new products. The quality of a remanufactured product induces hesitation for many consumers, in regards to its efficacy and reliability. One stratagem that remanufacturers could employ to encourage customer security are product warranties. This paper studies and scrutinizes the impact that would be had by offering renewing warranties on remanufactured products. This study was able to determine the optimal costs of warranty for two-dimensional non-renewable warranty offered on remanufactured products using the simulation model and design of experiments

    Optimizing a Multi-State Cold-Standby System with Multiple Vacations in the Repair and Loss of Units

    A complex multi-state redundant system with preventive maintenance subject to multiple events is considered. The online unit can undergo several types of failure: both internal and those provoked by external shocks. Multiple degradation levels are assumed as both internal and external. Degradation levels are observed by random inspections and, if they are major, the unit goes to a repair facility where preventive maintenance is carried out. This repair facility is composed of a single repairperson governed by a multiple vacation policy. This policy is set up according to the operational number of units. Two types of task can be performed by the repairperson, corrective repair and preventive maintenance. The times embedded in the system are phase type distributed and the model is built by using Markovian Arrival Processes with marked arrivals. Multiple performance measures besides the transient and stationary distribution are worked out through matrix-analytic methods. This methodology enables us to express the main results and the global development in a matrix-algorithmic form. To optimize the model, costs and rewards are included. A numerical example shows the versatility of the model

    The final order problem for repairable spare parts under condemnation

    We consider a manufacturer of complex machines that offers service contracts to her customers, committing herself to repair failed spare parts throughout a fixed service period. The suppliers of spare parts often discontinue the production of some parts as technology advances and ask the manufacturer to place a final order. We address the problem of determining final orders for such spare parts. The parts that we consider are repairable, but they are subject to the risk of condemnation. We build a transient Markovian model to represent the problem for a repairable spare part with a certain repair probability and repair lead time and we present some approximations that allow for further real life characteristics to be included. Furthermore, an approximate model that can be computed more efficiently is presented, and the sensitivity of the results obtained with respect to the problem parameters for both of the models is discussed

    After-sales services optimisation through dynamic opportunistic maintenance: a wind energy case study

    After-sales maintenance services can be a very profitable source of incomes for original equipment manufacturers (OEM) due to the increasing interest of assets’ users on performance-based contracts. However, when it concerns the product value-adding process, OEM have traditionally been more focused on improving their production processes, rather than on complementing their products by offering after-sales services; consequently leading to difficulties in offering them efficiently. Furthermore, both due to the high uncertainty of the assets’ behaviour and the inherent challenges of managing the maintenance process (e.g. maintenance strategy to be followed or resources to be deployed), it is complex to make business out of the provision of after-sales services. With the aim of helping the business and maintenance decision makers at this point, this paper proposes a framework for optimising the incomes of after-sales maintenance services through: 1) implementing advanced multi-objective opportunistic maintenance strategies that sistematically consider the assets’ operational context in order to perform preventive maintenance during most favourable conditions, 2) considering the specific OEMs’ and users’ needs, and 3) assessing both internal and external uncertainties that might condition the after-sales services’ success.     This paper presents a framework for planning and control of the spare parts supply chain inorganizations that use and maintain high-value capital assets. Decisions in the framework aredecomposed hierarchically and interfaces are described. We provide relevant literature to aiddecision making and identify open research topics. The framework can be used to increasethe eÂżciency, consistency and sustainability of decisions on how to plan and control a spareparts supply chain.
