    Asynchronous CDMA Systems with Random Spreading-Part II: Design Criteria

    Totally asynchronous code-division multiple-access (CDMA) systems are addressed. In Part I, the fundamental limits of asynchronous CDMA systems are analyzed in terms of spectral efficiency and SINR at the output of the optimum linear detector. The focus of Part II is the design of low-complexity implementations of linear multiuser detectors in systems with many users that admit a multistage representation, e.g. reduced rank multistage Wiener filters, polynomial expansion detectors, weighted linear parallel interference cancellers. The effects of excess bandwidth, chip-pulse shaping, and time delay distribution on CDMA with suboptimum linear receiver structures are investigated. Recursive expressions for universal weight design are given. The performance in terms of SINR is derived in the large-system limit and the performance improvement over synchronous systems is quantified.     Fast Decoder for Overloaded Uniquely Decodable Synchronous Optical CDMA

    In this paper, we propose a fast decoder algorithm for uniquely decodable (errorless) code sets for overloaded synchronous optical code-division multiple-access (O-CDMA) systems. The proposed decoder is designed in a such a way that the users can uniquely recover the information bits with a very simple decoder, which uses only a few comparisons. Compared to maximum-likelihood (ML) decoder, which has a high computational complexity for even moderate code lengths, the proposed decoder has much lower computational complexity. Simulation results in terms of bit error rate (BER) demonstrate that the performance of the proposed decoder for a given BER requires only 1-2 dB higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) than the ML decoder.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1806.0395

    Blind adaptive constrained reduced-rank parameter estimation based on constant modulus design for CDMA interference suppression

    This paper proposes a multistage decomposition for blind adaptive parameter estimation in the Krylov subspace with the code-constrained constant modulus (CCM) design criterion. Based on constrained optimization of the constant modulus cost function and utilizing the Lanczos algorithm and Arnoldi-like iterations, a multistage decomposition is developed for blind parameter estimation. A family of computationally efficient blind adaptive reduced-rank stochastic gradient (SG) and recursive least squares (RLS) type algorithms along with an automatic rank selection procedure are also devised and evaluated against existing methods. An analysis of the convergence properties of the method is carried out and convergence conditions for the reduced-rank adaptive algorithms are established. Simulation results consider the application of the proposed techniques to the suppression of multiaccess and intersymbol interference in DS-CDMA systems

    Blind multiuser detection using hidden markov models theory

    We present an adaptive algorithm based on the theory of hidden Markov models (HMM) which is capable of jointly detecting the users in a DS-CDMA system. The proposed technique is near-far resistant and completely blind in the sense that no knowledge of the signature sequences, channel state information or training sequences is required for any user. In addition to this, an estimate of the signature of each user convolved with its physical channel impulse response (CIR), and an estimate of the background noise variance are provided once convergence is achieved (as well as estimated data sequences).     Packet data communications over coded CDMA with hybrid type-II ARQ

    This dissertation presents in-depth investigation of turbo-coded CDNIA systems in packet data communication terminology. It is divided into three parts; (1) CDMA with hybrid FEC/ARQ in deterministic environment, (2) CDMA with hybrid FEC/ARQ in random access environment and (3) an implementation issue on turbo decoding. As a preliminary, the performance of CDMA with hybrid FEC/ARQ is investigated in deterministic environment. It highlights the practically achievable spectral efficiency of CDMA system with turbo codes and the effect of code rates on the performance of systems with MF and LMMSE receivers, respectively. For given ensemble distance spectra of punctured turbo codes, an improved union bound is used to evaluate the error probability of ML turbo decoder with MF receiver and with LMMSE receiver front-end and, then, the corresponding spectral efficiency is computed as a function of system load. In the second part, a generalized analytical framework is first provided to analyze hybrid type-11 ARQ in random access environment. When applying hybrid type-11 ARQ, probability of packet success and packet length is generally different from attempt to attempt. Since the conventional analytical model, customarily employed for ALOHA system with pure or hybrid type-I ARQ, cannot be applied for this case, an expanded analytical model is introduced. It can be regarded as a network of queues and Jackson and Burke\u27s theorems can be applied to simplify the analysis. The second part is further divided into two sub topics, i.e. CDMA slotted ALOHA with hybrid type-11 ARQ using packet combining and CDMA unslotted ALOHA with hybrid type-11 ARQ using code combining. For code combining, the rate compatible punctured turbo (RCPT) codes are examined. In the third part, noticing that the decoding delay is crucial to the fast ARQ, a parallel MAP algorithm is proposed to reduce the computational decoding delay of turbo codes. It utilizes the forward and backward variables computed in the previous iteration to provide boundary distributions for each sub-block MAP decoder. It has at least two advantages over the existing parallel scheme; No performance degradation and No additional computation

    Implementable Wireless Access for B3G Networks - III: Complexity Reducing Transceiver Structures

    This article presents a comprehensive overview of some of the research conducted within Mobile VCE’s Core Wireless Access Research Programme,1 a key focus of which has naturally been on MIMO transceivers. The series of articles offers a coherent view of how the work was structured and comprises a compilation of material that has been presented in detail elsewhere (see references within the article). In this article MIMO channel measurements, analysis, and modeling, which were presented previously in the first article in this series of four, are utilized to develop compact and distributed antenna arrays. Parallel activities led to research into low-complexity MIMO single-user spacetime coding techniques, as well as SISO and MIMO multi-user CDMA-based transceivers for B3G systems. As well as feeding into the industry’s in-house research program, significant extensions of this work are now in hand, within Mobile VCE’s own core activity, aiming toward securing major improvements in delivery efficiency in future wireless systems through crosslayer operation

    This survey guides the reader through the open literature on the principle of initial synchronisation in single-antenna-assisted single- and multi-carrier Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) as well as Direct Sequence-Ultra WideBand (DS-UWB) systems, with special emphasis on the DownLink (DL). There is a paucity of up-to-date surveys and review articles on initial synchronization solutions for MIMO-aided and cooperative systems - even though there is a plethora of papers on both MIMOs and on cooperative systems, which assume perfect synchronization. Hence this paper aims to ?ll the related gap in the literature
