    Differentiable Subdivision Surface Fitting

    In this paper, we present a powerful differentiable surface fitting technique to derive a compact surface representation for a given dense point cloud or mesh, with application in the domains of graphics and CAD/CAM. We have chosen the Loop subdivision surface, which in the limit yields the smooth surface underlying the point cloud, and can handle complex surface topology better than other popular compact representations, such as NURBS. The principal idea is to fit the Loop subdivision surface not directly to the point cloud, but to the IMLS (implicit moving least squares) surface defined over the point cloud. As both Loop subdivision and IMLS have analytical expressions, we are able to formulate the problem as an unconstrained minimization problem of a completely differentiable function that can be solved with standard numerical solvers. Differentiability enables us to integrate the subdivision surface into any deep learning method for point clouds or meshes. We demonstrate the versatility and potential of this approach by using it in conjunction with a differentiable renderer to robustly reconstruct compact surface representations of spatial-temporal sequences of dense meshes

    Grid-based Finite Elements System for Solving Laplace-Beltrami Equations on 2-Manifolds

    Solving the Poisson equation has numerous important applications. On a Riemannian 2-manifold, the task is most often formulated in terms of finite elements and two challenges commonly arise: discretizing the space of functions and solving the resulting system of equations. In this work, we describe a finite elements system that simultaneously addresses both aspects. The idea is to define a space of functions in 3D and then restrict the 3D functions to the mesh. Unlike traditional approaches, our method is tessellation-independent and has a direct control over system complexity. More importantly, the resulting function space comes with a multi-resolution structure supporting an efficient multigrid solver, and the regularity of the function space can be leveraged in parallelizing/streaming the computation. We evaluate our framework by conducting several experiments. These include a spectral analysis that reveals the embedding-invariant robustness of our discretization, and a benchmark for solver convergence/performance that reveals the competitiveness of our approach against other state-of-the-art methods. We apply our work to several geometry-processing applications. Using curvature flows, we show that we can support efficient surface evolution where the embedding changes with time. Formulating surface filtering as a solution to the screened-Poisson equation, we demonstrate that we can support an anisotropic surface editing system that processes high resolution meshes in real time

    A robust patch-based synthesis framework for combining inconsistent images

    Current methods for combining different images produce visible artifacts when the sources have very different textures and structures, come from far view points, or capture dynamic scenes with motions. In this thesis, we propose a patch-based synthesis algorithm to plausibly combine different images that have color, texture, structural, and geometric inconsistencies. For some applications such as cloning and stitching where a gradual blend is required, we present a new method for synthesizing a transition region between two source images, such that inconsistent properties change gradually from one source to the other. We call this process image melding. For gradual blending, we generalized patch-based optimization foundation with three key generalizations: First, we enrich the patch search space with additional geometric and photometric transformations. Second, we integrate image gradients into the patch representation and replace the usual color averaging with a screened Poisson equation solver. Third, we propose a new energy based on mixed L2/L0 norms for colors and gradients that produces a gradual transition between sources without sacrificing texture sharpness. Together, all three generalizations enable patch-based solutions to a broad class of image melding problems involving inconsistent sources: object cloning, stitching challenging panoramas, hole filling from multiple photos, and image harmonization. We also demonstrate another application which requires us to address inconsistencies across the images: high dynamic range (HDR) reconstruction using sequential exposures. In this application, the results will suffer from objectionable artifacts for dynamic scenes if the inconsistencies caused by significant scene motions are not handled properly. In this thesis, we propose a new approach to HDR reconstruction that uses information in all exposures while being more robust to motion than previous techniques. Our algorithm is based on a novel patch-based energy-minimization formulation that integrates alignment and reconstruction in a joint optimization through an equation we call the HDR image synthesis equation. This allows us to produce an HDR result that is aligned to one of the exposures yet contains information from all of them. These two applications (image melding and high dynamic range reconstruction) show that patch based methods like the one proposed in this dissertation can address inconsistent images and could open the door to many new image editing applications in the future

    High-productivity, high-performance workflow for virus-scale electrostatic simulations with Bempp-Exafmm

    Biomolecular electrostatics is key in protein function and the chemical processes affecting it.Implicit-solvent models expressed by the Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) equation can provide insights with less computational power than full atomistic models, making large-system studies -- at the scale of viruses, for example -- accessible to more researchers. This paper presents a high-productivity and high-performance computational workflow combining Exafmm, a fast multipole method (FMM) library, and Bempp, a Galerkin boundary element method (BEM) package. It integrates an easy-to-use Python interface with well-optimized computational kernels that are written in compiled languages. Researchers can run PB simulations interactively via Jupyter notebooks, enabling faster prototyping and analyzing. We provide results that showcase the capability of the software, confirm correctness, and evaluate its performance with problem sizes between 8,000 and 2 million boundary elements. A study comparing two variants of the boundary integral formulation in regards to algebraic conditioning showcases the power of this interactive computing platform to give useful answers with just a few lines of code. As a form of solution verification, mesh refinement studies with a spherical geometry as well as with a real biological structure (5PTI) confirm convergence at the expected 1/N1/N rate, for NN boundary elements. Performance results include timings, breakdowns, and computational complexity. Exafmm offers evaluation speeds of just a few seconds for tens of millions of points, and O(N)\mathcal{O}(N) scaling. This allowed computing the solvation free energy of a Zika virus, represented by 1.6 million atoms and 10 million boundary elements, at 80-min runtime on a single compute node (dual 20-core Intel Xeon Gold 6148). All results in the paper are presented with utmost care for reproducibility.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure

    Practical SVBRDF Acquisition of 3D Objects with Unstructured Flash Photography

    Capturing spatially-varying bidirectional reflectance distribution functions (SVBRDFs) of 3D objects with just a single, hand-held camera (such as an off-the-shelf smartphone or a DSLR camera) is a difficult, open problem. Previous works are either limited to planar geometry, or rely on previously scanned 3D geometry, thus limiting their practicality. There are several technical challenges that need to be overcome: First, the built-in flash of a camera is almost colocated with the lens, and at a fixed position; this severely hampers sampling procedures in the light-view space. Moreover, the near-field flash lights the object partially and unevenly. In terms of geometry, existing multiview stereo techniques assume diffuse reflectance only, which leads to overly smoothed 3D reconstructions, as we show in this paper. We present a simple yet powerful framework that removes the need for expensive, dedicated hardware, enabling practical acquisition of SVBRDF information from real-world, 3D objects with a single, off-the-shelf camera with a built-in flash. In addition, by removing the diffuse reflection assumption and leveraging instead such SVBRDF information, our method outputs high-quality 3D geometry reconstructions, including more accurate high-frequency details than state-of-the-art multiview stereo techniques. We formulate the joint reconstruction of SVBRDFs, shading normals, and 3D geometry as a multi-stage, iterative inverse-rendering reconstruction pipeline. Our method is also directly applicable to any existing multiview 3D reconstruction technique. We present results of captured objects with complex geometry and reflectance; we also validate our method numerically against other existing approaches that rely on dedicated hardware, additional sources of information, or both

    HIGH QUALITY HUMAN 3D BODY MODELING, TRACKING AND APPLICATION

    Geometric reconstruction of dynamic objects is a fundamental task of computer vision and graphics, and modeling human body of high fidelity is considered to be a core of this problem. Traditional human shape and motion capture techniques require an array of surrounding cameras or subjects wear reflective markers, resulting in a limitation of working space and portability. In this dissertation, a complete process is designed from geometric modeling detailed 3D human full body and capturing shape dynamics over time using a flexible setup to guiding clothes/person re-targeting with such data-driven models. As the mechanical movement of human body can be considered as an articulate motion, which is easy to guide the skin animation but has difficulties in the reverse process to find parameters from images without manual intervention, we present a novel parametric model, GMM-BlendSCAPE, jointly taking both linear skinning model and the prior art of BlendSCAPE (Blend Shape Completion and Animation for PEople) into consideration and develop a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) to infer both body shape and pose from incomplete observations. We show the increased accuracy of joints and skin surface estimation using our model compared to the skeleton based motion tracking. To model the detailed body, we start with capturing high-quality partial 3D scans by using a single-view commercial depth camera. Based on GMM-BlendSCAPE, we can then reconstruct multiple complete static models of large pose difference via our novel non-rigid registration algorithm. With vertex correspondences established, these models can be further converted into a personalized drivable template and used for robust pose tracking in a similar GMM framework. Moreover, we design a general purpose real-time non-rigid deformation algorithm to accelerate this registration. Last but not least, we demonstrate a novel virtual clothes try-on application based on our personalized model utilizing both image and depth cues to synthesize and re-target clothes for single-view videos of different people

    Screened poisson hyperfields for shape coding

    We present a novel perspective on shape characterization using the screened Poisson equation. We discuss that the effect of the screening parameter is a change of measure of the underlying metric space. Screening also indicates a conditioned random walker biased by the choice of measure. A continuum of shape fields is created by varying the screening parameter or, equivalently, the bias of the random walker. In addition to creating a regional encoding of the diffusion with a different bias, we further break down the influence of boundary interactions by considering a number of independent random walks, each emanating from a certain boundary point, whose superposition yields the screened Poisson field. Probing the screened Poisson equation from these two complementary perspectives leads to a high-dimensional hyperfield: a rich characterization of the shape that encodes global, local, interior, and boundary interactions. To extract particular shape information as needed in a compact way from the hyperfield, we apply various decompositions either to unveil parts of a shape or parts of a boundary or to create consistent mappings. The latter technique involves lower-dimensional embeddings, which we call screened Poisson encoding maps (SPEM). The expressive power of the SPEM is demonstrated via illustrative experiments as well as a quantitative shape retrieval experiment over a public benchmark database on which the SPEM method shows a high-ranking performance among the existing state-of-the-art shape retrieval methods

    Signal Processing on Textured Meshes

    In this thesis we extend signal processing techniques originally formulated in the context of image processing to techniques that can be applied to signals on arbitrary triangles meshes. We develop methods for the two most common representations of signals on triangle meshes: signals sampled at the vertices of a finely tessellated mesh, and signals mapped to a coarsely tessellated mesh through texture maps. Our first contribution is the combination of Lagrangian Integration and the Finite Elements Method in the formulation of two signal processing tasks: Shock Filters for texture and geometry sharpening, and Optical Flow for texture registration. Our second contribution is the formulation of Gradient-Domain processing within the texture atlas. We define a function space that handles chart discontinuities, and linear operators that capture the metric distortion introduced by the parameterization. Our third contribution is the construction of a spatiotemporal atlas parameterization for evolving meshes. Our method introduces localized remeshing operations and a compact parameterization that improves geometry and texture video compression. We show temporally coherent signal processing using partial correspondences
