    A Continuous-Time Nonlinear Observer for Estimating Structure from Motion from Omnidirectional Optic Flow

    Various insect species utilize certain types of self-motion to perceive structure in their local environment, a process known as active vision. This dissertation presents the development of a continuous-time formulated observer for estimating structure from motion that emulates the biological phenomenon of active vision. In an attempt to emulate the wide-field of view of compound eyes and neurophysiology of insects, the observer utilizes an omni-directional optic flow field. Exponential stability of the observer is assured provided the persistency of excitation condition is met. Persistency of excitation is assured by altering the direction of motion sufficiently quickly. An equal convergence rate on the entire viewable area can be achieved by executing certain prototypical maneuvers. Practical implementation of the observer is accomplished both in simulation and via an actual flying quadrotor testbed vehicle. Furthermore, this dissertation presents the vehicular implementation of a complimentary navigation methodology known as wide-field integration of the optic flow field. The implementation of the developed insect-inspired navigation methodologies on physical testbed vehicles utilized in this research required the development of many subsystems that comprise a control and navigation suite, including avionics development and state sensing, model development via system identification, feedback controller design, and state estimation strategies. The unknown parameters, wind disturbances, and system nonlinearity are considered as external disturbances that are estimated using a multi-gap observer. The estimates obtained are used in the control law to improve the stability rate for flight regimes

    International audienceThe small autonomous vehicles of the future will have to navigate close to obstacles in highly unpredictable environments. Risky tasks of this kind may require novel sensors and control methods that differ from conventional approaches. Recent ethological findings have shown that complex navigation tasks such as obstacle avoidance and speed control are performed by flying insects on the basis of optic flow (OF) cues, although insects' compound eyes have a very poor spatial resolution. The present paper deals with the implementation of an optic flow-based autopilot on a fully autonomous hovercraft. Tests were performed on this small (878-gram) innovative robotic platform in straight and tapered corridors lined with natural panoramas. A bilateral OF regulator controls the robot's forward speed (up to 0.8 m/s), while a unilateral OF regulator controls the robot's clearance from the two walls. A micro-gyrometer and a tiny magnetic compass ensure that the hovercraft travels forward in the corridor without yawing. The lateral OFs are measured by two minimalist eyes mounted sideways opposite to each other. For the first time, the hovercraft was found to be capable of adjusting both its forward speed and its clearance from the walls, in both straight and tapered corridors, without requiring any distance or speed measurements}, that is, without any need for on-board rangefinders or tachometers

    Rotary-wing MAV Modeling & Control for indoor scenarios

    This paper is about modeling and control of Miniature Aerial Vehicles ¿MAVs for indoor scenarios, specially using, micro coaxial and quadrotor systems. Mathematical models for simulation and control are introduced and subsequently applied to the commercial aircraft: the DraganFlyer quadrotor and the Micro-Mosquito coaxial flying vehicle. The MAVs have been hardware-modified in order to perform experimental autonomous flight. A novel approach for control based on Hybrid Backstepping and the Frenet-Serret theory is used for attitude stabilization (Backstepping+FST), introducing a desired attitude angle acceleration function dependent on aircraft velocity. Results of autonomous hovering and tracking are presented based on the scheme we propose for control and attitude stabilization when MAV is maneuvering at moderate speeds

    Design, Development and Implementation of Intelligent Algorithms to Increase Autonomy of Quadrotor Unmanned Missions

    This thesis presents the development and implementation of intelligent algorithms to increase autonomy of unmanned missions for quadrotor type UAVs. A six-degree-of freedom dynamic model of a quadrotor is developed in Matlab/Simulink in order to support the design of control algorithms previous to real-time implementation. A dynamic inversion based control architecture is developed to minimize nonlinearities and improve robustness when the system is driven outside bounds of nominal design. The design and the implementation of the control laws are described. An immunity-based architecture is introduced for monitoring quadrotor health and its capabilities for detecting abnormal conditions are successfully demonstrated through flight testing. A vision-based navigation scheme is developed to enhance the quadrotor autonomy under GPS denied environments. An optical flow sensor and a laser range finder are used within an Extended Kalman Filter for position estimation and its estimation performance is analyzed by comparing against measurements from a GPS module. Flight testing results are presented where the performances are analyzed, showing a substantial increase of controllability and tracking when the developed algorithms are used under dynamically changing environments.     Low Speed Flap-bounding in Ornithopters and its Inspiration on the Energy Efficient Flight of Quadrotors

    Flap-bounding, a form of intermittent flight, is often exhibited by small birds over their entire range of flight speeds. The purpose of flap-bounding is unclear during low to medium speed (2 - 8 m/s) flight from a mechanical-power perspective: aerodynamic models suggest continuous flapping would require less power output and lower cost of transport. This thesis works towards the understanding of the advantages of flap-bounding and tries to employ the underlining principle to design quadrotor maneuver to improve power efficiency. To explore the functional significance of flap-bounding at low speeds, I measured body trajectory and kinematics of wings and tail of zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata, N=2) during flights in a laboratory between two perches. The flights consist of three phases: initial, descending and ascending. Zebra finch first accelerated using continuous flapping, then descended, featuring intermittent bounds. The flight was completed by ascending using nearly-continuous flapping. When exiting bounds in descending phase, they achieved higher than pre-bound forward velocity by swinging body forward similar to pendulum motion with conserved mechanical energy. Takeoffs of black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus, N=3) in the wild was recorded and I found similar kinematics. Our modeling of power output indicates finch achieves higher velocity (13%) with lower cost of transport (9%) when descending, compared with continuous flapping in previously-studied pigeons. To apply the findings to the design of quadrotor motion, a mimicking maneuver was developed that consisted of five phases: projectile drop, drop transition, pendulum swing, rise transition and projectile rise. The quadrotor outputs small amount (4 N) of thrust during projectile drop phase and ramps up the thrust while increasing body pitch angle during the drop transition phase until the thrust enables the quadrotor to advance in pendulum-like motion in the pendulum swing phase. As the quadrotor reaches the symmetric point with respect to the vertical axis of the pendulum motion, it engages in reducing the thrust and pitch angle during the rise transition phase until the thrust is lowered to the same level as the beginning of the maneuver and the body angle of attack minimized (0.2 deg) in the projectile rise phase. The trajectory of the maneuver was optimized to yield minimum cost of transport. The quadrotor moves forward by tracking the cycle of the optimized trajectory repeatedly. Due to the aggressive nature of the maneuver, we developed new algorithms using onboard sensors to determine the estimated position and attitude. By employing nonlinear controller, we showed that cost of transport of the flap-bounding inspired maneuver is lower (28%) than conventional constant forward flight, which makes it the preferable strategy in high speed flight (≥15 m/s)
