    Qualitative Fault Isolation of Hybrid Systems: A Structural Model Decomposition-Based Approach

    Quick and robust fault diagnosis is critical to ensuring safe operation of complex engineering systems. A large number of techniques are available to provide fault diagnosis in systems with continuous dynamics. However, many systems in aerospace and industrial environments are best represented as hybrid systems that consist of discrete behavioral modes, each with its own continuous dynamics. These hybrid dynamics make the on-line fault diagnosis task computationally more complex due to the large number of possible system modes and the existence of autonomous mode transitions. This paper presents a qualitative fault isolation framework for hybrid systems based on structural model decomposition. The fault isolation is performed by analyzing the qualitative information of the residual deviations. However, in hybrid systems this process becomes complex due to possible existence of observation delays, which can cause observed deviations to be inconsistent with the expected deviations for the current mode in the system. The great advantage of structural model decomposition is that (i) it allows to design residuals that respond to only a subset of the faults, and (ii) every time a mode change occurs, only a subset of the residuals will need to be reconfigured, thus reducing the complexity of the reasoning process for isolation purposes.     Improving Distributed Diagnosis Through Structural Model Decomposition

    Complex engineering systems require efficient fault diagnosis methodologies, but centralized approaches do not scale well, and this motivates the development of distributed solutions. This work presents an event-based approach for distributed diagnosis of abrupt parametric faults in continuous systems, by using the structural model decomposition capabilities provided by Possible Conflicts. We develop a distributed diagnosis algorithm that uses residuals computed by extending Possible Conflicts to build local event-based diagnosers based on global diagnosability analysis. The proposed approach is applied to a multitank system, and results demonstrate an improvement in the design of local diagnosers. Since local diagnosers use only a subset of the residuals, and use subsystem models to compute residuals (instead of the global system model), the local diagnosers are more efficient than previously developed distributed approaches

    Integration of a failure monitoring within a hybrid dynamic simulation environment

    The complexity and the size of the industrial chemical processes induce the monitoring of a growing number of process variables. Their knowledge is generally based on the measurements of system variables and on the physico-chemical models of the process. Nevertheless this information is imprecise because of process and measurement noise. So the research ways aim at developing new and more powerful techniques for the detection of process fault. In this work, we present a method for the fault detection based on the comparison between the real system and the reference model evolution generated by the extended Kalman filter. The reference model is simulated by the dynamic hybrid simulator, PrODHyS. It is a general object-oriented environment which provides common and reusable components designed for the development and the management of dynamic simulation of industrial systems. The use of this method is illustrated through a didactic example relating to the field of Chemical Process System Engineering

    Outline of a fault diagnosis system for a large-scale board machine

    Global competition forces process industries to continuously optimize plant operation. One of the latest trends for efficiency and plant availability improvement is to set up fault diagnosis and maintenance systems for online industrial use. This paper presents a methodology for developing industrial fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) systems. Since model or data-based diagnosis of all components cannot be achieved online on a large-scale basis, the focus must be narrowed down to the most likely faulty components responsible for abnormal process behavior. One of the key elements here is fault analysis. The paper describes and briefly discusses also other development phases, process decomposition, and the selection of FDD methods. The paper ends with an FDD case study of a large-scale industrial board machine including a description of the fault analysis and FDD algorithms for the resulting focus areas. Finally, the testing and validation results are presented and discussed.Peer reviewe

    Diagnosability-Based Sensor Placement through Structural Model Decomposition

    Systems health management, and in particular fault diagnosis, is important for ensuring safe, correct, and efficient operation of complex engineering systems. The performance of an online health monitoring system depends critically on the available sensors of the system. However, the set of selected sensors is subject to many constraints, such as cost and weight, and hence, these sensors must be selected judiciously. This paper presents an offline design-time sensor placement approach for complex systems. Our diagnosis method is built upon the analysis of model-based residuals, which are computed using structural model decomposition. Sensor placement in this framework manifests as a residual selection problem, and we aim to find the set of residuals that achieves single-fault diagnosability of the system, uses the minimum number of sensors, and corresponds to the best model decomposition for the best distribution of the diagnosis system. We present a set of algorithms for solving this problem and compare their performance in terms of computational complexity and optimality of solutions. We demonstrate the approach using a benchmark multi-tank system

    Fault Diagnosis of Hybrid Systems with Dynamic Bayesian Networks and Hybrid Possible Conficts

    Hybrid systems are very important in our society, we can find them in many engineering fields. They can develop a task by themselves or they can interact with people so they have to work in a nominal and safe state. Model-based Diagnosis (MBD) is a diagnosis branch that bases its decisions in models. This dissertation is placed in the MBD framework with Artificial Intelligence techniques, which is known as DX community. The kind of hybrid systems we focus on have a continuous behaviour commanded by discrete events. There are several works already done in the diagnosis of hybrid systems field. Most of them need to pre-enumerate all the possible modes in the system even if they are never visited during the process. To solve that problem, some authors have presented the Hybrid Bond Graph (HBG) modeling technique, that is an extension of Bond Graphs. HBGs do not need to enumerate all the system modes, they are built as the system visits them at run time. Regarding the faults that can appear in a hybrid system, they can be divided in two main groups: (1) Discrete faults, and (2) parametric or continuous faults. The discrete faults are related to the hybrid nature of the systems while the parametric or continuous faults appear as faults in the system parameters or in the sensors. Both types af faults have not been considered in a unified diagnosis architecture for hybrid systems. The diagnosis process can be divided in three main stages: Fault Detection, Fault Isolation and Fault Identification. Computing the set of Possible Conflicts (PCs) is a compilation technique used in MBD of continuous systems. They provide a decomposition of a system in subsystems with minimal analytical redundancy that makes the isolation process more efficient. They can be used for fault detection and isolation tasks by means of the Fault Signature Matrix (FSM). The FSM is a matrix that relates the different parameters (fault candidates) in a system and the PCs where they are used

    An Integrated Framework for Model-Based Distributed Diagnosis and Prognosis

    Diagnosis and prognosis are necessary tasks for system reconfiguration and fault-adaptive control in complex systems. Diagnosis consists of detection, isolation and identification of faults, while prognosis consists of prediction of the remaining useful life of systems. This paper presents a novel integrated framework for model-based distributed diagnosis and prognosis, where system decomposition is used to enable the diagnosis and prognosis tasks to be performed in a distributed way. We show how different submodels can be automatically constructed to solve the local diagnosis and prognosis problems. We illustrate our approach using a simulated four-wheeled rover for different fault scenarios. Our experiments show that our approach correctly performs distributed fault diagnosis and prognosis in an efficient and robust manner
