    The design of a generalised approach to the programming of systems of systems

    The world's computing infrastructure is increasingly differentiating into self-contained sub-systems (e.g. Internet of Things installations, clouds, VANETs, ...), which are post-hoc composed to generate value-added functionality (“systems of systems”). Today, however, such system-of-systems composition is typically carried out in an ad-hoc and infrastructure-dependent manner, with obvious associated disadvantages. In this paper, we propose a generalised system-of-systems-oriented programming approach that enables programmers to manage the composition of systems without a need for intimate knowledge of their internals, and also facilitates dynamic and spontaneous system composition, as systems discover each other opportunistically in their environment

    Collaboration in Opportunistic Networks

    Motivation. With the increasing integration of wireless short-range communication technologies (Bluetooth, 802.11b WiFi) into mobile devices, novel applications for spontaneous communication, interaction and collaboration are possible. We distinguish between active and passive collaboration. The devices help users become aware of each other and stimulate face-to-face conversation (active collaboration). Also, autonomous device communication for sharing information without user interaction is possible, i.e., devices pass information to other devices in their vicinity (passive collaboration). Both, active and passive collaboration requires a user to specify what kind of information he offers and what kind of information he is interested in. Object of Research: Opportunistic Networks. Spontaneous communication of mobile devices leads to so-called opportunistic networks, a new and promising evolution in mobile ad-hoc networking. They are formed by mobile devices which communicate with each other while users are in close proximity. There are two prominent characteristics present in opportunistic networks: 1) A user provides his personal device as a network node. 2) Users are a priori unknown to each other. Objectives. Due to the fact that a user dedicates his personal device as a node to the opportunistic network and interacts with other users unknown to him, collaboration raises questions concerning two important human aspects: user privacy and incentives. The users’ privacy is at risk, since passive collaboration applications may expose personal information about a user. Furthermore, some form of incentive is needed to encourage a user to share his personal device resources with others. Both issues, user privacy and incentives, need to be taken into account in order to increase the user acceptability of opportunistic network applications. These aspects have not been addressed together with the technical tasks in prior opportunistic network research. Scientific Contribution and Evaluation. This thesis investigates opportunistic networks in their entirety, i.e., our technical design decisions are appropriate for user privacy preservation and incentive schemes. In summary, the proposed concepts comprise system components, a node architecture, a system model and a simple one-hop communication paradigm for opportunistic network applications. One focus of this work is a profile-based data dissemination mechanism. A formal model for this mechanism will be presented. On top of that, we show how to preserve the privacy of a user by avoiding static and thus linkable data and an incentive scheme that is suitable for opportunistic network applications. The evaluation of this work is twofold. We implemented two prototypes on off-the-shelf hardware to show the technical feasibility of our opportunistic network concepts. Also, the prototypes were used to carry out a number of runtime measurements. Then, we developed a novel two-step simulation method for opportunistic data dissemination. The simulation combines real world user traces with artificial user mobility models, in order to model user movements more realistically. We investigate our opportunistic data dissemination process under various settings, including different communication ranges and user behavior patterns. Our results depict, within the limits of our model and assumptions, a good performance of the data dissemination process

    A Camera-Only Based Approach to Traffic Parameter Estimation Using Mobile Observer Methods

    As vehicles become more modern, a large majority of vehicles on the road will have the required sensors to smoothly interact with other vehicles and infrastructure on the road. There will be many benefits of this new connectivity between vehicles on the road but one of the most profound improvements will be in the area of road accident prevention. Vehicles will be able to share information vital to road safety to oncoming vehicles and vehicles that are occluded so they do not have a direct line of sight to see a pedestrian or another vehicle on the road. Another advantage of these modern connected vehicles is that different traffic parameters can be more easily estimated using the onboard sensors and technologies in the vehicles. For many decades traffic engineers have been able to estimate different traffic parameters like traffic flow, density, and velocity based on how many vehicles the primary vehicle passes and how many vehicles pass the primary vehicles. For much of the time that traffic engineers have been working on traffic estimation, it has been done using more manual and tedious methods. In this paper, a more novel approach of determining these traffic parameters is used. Also, one of the problems with traffic parameter estimation is that sometimes the results are not accurate because of vehicles that might not have been counted because of occlusion. In this paper, a proposal is put forward on how this can be remedied utilizing the connected vehicle\u27s framework

    Doutoramento em Engenharia InformáticaUma das áreas de investigação em Telecomunicações de interesse crescente prende-se com os futuros sistemas de comunicações móveis de 4a geração e além destes. Nos últimos anos tem sido desenvolvido o conceito de redes comunitárias, no qual os utilizadores se agregam de acordo com interesses comuns. Estes conceitos têm sido explorados de uma forma horizontal em diferentes camadas da comunicação, desde as redes comunitárias de comunicação (Seattle Wireless ou Personal Telco, p.ex.) até às redes de interesses peer-to-peer. No entanto, estas redes são usualmente vistas como redes de overlay, ou simplesmente redes de associação livre. Na prática, a noção de uma rede auto-organizada, completamente orientada ao serviço/comunidade, integralmente suportada em termos de arquitetura, não existe. Assim este trabalho apresenta uma realização original nesta área de criação de redes comunitárias, com uma arquitetura subjacente orientada a serviço, e que suporta integralmente múltiplas redes comunitárias no mesmo dispositivo, com todas as características de segurança, confiança e disponibilização de serviço necessárias neste tipo de cenários (um nó pode pertencer simultaneamente a mais do que uma rede comunitária). Devido à sua importância para os sistemas de redes comunitárias, foi dado particular atenção a aspetos de gestão de recursos e controlo de acessos. Ambos realizados de uma forma descentralizada e considerando mecanismos dotados de grande escalabilidade. Para isso, é apresentada uma linguagem de políticas que suporta a criação de comunidades virtuais. Esta linguagem não é apenas utilizada para o mapeamento da estrutura social dos membros da comunidade, como para, gerir dispositivos, recursos e serviços detidos pelos membros, de uma forma controlada e distribuída.One of the research areas with increasing interest in the field of telecommunications, are the ones related to future telecommunication systems, both 4th generation and beyond. In parallel, during the last years, several concepts have been developed related to clustering of users according to their interested, in the form of community networks. Solutions proposed for these concepts tackle the challenges horizontally, for each layer of the communication stack, ranging from community based communication networks (e.g. Seattle Wireless, or Personal Telco), to interest networks based on peer-to-peer protocols. However, these networks are presented either as free joining, or overlay networks. In practice, the notion of a self-organized, service and community oriented network, with these principles embedded in its design principles, is yet to be developed. This work presents an novel instantiation of a solution in the area of community networks, with a underlying architecture which is fully service oriented, and envisions the support for multiple community networks in the same device. Considerations regarding security, trust and service availability for this type of environments are also taken. Due to the importance of resource management and access control, in the context of community driven communication networks, a special focus was given to the support of scalable and decentralized management and access control methods. For this purpose, it is presented a policy language which supports the creation and management of virtual communities. The language is not only used for mapping the social structure of the community members, but also to, following a distributed approach, manage devices, resources and services owned by each community member
