    An integrated model highlighting information literacy and knowledge formation in information behaviour

    Purpose This paper reviews key models of people’s information behaviour (IB) exploring the integration of the concepts of information literacy (IL) and knowledge in their designs. Scholarly perspectives portray information literacy as providing individuals with capacity for good information practices that result in generating new knowledge. It is surprising that this important perspective is not reflected in the reviewed information behaviour models. This paper contributes to the literature base by proposing a new model highlighting IL and knowledge as important concepts within the information behaviour discourse. Approach A discourse of the integration of information literacy and knowledge, which are integral factors, associated with IB, in selected IB models. Findings Identifying a need for information and understanding its context is an IL attribute. IL underpins information behaviour in providing awareness of information sources; how to search and use information appropriately for solving information needs and leveraging generated new knowledge. The generation of new knowledge results from using information, in a process that combines with sense-making and adaption. Correspondingly, the knowledge that develops, increases capability for sense-making and adaptation of information to suit various contexts of need; iteratively. Originality/value A new model of information behaviour; the Causative and Outcome Factors of Information Behaviour (COFIB) is proposed. COFIB stresses that information literacy and knowledge are prominent factors within the general framework of people’s information behaviour. The model emphasises knowledge generation as the outcome of information behaviour, applied in solving problems within specific contexts

    Modelling topological features of swarm behaviour in space and time with persistence landscapes

    This paper presents a model of swarm behaviour that encodes the spatial-temporal characteristics of topological features such as holes and connected components. Specifically, the persistence of topological features with respect to time are computed using zig-zag persistent homology. This information is in turn modelled as a persistence landscape which forms a normed vector space and facilitates the application of statistical and data mining techniques. Validation of the proposed model is performed using a real data set corresponding to a swarm of fish. It is demonstrated that the proposed model may be used to perform retrieval and clustering of swarm behaviour in terms of topological features. In fact, it is discovered that clustering returns clusters corresponding to the swarm behaviours of flock, torus and disordered. These are the most frequently occurring types of behaviour exhibited by swarms in general

    A framework for investigating pet owners’ health information behaviour intervention

    Objective: This study is a part of a research aiming to determine whether an information prescription given by veterinarians in a general pet clinic would change the behaviours of pet owners about using pet health information resources on the internet. For this purpose, we develop a model to intervene and evaluate pet owner’s online health information seeking behaviour (HISB). Methods: The framework emerges from a systematic literature review and qualitative content analysis. NVivo 10 was used in this paper as an analysis tool for coding text and for supporting framework generation through identifying patterns. Results: We indicate the most influencing factors on online HISB of pet owners, including human-pet relationship, veterinary-client interactions, and pet owner’s health literacy. Discussion: We strengthen our findings further by learning from health behaviour models which lead to a better pet health promotion. Based on adaption of the Interaction model of client health behaviour (IMCHB), we developed our initial model. Conclusion: this model serves as an initial step to engage information scientists and veterinarians for planning on pet health information outreach. However, future research needs to test the proposed model in various case studies and populations

    A source modelling system and its use for uncertainty management

    Human agents have to deal with a considerable amount of information from their environment and are also continuously faced with the need to take actions. As that information is largely of an uncertain nature, human agents have to decide whether, or how much, to believe individual pieces of information. To enable a reasoning system to deal in general with the demands of a real environment, and with information from human sources in particular, requires tools for uncertainty management and belief formation. This thesis presents a model for the management of uncertain information from human sources. Dealing, more specifically, with information which has been pre-processed by a natural language processor and transformed into an event-based representation, the model assesses information, forms beliefs and resolves conflicts between them in order to maintain a consistent world model. The approach is built on the fundamental principle that the uncertainty of information from people can, in the majority of situations, successfully be assessed through source models which record factors concerning the source's abilities and trustworthiness. These models are adjusted to reflect changes in the behaviour of the source. A mechanism is presented together with the underlying principles to reproduce such a behaviour. A high-level design is also given to make the proposed model reconstructible, and the successful operation of the model is demonstrated on two detailed examples
