    CacophonyViz: Visualisation of Birdsong Derived Ecological Health Indicators

    The purpose of this work was to create an easy to interpret visualisation of a simple index that represents the quantity and quality of bird life in New Zealand. The index was calculated from an algorithm that assigned various weights to each species of bird. This work is important as it forms a part of the ongoing work by the Cacophony Project which aims to eradicate pests that currently destroy New Zealand native birds and their habitat. The map will be used to promote the Cacophony project to a wide public audience and encourage their participation by giving relevant feedback on the effects of intervention such as planting and trapping in their communities. The Design Science methodology guided this work through the creation of a series of prototypes that through their evaluation built on lessons learnt at each stage resulting in a final artifact that successfully displayed the index at various locations across a map of New Zealand. It is concluded that the artifact is ready and suitable for deployment once the availability of real data from the automatic analysis of audio recordings from multiple locations becomes available

    Effective Vector Data Transmission and Visualization Using HTML5

    In this paper we evaluate the potential of the next major revision of HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), that is HTML5, to provide an effective platform for the transmission and visualization of vector based geographical data. Relative to the current version of HTML, HTML 4.01, HTML5 offers an improved platform to perform these tasks through greater interoperability with existing technologies and the introduction of many new API’s. Visualization of vector data can be achieved using the new methods of inline-SVG and the Canvas API. An analysis of the pros and cons of each method is presented. HTML5 introduces a novel WebSocket API which defines a full-duplex communication channel between client and server. This provides improved data communication both in terms of bandwidth utilization and network latency relative to existing push technologies. To demonstrate the effectiveness of HTML5 for vector data delivery a novel selective progressive transmission methodology is implemented using the WebSocket and Canvas API’s

    In this paper we investigate the retrieval performance of monophonic and polyphonic queries made on a polyphonic music database. We extend the n-gram approach for full-music indexing of monophonic music data to polyphonic music using both rhythm and pitch information. We define an experimental framework for a comparative and fault-tolerance study of various n-gramming strategies and encoding levels. For monophonic queries, we focus in particular on query-by-humming systems, and for polyphonic queries on query-by-example. Error models addressed in several studies are surveyed for the fault-tolerance study. Our experiments show that different n-gramming strategies and encoding precision differ widely in their effectiveness.     Novel cell adhesion/migration pathways are predictive markers of HDAC inhibitor resistance in cutaneous T cell lymphoma

    BACKGROUND: Treatment for Cutaneous T Cell Lymphoma (CTCL) is generally not curative. Therefore, selecting therapy that is effective and tolerable is critical to clinical decision-making. Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACi), epigenetic modifier drugs, are commonly used but effective in only ~30% of patients. There are no predictive markers of HDACi response and the CTCL histone acetylation landscape remains unmapped. We sought to identify pre-treatment molecular markers of resistance in CTCL that progressed on HDACi therapy. METHODS: Purified T cells from 39 pre/post-treatment peripheral blood samples and skin biopsies from 20 patients were subjected to RNA-seq and ChIP-seq for histone acetylation marks (H3K14/9 ac, H3K27ac). We correlated significant differences in histone acetylation with gene expression in HDACi-resistant/sensitive CTCL. We extended these findings in additional CTCL patient cohorts (RNA-seq, microarray) and using ELISA in matched CTCL patient plasma. FINDINGS: Resistant CTCL exhibited high levels of histone acetylation, which correlated with increased expression of 338 genes (FDR \u3c 0·05), including some novel to CTCL: BIRC5 (anti-apoptotic); RRM2 (cell cycle); TXNDC5, GSTM1 (redox); and CXCR4, LAIR2 (cell adhesion/migration). Several of these, including LAIR2, were elevated pre-treatment in HDACi-resistant CTCL. In CTCL patient plasma (n = 6), LAIR2 protein was also elevated (p \u3c 0·01) compared to controls. INTERPRETATION: This study is the first to connect genome-wide differences in chromatin acetylation and gene expression to HDACi-resistance in primary CTCL. Our results identify novel markers with high pre-treatment expression, such as LAIR2, as potential prognostic and/or predictors of HDACi-resistance in CTCL.     A Web-GIS Online Vector Data Editing Method Based on Multi-scale Representation Data Structure

    From analysis of the factors affecting the service quality of Web GIS, the key factor in the efficiency of online vector data interactive editing is to control the size of the relevant data set. This paper puts forward an online vector data editing method based on the multi-scale representation data structure DBLG-tree. It designs WindowingQuery for large geometric features. Combined with SimplifyQuery, it can effectively control the vertex scale of the geometric features. At the same time, the sub-feature resulting from WindowingQuery retains the connection with the original feature and can be merged and updated. It provides DownsizeQuery which can directly control the volume of query result from the data set, so as to adapt to the performance of different browsers and mobile devices. Research shows that the execution time of DownsizeQuery under the support of multi-scale representation data structure is stable, and the size of the queried and updated data set is also stable. The upper bounded query time and query results ensure the response time of online interactive visualization and updating of the vector features

    A dataflow platform for applications based on Linked Data

    Modern software applications increasingly benefit from accessing the multifarious and heterogeneous Web of Data, thanks to the use of web APIs and Linked Data principles. In previous work, the authors proposed a platform to develop applications consuming Linked Data in a declarative and modular way. This paper describes in detail the functional language the platform gives access to, which is based on SPARQL (the standard query language for Linked Data) and on the dataflow paradigm. The language features interactive and meta-programming capabilities so that complex modules/applications can be developed. By adopting a declarative style, it favours the development of modules that can be reused in various specific execution context
