A survey of performance enhancement of transmission control protocol (TCP) in wireless ad hoc networks
This Article is provided by the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund - Copyright @ 2011 Springer OpenTransmission control protocol (TCP), which provides reliable end-to-end data delivery, performs well in traditional wired network environments, while in wireless ad hoc networks, it does not perform well. Compared to wired networks, wireless ad hoc networks have some specific characteristics such as node mobility and a shared medium. Owing to these specific characteristics of wireless ad hoc networks, TCP faces particular problems with, for example, route failure, channel contention and high bit error rates. These factors are responsible for the performance degradation of TCP in wireless ad hoc networks. The research community has produced a wide range of proposals to improve the performance of TCP in wireless ad hoc networks. This article presents a survey of these proposals (approaches). A classification of TCP improvement proposals for wireless ad hoc networks is presented, which makes it easy to compare the proposals falling under the same category. Tables which summarize the approaches for quick overview are provided. Possible directions for further improvements in this area are suggested in the conclusions. The aim of the article is to enable the reader to quickly acquire an overview of the state of TCP in wireless ad hoc networks.This study is partly funded by Kohat University of Science & Technology (KUST),

Network-supported layered multicast transport control for streaming media
Multicast is very efficient in distributing large volume of data to multiple receivers over the Internet. Layered multicast helps solve the heterogeneity problem in multicast delivery. Extensive work has been done in the area of layered multicast, for both congestion control and error control. In this paper, we focus on network-supported protocols for streaming media. Most of the existing work solves the congestion control and error control problems separately, and do not give an integrated, efficient solution. In this paper, after reviewing related work, we introduce our proposed protocols, RALM and RALF. The former is a congestion control protocol and the latter is an error control protocol. They work under the same framework and provide an integrated solution. We also extend RALM to RALM-II, which is compatible with TCP traffic. We analyze the complexity of the proposed protocols in the network and investigated their performance through simulations. We show that our solution achieves significant performance gains with reasonable additional complexity. © 2007 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

Among the techniques proposed for B-ISDN transfer mode, ATM concept is considered to be the most promising transfer technique because of its flexibility and efficiency. Getting routers out of the core: Building an optical wide area network with "multipaths"
We propose an all-optical networking solution for a wide area network (WAN)
based on the notion of multipoint-to-multipoint lightpaths that, for short, we
call "multipaths". A multipath concentrates the traffic of a group of source
nodes on a wavelength channel using an adapted MAC protocol and multicasts this
traffic to a group of destination nodes that extract their own data from the
confluent stream. The proposed network can be built using existing components
and appears less complex and more efficient in terms of energy consumption than
alternatives like OPS and OBS. The paper presents the multipath architecture
and compares its energy consumption to that of a classical router-based ISP
network. A flow-aware dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm is proposed and
shown to have excellent performance in terms of throughput and delay
Multimedia congestion control: circuit breakers for unicast RTP sessions
The Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) is widely used in telephony, video conferencing, and telepresence applications. Such applications are often run on best-effort UDP/IP networks. If congestion control is not implemented in these applications, then network congestion can lead to uncontrolled packet loss and a resulting deterioration of the user's multimedia experience. The congestion control algorithm acts as a safety measure by stopping RTP flows from using excessive resources and protecting the network from overload. At the time of this writing, however, while there are several proprietary solutions, there is no standard algorithm for congestion control of interactive RTP flows. This document does not propose a congestion control algorithm. It instead defines a minimal set of RTP circuit breakers: conditions under which an RTP sender needs to stop transmitting media data to protect the network from excessive congestion. It is expected that, in the absence of long-lived excessive congestion, RTP applications running on best-effort IP networks will be able to operate without triggering these circuit breakers. To avoid triggering the RTP circuit breaker, any Standards Track congestion control algorithms defined for RTP will need to operate within the envelope set by these RTP circuit breaker algorithms
Two-Layered Superposition of Broadcast/Multicast and Unicast Signals in Multiuser OFDMA Systems
We study optimal delivery strategies of one common and independent
messages from a source to multiple users in wireless environments. In
particular, two-layered superposition of broadcast/multicast and unicast
signals is considered in a downlink multiuser OFDMA system. In the literature
and industry, the two-layer superposition is often considered as a pragmatic
approach to make a compromise between the simple but suboptimal orthogonal
multiplexing (OM) and the optimal but complex fully-layered non-orthogonal
multiplexing. In this work, we show that only two-layers are necessary to
achieve the maximum sum-rate when the common message has higher priority than
the individual unicast messages, and OM cannot be sum-rate optimal in
general. We develop an algorithm that finds the optimal power allocation over
the two-layers and across the OFDMA radio resources in static channels and a
class of fading channels. Two main use-cases are considered: i) Multicast and
unicast multiplexing when users with uplink capabilities request both
common and independent messages, and ii) broadcast and unicast multiplexing
when the common message targets receive-only devices and users with uplink
capabilities additionally request independent messages. Finally, we develop a
transceiver design for broadcast/multicast and unicast superposition
transmission based on LTE-A-Pro physical layer and show with numerical
evaluations in mobile environments with multipath propagation that the capacity
improvements can be translated into significant practical performance gains
compared to the orthogonal schemes in the 3GPP specifications. We also analyze
the impact of real channel estimation and show that significant gains in terms
of spectral efficiency or coverage area are still available even with
estimation errors and imperfect interference cancellation for the two-layered
superposition system
