The improvement of strategic crops production via a goal programming model with novel multi-interval weights

Nowadays, the need to increase agricultural production has becomes a challenging task for most of the countries. Generally, there are many resource factors which affect the deterioration of production level, such as low water level, desertification, soil salinity, low on capital, lack of equipment, impact of export and import of crops, lack of fertilizers, pesticide, and the ineffective role of agricultural extension services which are significant in this sector. The main objective of this research is to develop fuzzy goal programming (FGP) model to improve agricultural crop production, leading to increased agricultural benefits (more tons of produce per acre) based on the minimization of the main resources (water, fertilizer and pesticide) to determine the weight in the objectives function subject to different constraints (land area, irrigation, labour, fertilizer, pesticide, equipment and seed). FGP and GP were utilized to solve multi-objective decision making problems (MODM). From the results, this research has successfully presented a new alternative method which introduced multi-interval weights in solving a multi-objective FGP and GP model problem in a fuzzy manner, in the current uncertain decision making environment for the agricultural sector. The significance of this research lies in the fact that some of the farming zones have resource limitations while others adversely impact their environment due to misuse of resources. Finally, the model was used to determine the efficiency of each farming zone over the others in terms of resource utilization

Observation of temporary accommodation for construction workers according to the code of practice for temporary construction site workers amenities and accommodation (ms2593:2015) in Johor, Malaysia

The Malaysian government is currently improving the quality of workers temporary accommodation by introducing MS2593:2015 (Code of Practice for Temporary Site Workers Amenities and Accommodation) in 2015. It is in line with the initiative in the Construction Industry Transformation Programme (2016-2020) to increase the quality and well-being of construction workers in Malaysia. Thus, to gauge the current practice of temporary accommodation on complying with the particular guideline, this paper has put forth the observation of such accommodation towards elements in Section 3 within MS2593:2015. A total of seventeen (17) temporary accommodation provided by Grade 6 and Grade 7 contractors in Johor were selected and assessed. The results disclosed that most of the temporary accommodation was not complying with the guideline, where only thirteen (13) out of fifty-eight (58) elements have recorded full compliance (100%), and the lowest compliance percentage (5.9%) are discovered in the Section 3.12 (Signage). In a nutshell, given the significant gap of compliance between current practices of temporary accommodation and MS2593:2015, a holistic initiative need to be in place for the guideline to be worthwhile

Interactive Fuzzy Random Two-level Linear Programming through Fractile Criterion Optimization

    Get PDF
This paper considers two-level linear programming problems involving fuzzy random variables. Having introduced level sets of fuzzy random variables and fuzzy goals of decision makers, following fractile criterion optimization, fuzzy random two-level programming problems are transformed into deterministic ones. Interactive fuzzy programming is presented for deriving a satisfactory solution efficiently with considerations of overall satisfactory balance

A Comprehensive Survey on Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm and Its Applications

Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a heuristic global optimization method, proposed originally by Kennedy and Eberhart in 1995. It is now one of the most commonly used optimization techniques. This survey presented a comprehensive investigation of PSO. On one hand, we provided advances with PSO, including its modifications (including quantum-behaved PSO, bare-bones PSO, chaotic PSO, and fuzzy PSO), population topology (as fully connected, von Neumann, ring, star, random, etc.), hybridization (with genetic algorithm, simulated annealing, Tabu search, artificial immune system, ant colony algorithm, artificial bee colony, differential evolution, harmonic search, and biogeography-based optimization), extensions (to multiobjective, constrained, discrete, and binary optimization), theoretical analysis (parameter selection and tuning, and convergence analysis), and parallel implementation (in multicore, multiprocessor, GPU, and cloud computing forms). On the other hand, we offered a survey on applications of PSO to the following eight fields: electrical and electronic engineering, automation control systems, communication theory, operations research, mechanical engineering, fuel and energy, medicine, chemistry, and biology. It is hoped that this survey would be beneficial for the researchers studying PSO algorithms

Research Agenda on Multiple-Criteria Decision-Making: New Academic Debates in Business and Management

[EN] Systemic disruptions are becoming more continuous, intense, and persistent. Their effects have a severe impact on the economy in volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) environments that are increasingly transversal to productive sectors and activities. Researchers have intensified their academic production of multiple-criteria decision-making (MCDM) in recent years. This article analyzes the research agenda through a systematic review of scientific articles in the Web of Science Core Collection according to the Journal Citation Report (JCR), both in the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) and in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE). According to the selected search criteria, 909 articles on MCDM published between 1979 and 2022 in Web of Science journals in the business and management categories were located. A bibliometric analysis of the main thematic clusters, the international collaboration networks, and the bibliographic coupling of articles was carried out. In addition, the analysis period is divided into two subperiods (1979¿2008 and 2009¿2022), establishing 2008 as the threshold, the year of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), to assess the evolution of the research agenda at the beginning of systemic disruptions. The bibliometric analysis allows the identification of the motor, basic, specialized, and emerging themes of each subperiod. The results show the similarities and differences between the academic debate before and after the GFC. The evidence found allows academics to be guided in their high-impact research in business and management using MCDM methodologies to address contemporary challenges. An important contribution of this study is to detect gaps in the literature, highlighting unclosed gaps and emerging trends in the field of study for journal editors.Castello-Sirvent, F.; Meneses-Eraso, C. Particle Swarm Optimization

    Get PDF
Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a population based stochastic optimization technique influenced by the social behavior of bird flocking or fish schooling.PSO shares many similarities with evolutionary computation techniques such as Genetic Algorithms (GA). The system is initialized with a population of random solutions and searches for optima by updating generations. However, unlike GA, PSO has no evolution operators such as crossover and mutation. In PSO, the potential solutions, called particles, fly through the problem space by following the current optimum particles. This book represents the contributions of the top researchers in this field and will serve as a valuable tool for professionals in this interdisciplinary field

Solving bi-objective bi-item solid transportation problem with fuzzy stochastic constraints involving normal distribution

    Get PDF
In today's competitive world, entrepreneurs cannot argue for transporting a single product. It does not provide much profit to the entrepreneur. Due to this reason, multiple products need to be transported from various origins to destinations through various types of conveyances. Real-world decision-making problems are typically phrased as multi-objective optimization problems because they may be effectively described with numerous competing objectives. Many real-life problems have uncertain objective functions and constraints due to incomplete or uncertain information. Such uncertainties are dealt with in fuzzy/interval/stochastic programming. This study explored a novel integrated model bi-objective bi-item solid transportation problem with fuzzy stochastic inequality constraints following a normal distribution. The entrepreneur's objectives are minimizing the transportation cost and duration of transit while maximizing the profit subject to constraints. The chance-constrained technique is applied to transform the uncertainty problem into its equivalent deterministic problem. The deterministic problem is then solved with the proposed method, namely, the global weighted sum method (GWSM), to find the optimal compromise solution. A numerical example is provided to test the efficacy of the method and then is solved using the Lingo 18.0 software. To highlight the proposed method, comparisons of the solution with the existing solution methods are performed. Finally, to understand the sensitivity of parameters in the proposed model, sensitivity analysis (SA) is conducted
