The proceedings of NASA's second Space Electrochemical Research and Technology Conference are presented. The objectives of the conference were to examine current technologies, research efforts, and advanced ideas, and to identify technical barriers which affect the advancement of electrochemical energy storage systems for space applications. The conference provided a forum for the exchange of ideas and opinions of those actively involved in the field, with the intention of coalescing views and findings into conclusions on progress in the field, prospects for future advances, areas overlooked, and the directions of future efforts. Related overviews were presented in the areas of NASA advanced mission models. Papers were presented and workshops conducted in four technical areas: advanced concepts, hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells and electrolyzers, the nickel electrode, and advanced rechargable batteries

System performance analysis of an isolated microgrid with renewable energy sources and a battery and hydrogen storage system - An evaluation of different storage system configurations

    Get PDF
As more renewable and intermittent power sources are incorporated into the grid, the need for energy storage solutions increases. Implementation of hybrid energy storage solutions (HESS) could enhance system flexibility and contribute to the development of renewable energy systems. The purpose of this master thesis project is to investigate the technical and economic viability of different configurations of battery and hydrogen storage solutions in an isolated microgrid, i.e. local energy system (LES), with renewable power generation. The thesis strives to answer what operation and control strategies are necessary, what sizing methods are suitable and what measurements of performance that could be used to evaluate the system. Simulations are made over a one-year period with a resolution of one hour and use actual data for production and consumption of a microgrid implemented in Simris run by E.ON

Space station systems: A bibliography with indexes (supplement 9)

    Get PDF
This bibliography lists 1,313 reports, articles, and other documents introduced into the NASA scientific and technical information system between January 1, 1989 and June 30, 1989. Its purpose is to provide helpful information to researchers, designers and managers engaged in Space Station technology development and mission design. Coverage includes documents that define major systems and subsystems related to structures and dynamic control, electronics and power supplies, propulsion, and payload integration. In addition, orbital construction methods, servicing and support requirements, procedures and operations, and missions for the current and future Space Station are included

The reference conceptual design of the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) Engineering Test Facility (ETF), a prototype 200 MWe coal-fired electric generating plant designed to demonstrate the commercial feasibility of open cycle MHD, is summarized. Main elements of the design, systems, and plant facilities are illustrated. System design descriptions are included for closed cycle cooling water, industrial gas systems, fuel oil, boiler flue gas, coal management, seed management, slag management, plant industrial waste, fire service water, oxidant supply, MHD power ventilatin

Research and Technology Objectives and Plans Summary (RTOPS)

This publication represents the NASA research and technology program for FY 1985. It is a compilation of the Summary portions of each of the RTOPs (Research and Technology Objectives and Plans) used for management review and control of research currently in progress throughout NASA. The RTOP summary is designed to facilitate communication and coordination among concerned technical personnel in government, in industry, and in universities. The first section containing citations and abstracts of the RTOPs is followed by four indexes: Subject, Technical Monitor, Responsible NASA Organization, and RTOP number
