    Robo-CAMAL : anchoring in a cognitive robot

    Get PDF
The CAMAL architecture (Computational Architectures for Motivation,Affect and Learning) provides an excellent framework within which to explore and investigate issues relevant to cognitive science and artificial intelligence. This thesis describes a small sub element of the CAMAL architecture that has been implemented on a mobile robot. The first area of investigation within this research relates to the anchoring problem. Can the robotic agent generate symbols based on responses within its perceptual systems and can it reason about its environment based on those symbols? Given that the agent can identify changes within its environment, can it then adapt its behaviour and alter its goals to mirror the change in its environment? The second area of interest involves agent learning. The agent has a domain model that details its goals, the actions it can perform and some of the possible environmental states it may encounter. The agent is not provided with the belief-goal-action combinations in order to achieve its goals. The agent is also unaware of the effect its actions have upon its environment. Can the agent experiment with its behaviour to generate its own belief-goal-action combinations that allow it to achieve its goals? A second related problem involves the case where the belief-goal-action combination is pre-programmed. This is when the agent is provided with several different methods with which to achieve a specific goal. Can the agent learn which combination is the best? This thesis will describe the sub-element of the CAMAL architecture that was developed for a robot (robo-CAMAL). It will also demonstrate how robo-CAMAL solves the anchoring problem, and learns how to act and adapt in its environment

The objective of the investigation was to determine the prevalence of hydatidosis in the liver of cattle slaughteredin the municipal bed of the city of Puyo, Pastaza province. The study consisted of post-morten inspectionof the viscera, livers, of all cattle. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to evaluate the trial, usingtables with percentages, graphs, averages, coefficient of variation (CV), standard deviation and using the Chisquaretest. On average, a weight of 13.57 lbs. Of seized livers was obtained with a standard deviation of 11.67and a coefficient of variation of 85.99%. There is variability in the data, this is due to the low frequency ofoccurrence of the disease in slaughtered cattle, of 0.05 and 7 degrees freedom, a referential value of x2t (tabulated)= 14.06. The livers examined during the post mortem inspection, in the eight weeks of control was 108.6 lb.,with an average of 12 pounds per liver, the economic losses, in the total confiscated livers accounted for USD217.20, with an average of USD 24.13 for each liver contaminated.

Uses Made of Computer Algebra in Physics

Computer algebra is a tool building activity. This paper is a review of acceptance of this tool by physicists and theoretical chemists during the period from the EUROSAM-79 survey to the Spring of 1988, as reflected by the literature which quotes computer algebra. After considering the traditional areas of application; celestial mechanics, relativity and quantum mechanics, we extend our examination to other areas of physics which would appear, from the literature, to be using computer algebra efficiently: fluid mechanics, plasma physics, optics, perturbation technology, continuum mechanics, numerical analysis for physics, mechanics, non-linear evolution equations, theoretical chemistry and other applications

Divorce, Except It Be for Fornication. Is there anything besides death that severs the marriage bond? In the opinion of the Pharisees there were quite a number of reasons for which a man might put away his wife. In answer to Christ’s apodictic statement they ask: Why did Moses, then, command to give a writing of divorcement and to put her away? How dare you, they mean to say, put yourself in opposition to Moses? Are you more than Moses? Christ answers: Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, suffered you to put away your wives; but from the beginning it was not so, Matt. 19, 8. Who was right? Did Moses command, or did he merely suffer, permit? As always, Jesus is correct, as a glance at Deut. 24, 1-4, the Scripture passage referred to, will show

    The Costs of Motive-Centered Inquiry

    Get PDF
This commentary addresses why a motive-centered theory, such as the one proposed by Professor Simon, will damage the cause of racial justice in this country if the theory became entrenched as constitutional doctrine. The author claims that such a theory places a heavy burden on persuasion on the wrong side of the dispute and forces litigants in a race case into name-calling on one side and self-righteousness on the other side
