Gravitational bending of light by planetary multipoles and its measurement with microarcsecond astronomical interferometers
General relativistic deflection of light by mass, dipole, and quadrupole
moments of gravitational field of a moving massive planet in the Solar system
is derived. All terms of order 1 microarcsecond are taken into account,
parametrized, and classified in accordance with their physical origin. We
calculate the instantaneous patterns of the light-ray deflections caused by the
monopole, the dipole and the quadrupole moments, and derive equations
describing apparent motion of the deflected position of the star in the sky
plane as the impact parameter of the light ray with respect to the planet
changes due to its orbital motion. The present paper gives the physical
interpretation of the observed light-ray deflections and discusses the
observational capabilities of the near-future optical (SIM) and radio (SKA)
interferometers for detecting the Doppler modulation of the radial deflection,
and the dipolar and quadrupolar light-ray bendings by the Jupiter and the
Saturn.Comment: 33 pages, 10 figures, accepted to Phys. Rev.
Non-linear optical susceptibilities, Raman efficiencies and electrooptic tensors from first-principles density functional perturbation theory
The non-linear response of infinite periodic solids to homogenous electric
fields and collective atomic displacements is discussed in the framework of
density functional perturbation theory. The approach is based on the 2n + 1
theorem applied to an electric-field-dependent energy functional. We report the
expressions for the calculation of the non-linear optical susceptibilities,
Raman scattering efficiencies and electrooptic coefficients. Different
formulations of third-order energy derivatives are examined and their
convergence with respect to the k-point sampling is discussed. We apply our
method to a few simple cases and compare our results to those obtained with
distinct techniques. Finally, we discuss the effect of a scissors correction on
the EO coefficients and non-linear optical susceptibilities
Maximally-localized generalized Wannier functions for composite energy bands
We discuss a method for determining the optimally-localized set of
generalized Wannier functions associated with a set of Bloch bands in a
crystalline solid. By ``generalized Wannier functions'' we mean a set of
localized orthonormal orbitals spanning the same space as the specified set of
Bloch bands. Although we minimize a functional that represents the total spread
sum_n [ _n - _n^2 ] of the Wannier functions in real space, our method
proceeds directly from the Bloch functions as represented on a mesh of
k-points, and carries out the minimization in a space of unitary matrices
U_mn^k describing the rotation among the Bloch bands at each k-point. The
method is thus suitable for use in connection with conventional
electronic-structure codes. The procedure also returns the total electric
polarization as well as the location of each Wannier center. Sample results for
Si, GaAs, molecular C2H4, and LiCl will be presented.Comment: 22 pages, two-column style with 4 postscript figures embedded. Uses
