    Thermal System Oriented Simulation of Aircraft Electrical Environmental Control Systems Including its Electric Coupling

    A flexible numerical platform based on libraries has been developed within the Dymola/Modelica framework to simulate Environmental Control Systems (ECS). The goal was to build up a flexible tool to analyse complex systems including their thermal and electrical perimeters at both steady and transient conditions focusing on three key characteristics: numerical robustness, optimal time consumption, and high accuracy. This document aims to underline both the most relevant features of the numerical tool and the main challenges addressed during its development.     Improving the Accuracy and Scope of Control-Oriented Vapor Compression Cycle System Models

    The benefits of applying advanced control techniques to vapor compression cycle systems are well know. The main advantages are improved performance and efficiency, the achievement of which brings both economic and environmental gains. One of the most significant hurdles to the practical application of advanced control techniques is the development of a dynamic system level model that is both accurate and mathematically tractable. Previous efforts in control-oriented modeling have produced a class of heat exchanger models known as moving-boundary models. When combined with mass flow device models, these moving-boundary models provide an excellent framework for both dynamic analysis and control design. This thesis contains the results of research carried out to increase both the accuracy and scope of these system level models. The improvements to the existing vapor compression cycle models are carried out through the application of various modeling techniques, some static and some dynamic, some data-based and some physics-based. Semiempirical static modeling techniques are used to increase the accuracy of both heat exchangers and mass flow devices over a wide range of operating conditions. Dynamic modeling techniques are used both to derive new component models that are essential to the simulation of very common vapor compression cycle systems and to improve the accuracy of the existing compressor model. A new heat exchanger model that accounts for the effects of moisture in the air is presented. All of these model improvements and additions are unified to create a simple but accurate system level model with a wide range of application. Extensive model validation results are presented, providing both qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the new models and model improvements.Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Project 17

    Control-oriented modeling, validation, and analysis of a natural gas engine architecture

    In order to improve performance and meet increasingly tight emissions regulations, engine manufacturers must improve algorithms used to control the engine. One possible strategy is to utilize centralized control algorithms that take into account the coupled interactions between inputs and outputs. Implementing a centralized control strategy often requires some kind of dynamic model of the system, which is a primary motivation for modeling efforts in this thesis. In a methodical fashion, this thesis derives a control model for a natural gas engine architecture and validates this control model against reference data in simulation. Additionally, this thesis performs control-oriented analysis on a state-space model provided by Caterpillar to determine the engine’s suitability to decentralized control. Based on the results of the control-oriented analysis, the thesis demonstrates how a decentralized control framework can be implemented. The first study declares a set of seven state variables that characterize the operation of the engine. The engine of interest runs on natural gas and is used in power generation applications. Additionally, this study models all mass flow rates and power terms as functions of the selected state variables. These models are then validated against truth-reference data. This study also explicitly states the assumptions and simplifications that correspond to each of the models. The second study derives dynamic equations for each of the seven state variables via a first-principles approach. The dynamic state equations contain expressions for mass flow rates and power that were modeled in the first study. This study then numerically validates the entire state-space model by exercising control inputs from reference data on it. Together, the seven state equations effectively serve as a control model that can be used for controller synthesis. The goal of the first two studies is to demonstrate a procedure for obtaining a control model for an engine architecture, not to obtain a high-fidelity simulation model. The third study demonstrates control-oriented analysis on a state-space model provided by Caterpillar. The relative gain array (RGA) is used to show that the system is well-suited is for decentralized control. This study implements a decentralized control structure on the state-space model provided by Caterpillar and validates, in simulation, its ability to achieve reference tracking for desired outputs

    Active stabilization to prevent surge in centrifugal compression systems

    This report documents an experimental and analytical study of the active stabilization of surge in a centrifugal engine. The aims of the research were to extend the operating range of a compressor as far as possible and to establish the theoretical framework for the active stabilization of surge from both an aerodynamic stability and a control theoretic perspective. In particular, much attention was paid to understanding the physical limitations of active stabilization and how they are influenced by control system design parameters. Previously developed linear models of actively stabilized compressors were extended to include such nonlinear phenomena as bounded actuation, bandwidth limits, and robustness criteria. This model was then used to systematically quantify the influence of sensor-actuator selection on system performance. Five different actuation schemes were considered along with four different sensors. Sensor-actuator choice was shown to have a profound effect on the performance of the stabilized compressor. The optimum choice was not unique, but rather shown to be a strong function of some of the non-dimensional parameters which characterize the compression system dynamics. Specifically, the utility of the concepts were shown to depend on the system compliance to inertia ratio ('B' parameter) and the local slope of the compressor speedline. In general, the most effective arrangements are ones in which the actuator is most closely coupled to the compressor, such as a close-coupled bleed valve inlet jet, rather than elsewhere in the flow train, such as a fuel flow modulator. The analytical model was used to explore the influence of control system bandwidth on control effectiveness. The relevant reference frequency was shown to be the compression system's Helmholtz frequency rather than the surge frequency. The analysis shows that control bandwidths of three to ten times the Helmholtz frequency are required for larger increases in the compressor flow range. This has important implications for implementation in gas turbine engines since the Helmholtz frequencies can be over 100 Hz, making actuator design extremely challenging

    On the thermal dynamic behaviour of the helium-cooled DEMO fusion reactor

    The EU-DEMO conceptual design is being conducted among research institutions and universities from 26 countries of European Union, Switzerland and Ukraine. Its mission is to realise electricity from nuclear fusion reaction by 2050. As DEMO has been conceived to deliver net electricity to the grid, the choice of the Breeding Blanket (BB) coolant plays a pivotal role in the reactor design having a strong influence on plant operation, safety and maintenance. In particular, due to the pulsed nature of the heat source, the Primary Heat Transfer System (PHTS) becomes a very important actor of the Balance of Plant (BoP) together with the Power Conversion System (PCS). Moreover, aiming to mitigate the potential negative impact of plasma pulsing on BoP equipment, for the DEMO plant is also being investigated a "heat transfer chain" option which envisages an Intermediate Heat Transfer System (IHTS) equipped with an Energy Storage System (ESS) between PHTS and PCS. Within this framework, a preliminary study has been carried out to analyse the thermal dynamic behaviour of the IHTS system for the Helium-Cooled Pebble Bed (HCPB) BB concept during pulse/dwell transition which should be still considered as the normal operating mode of a fusion power plant. Starting from preliminary thermal-hydraulic calculations made in order to size the main BoP components, the global performances of DEMO BoP have been quantitatively assessed focusing the attention on the attitude of the whole IHTS to smooth the sudden power variations which come from the plasma. The paper describes criteria and rationale followed to develop a numerical model which manages to simulate simple transient scenarios of DEMO BoP. Results of numerical simulations are presented and critically discussed in order to point out the main issues that DEMO BoP has to overcome to achieve a viable electricity power output

    Model Predictive Control of Modern High-Degree-of-Freedom Turbocharged Spark Ignited Engines with External Cooled EGR

    The efficiency of modern downsized SI engines has been significantly improved using cooled Low-Pressure Exhaust Gas Recirculation, Turbocharging and Variable Valve Timing actuation. Control of these sub-systems is challenging due to their inter-dependence and the increased number of actuators associated with engine control. Much research has been done on developing algorithms which improve the transient turbocharged engine response without affecting fuel-economy. With the addition of newer technologies like external cooled EGR the control complexity has increased exponentially. This research proposes a methodology to evaluate the ability of a Model Predictive Controller to coordinate engine and air-path actuators simultaneously. A semi-physical engine model has been developed and analyzed for non-linearity. The computational burden of implementing this control law has been addressed by utilizing a semi-physical engine system model and basic analytical differentiation. The resulting linearization process requires less than 10% of the time required for widely used numerical linearization approach. Based on this approach a Nonlinear MPC-Quadratic Program has been formulated and solved with preliminary validation applied to a 1D Engine model followed by implementation on an experimental rapid prototyping control system. The MPC based control demonstrates the ability to co-ordinate different engine and air-path actuators simultaneously for torque-tracking with minimal constraint violation.
