A pervasive assistant for nursing and doctoral staff

This work was carried out within the PINATA project, funded by the Malta Council for Science and Technology (http://www.mcst.org.mt) and done in collaboration with St.James Hospital Malta (http://stjameshospital.com). The project was also supported by the Ministry of Technology (http://www.miti.gov.mt).The goal of health-care institutions is to provide patient- centric health care services. Unfortunately, this goal is frequently undermined due to human-related aspects. The PervasIve Nursing And docToral Assistant (PINATA) provides a patient-centric system powered with Ambience Intelligence techniques and Semantic Web technologies. Through PINATA, the movement of patients and medical staff is tracked via RFID sensors while an automated camera system monitors the interaction of people within their environment. The system reacts to particular situations autonomously by directing medical staff towards emergencies in a timely manner and providing them with just the information they require on their handheld devices. This ensures that patients are given the best care possible on a 24/7 basis especially when the medical staff is not around.peer-reviewe

Professorial roles: a study of the professorial populations within nursing and midwifery, social work and allied health professions

The professorial populations in nursing/midwifery, social work and allied health are relatively new in academia compared to longer established professions such as medicine and dentistry. Less is known about the roles, career pathways, characteristics and career aspirations of the professoriate within these emerging professions. A survey was undertaken from sample populations in each of the three professorial groups in order to obtain qualitative and quantitative data on professorial roles and activities, career pathway information and support mechanisms for professorial positions. This paper discusses the findings of the survey which relate specifically to professorial roles and activities and whether the identified roles reflect the professorial activities proposed by the National Conference of University Professors (NCUP) Other aspects of this survey including career pathways, findings relating to gender and support mechanisms will form the basis of future papers. Investing in People

Foundations have long created programs to provide grants to individuals—most often in the form of fellowships, scholarships, and prizes. Several of these programs have become so prominent that they are now institutions in and of themselves. Consider just a few examples: the Pulitzer Prize, Fulbright Program, and MacArthur "genius" awards. Governments, as well as foundations large and small, fund individual support programs.The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has generously allowed the authors of this report to examine its portfolio of individual support programs to explore what the authors believe are some of the strategic fundamentals underlying this type of programming that could be applied to future individual support grantmaking. The purpose of this study is to inform those interested in individual support programs about not only some of the strategy considerations underlying this type of grantmaking but what these programs can be expected to achieve—and under what circumstances.
