Enriching ontological user profiles with tagging history for multi-domain recommendations
Many advanced recommendation frameworks employ ontologies of various complexities to model individuals and items, providing a mechanism for the expression of user interests and the representation of item attributes. As a result, complex matching techniques can be applied to support individuals in the discovery of items according to explicit and implicit user preferences. Recently, the rapid adoption of Web2.0, and the proliferation of social networking sites, has resulted in more and more users providing an increasing amount of information about themselves that could be exploited for recommendation purposes. However, the unification of personal information with ontologies using the contemporary knowledge representation methods often associated with Web2.0 applications, such as community tagging, is a non-trivial task. In this paper, we propose a method for the unification of tags with ontologies by grounding tags to a shared representation in the form of Wordnet and Wikipedia. We incorporate individuals' tagging history into their ontological profiles by matching tags with ontology concepts. This approach is preliminary evaluated by extending an existing news recommendation system with user tagging histories harvested from popular social networking sites
Preference Networks: Probabilistic Models for Recommendation Systems
Recommender systems are important to help users select relevant and
personalised information over massive amounts of data available. We propose an
unified framework called Preference Network (PN) that jointly models various
types of domain knowledge for the task of recommendation. The PN is a
probabilistic model that systematically combines both content-based filtering
and collaborative filtering into a single conditional Markov random field. Once
estimated, it serves as a probabilistic database that supports various useful
queries such as rating prediction and top- recommendation. To handle the
challenging problem of learning large networks of users and items, we employ a
simple but effective pseudo-likelihood with regularisation. Experiments on the

Focussed palmtop information access combining starfield displays and profile-based recommendations
This paper presents two palmtop applications: Taeneb CityGuide and Taeneb ConferenceGuide. Both applications are centred around Starfield displays on palmtop computers - this provides fast, dynamic access to information on a small platform. The paper describes the applications focussing on this novel palmtop information access method and on the user-profiling aspect of the CityGuide, where restaurants are recommended to users based on both the match of restaurant type to the users' observed previous interactions and the rating given by reviewers with similar observed preferences
Second Screen User Profiling and Multi-level Smart Recommendations in the context of Social TVs
In the context of Social TV, the increasing popularity of first and second
screen users, interacting and posting content online, illustrates new business
opportunities and related technical challenges, in order to enrich user
experience on such environments. SAM (Socializing Around Media) project uses
Social Media-connected infrastructure to deal with the aforementioned
challenges, providing intelligent user context management models and mechanisms
capturing social patterns, to apply collaborative filtering techniques and
personalized recommendations towards this direction. This paper presents the
Context Management mechanism of SAM, running in a Social TV environment to
provide smart recommendations for first and second screen content. Work
presented is evaluated using real movie rating dataset found online, to

Travel recommendations in a mobile tourist information system
An advanced mobile tourist information system delivers information about sights and events on a tourists travel route. The system should be personalized in its interaction with the tourist. Data that can be used for personalization are: the tourists interest profile, an analysis of their travel history, and the tourists feedback about sights. Existing mobile information systems for tourists do not tailor their information delivery to the tourists interests. In this paper, we propose the use of personalised recommendations that consider all of the personal information a tourist provides. We adopt and modify techniques from recommended systems to the new application area of mobile tourist information. We propose a number of methods for personalised recommendations; and select a subset of these for implementation. On Recommendation of Learning Objects using Felder-Silverman Learning Style Model

The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.The e-learning recommender system in learning institutions is increasingly becoming the preferred mode of delivery, as it enables learning anytime, anywhere. However, delivering personalised course learning objects based on learner preferences is still a challenge. Current mainstream recommendation algorithms, such as the Collaborative Filtering (CF) and Content-Based Filtering (CBF), deal with only two types of entities, namely users and items with their ratings. However, these methods do not pay attention to student preferences, such as learning styles, which are especially important for the accuracy of course learning objects prediction or recommendation. Moreover, several recommendation techniques experience cold-start and rating sparsity problems. To address the challenge of improving the quality of recommender systems, in this paper a novel recommender algorithm for machine learning is proposed, which combines students actual rating with their learning styles to recommend Top-N course learning objects (LOs). Various recommendation techniques are considered in an experimental study investigating the best technique to use in predicting student ratings for e-learning recommender systems. We use the Felder-Silverman Learning Styles Model (FSLSM) to represent both the student learning styles and the learning object profiles. The predicted rating has been compared with the actual student rating. This approach has been experimented on 80 students for an online course created in the MOODLE Learning Management System, while the evaluation of the experiments has been performed with the Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). The results of the experiment verify that the proposed approach provides a higher prediction rating and significantly increases the accuracy of the recommendation
Recommender systems and their ethical challenges
This article presents the first, systematic analysis of the ethical challenges posed by recommender systems through a literature review. The article identifies six areas of concern, and maps them onto a proposed taxonomy of different kinds of ethical impact. The analysis uncovers a gap in the literature: currently user-centred approaches do not consider the interests of a variety of other stakeholders—as opposed to just the receivers of a recommendation—in assessing the ethical impacts of a recommender system
Improving Recommendation Quality by Merging Collaborative Filtering and Social Relationships

by Collaborative Filtering Systems (CFSs). Traditional CFSs\ud
based on Matrix Factorization operate on the ratings provided\ud
by users and have been recently extended to incorporate\ud
demographic aspects such as age and gender. In this paper we\ud
propose to merge CF techniques based on Matrix Factorization\ud
and information regarding social friendships in order to\ud
provide users with more accurate suggestions and rankings\ud
