A Perception-based Color Space for Illumination-invariant Image Processing
Motivated by perceptual principles, we derive a new color space in which the associated metric approximates perceived distances and color displacements capture relationships that are robust to spectral changes in illumination. The resulting color space can be used with existing image processing algorithms with little or no change to the methods.Engineering and Applied Science
A Neural Network Architecture for Figure-ground Separation of Connected Scenic Figures
A neural network model, called an FBF network, is proposed for automatic parallel separation of multiple image figures from each other and their backgrounds in noisy grayscale or multi-colored images. The figures can then be processed in parallel by an array of self-organizing Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) neural networks for automatic target recognition. An FBF network can automatically separate the disconnected but interleaved spirals that Minsky and Papert introduced in their book Perceptrons. The network's design also clarifies why humans cannot rapidly separate interleaved spirals, yet can rapidly detect conjunctions of disparity and color, or of disparity and motion, that distinguish target figures from surrounding distractors. Figure-ground separation is accomplished by iterating operations of a Feature Contour System (FCS) and a Boundary Contour System (BCS) in the order FCS-BCS-FCS, hence the term FBF, that have been derived from an analysis of biological vision. The FCS operations include the use of nonlinear shunting networks to compensate for variable illumination and nonlinear diffusion networks to control filling-in. A key new feature of an FBF network is the use of filling-in for figure-ground separation. The BCS operations include oriented filters joined to competitive and cooperative interactions designed to detect, regularize, and complete boundaries in up to 50 percent noise, while suppressing the noise. Person Re-identification by Local Maximal Occurrence Representation and Metric Learning
Person re-identification is an important technique towards automatic search
of a person's presence in a surveillance video. Two fundamental problems are
critical for person re-identification, feature representation and metric
learning. An effective feature representation should be robust to illumination
and viewpoint changes, and a discriminant metric should be learned to match
various person images. In this paper, we propose an effective feature
representation called Local Maximal Occurrence (LOMO), and a subspace and
metric learning method called Cross-view Quadratic Discriminant Analysis
(XQDA). The LOMO feature analyzes the horizontal occurrence of local features,
and maximizes the occurrence to make a stable representation against viewpoint
changes. Besides, to handle illumination variations, we apply the Retinex
transform and a scale invariant texture operator. To learn a discriminant
metric, we propose to learn a discriminant low dimensional subspace by
cross-view quadratic discriminant analysis, and simultaneously, a QDA metric is
learned on the derived subspace. We also present a practical computation method
for XQDA, as well as its regularization. Experiments on four challenging person
re-identification databases, VIPeR, QMUL GRID, CUHK Campus, and CUHK03, show
that the proposed method improves the state-of-the-art rank-1 identification
rates by 2.2%, 4.88%, 28.91%, and 31.55% on the four databases, respectively.Comment: This paper has been accepted by CVPR 2015. For source codes and

Review of Person Re-identification Techniques
Person re-identification across different surveillance cameras with disjoint
fields of view has become one of the most interesting and challenging subjects
in the area of intelligent video surveillance. Although several methods have
been developed and proposed, certain limitations and unresolved issues remain.
In all of the existing re-identification approaches, feature vectors are
extracted from segmented still images or video frames. Different similarity or
dissimilarity measures have been applied to these vectors. Some methods have
used simple constant metrics, whereas others have utilised models to obtain
optimised metrics. Some have created models based on local colour or texture
information, and others have built models based on the gait of people. In
general, the main objective of all these approaches is to achieve a
higher-accuracy rate and lowercomputational costs. This study summarises
several developments in recent literature and discusses the various available
methods used in person re-identification. Specifically, their advantages and

Addressing Challenging Place Recognition Tasks using Generative Adversarial Networks
Place recognition is an essential component of Simultaneous Localization And
Mapping (SLAM). Under severe appearance change, reliable place recognition is a
difficult perception task since the same place is perceptually very different
in the morning, at night, or over different seasons. This work addresses place
recognition as a domain translation task. Using a pair of coupled Generative
Adversarial Networks (GANs), we show that it is possible to generate the
appearance of one domain (such as summer) from another (such as winter) without
requiring image-to-image correspondences across the domains. Mapping between
domains is learned from sets of images in each domain without knowing the
instance-to-instance correspondence by enforcing a cyclic consistency
constraint. In the process, meaningful feature spaces are learned for each
domain, the distances in which can be used for the task of place recognition.
Experiments show that learned features correspond to visual similarity and can
