Local feature weighting in nearest prototype classification
The distance metric is the corner stone of nearest neighbor (NN)-based methods, and therefore, of nearest prototype (NP) algorithms. That is because they classify depending on the similarity of the data. When the data is characterized by a set of features which may contribute to the classification task in different levels, feature weighting or selection is required, sometimes in a local sense. However, local weighting is typically restricted to NN approaches. In this paper, we introduce local feature weighting (LFW) in NP classification. LFW provides each prototype its own weight vector, opposite to typical global weighting methods found in the NP literature, where all the prototypes share the same one. Providing each prototype its own weight vector has a novel effect in the borders of the Voronoi regions generated: They become nonlinear. We have integrated LFW with a previously developed evolutionary nearest prototype classifier (ENPC). The experiments performed both in artificial and real data sets demonstrate that the resulting algorithm that we call LFW in nearest prototype classification (LFW-NPC) avoids overfitting on training data in domains where the features may have different contribution to the classification task in different areas of the feature space. Comparison of Classifiers for Radar Emitter Type Identification
ARTMAP neural network classifiers are considered for the identification of radar emitter types from their waveform parameters. These classifiers can represent radar emitter type classes with one or more prototypes, perform on-line incremental learning to account for novelty encountered in the field, and process radar pulse streams at high speed, making them attractive for real-time applications such as electronic support measures (ESM). The performance of four ARTMAP variants- ARTMAP (Stage 1), ARTMAP-IC, fuzzy ARTMAP and Gaussian ARTMAP - is assessed with radar data gathered in the field. The k nearest neighbor (kNN) and radial basis function (RDF) classifiers are used for reference. Simulation results indicate that fuzzy ARTMAP and Gaussian ARTMAP achieve an average classification rate consistently higher than that of the other ARTMAP classifers and comparable to that of kNN and RBF. ART-EMAP, ARTMAP-IC and fuzzy ARTMAP require fewer training epochs than Gaussian ARTMAP and RBF, and substantially fewer prototype vectors (thus, smaller physical memory requirements and faster fielded performance) than Gaussian ARTMAP, RBF and kNN. Overall, fuzzy ART MAP performs at least as well as the other classifiers in both accuracy and computational complexity, and better than each of them in at least one of these aspects of performance. Scalable approximate FRNN-OWA classification
Fuzzy Rough Nearest Neighbour classification with Ordered Weighted Averaging operators (FRNN-OWA) is an algorithm that classifies unseen instances according to their membership in the fuzzy upper and lower approximations of the decision classes. Previous research has shown that the use of OWA operators increases the robustness of this model. However, calculating membership in an approximation requires a nearest neighbour search. In practice, the query time complexity of exact nearest neighbour search algorithms in more than a handful of dimensions is near-linear, which limits the scalability of FRNN-OWA. Therefore, we propose approximate FRNN-OWA, a modified model that calculates upper and lower approximations of decision classes using the approximate nearest neighbours returned by Hierarchical Navigable Small Worlds (HNSW), a recent approximative nearest neighbour search algorithm with logarithmic query time complexity at constant near-100% accuracy. We demonstrate that approximate FRNN-OWA is sufficiently robust to match the classification accuracy of exact FRNN-OWA while scaling much more efficiently. We test four parameter configurations of HNSW, and evaluate their performance by measuring classification accuracy and construction and query times for samples of various sizes from three large datasets. We find that with two of the parameter configurations, approximate FRNN-OWA achieves near-identical accuracy to exact FRNN-OWA for most sample sizes within query times that are up to several orders of magnitude faster
One-class classifiers based on entropic spanning graphs
One-class classifiers offer valuable tools to assess the presence of outliers
in data. In this paper, we propose a design methodology for one-class
classifiers based on entropic spanning graphs. Our approach takes into account
the possibility to process also non-numeric data by means of an embedding
procedure. The spanning graph is learned on the embedded input data and the
outcoming partition of vertices defines the classifier. The final partition is
derived by exploiting a criterion based on mutual information minimization.
Here, we compute the mutual information by using a convenient formulation
provided in terms of the -Jensen difference. Once training is
completed, in order to associate a confidence level with the classifier
decision, a graph-based fuzzy model is constructed. The fuzzification process
is based only on topological information of the vertices of the entropic
spanning graph. As such, the proposed one-class classifier is suitable also for
data characterized by complex geometric structures. We provide experiments on
well-known benchmarks containing both feature vectors and labeled graphs. In
addition, we apply the method to the protein solubility recognition problem by
considering several representations for the input samples. Experimental results
demonstrate the effectiveness and versatility of the proposed method with

One-Class Classification: Taxonomy of Study and Review of Techniques
One-class classification (OCC) algorithms aim to build classification models
when the negative class is either absent, poorly sampled or not well defined.
This unique situation constrains the learning of efficient classifiers by
defining class boundary just with the knowledge of positive class. The OCC
problem has been considered and applied under many research themes, such as
outlier/novelty detection and concept learning. In this paper we present a
unified view of the general problem of OCC by presenting a taxonomy of study
for OCC problems, which is based on the availability of training data,
algorithms used and the application domains applied. We further delve into each
of the categories of the proposed taxonomy and present a comprehensive
literature review of the OCC algorithms, techniques and methodologies with a
focus on their significance, limitations and applications. We conclude our
paper by discussing some open research problems in the field of OCC and present
