    New solution approaches for the quadratic assignment problem

    MSc., Faculty of Science, University of the Witwatersrand, 2011A vast array of important practical problems, in many di erent elds, can be modelled and solved as quadratic assignment problems (QAP). This includes problems such as university campus layout, forest management, assignment of runners in a relay team, parallel and distributed computing, etc. The QAP is a di cult combinatorial optimization problem and solving QAP instances of size greater than 22 within a reasonable amount of time is still challenging. In this dissertation, we propose two new solution approaches to the QAP, namely, a Branch-and-Bound method and a discrete dynamic convexized method. These two methods use the standard quadratic integer programming formulation of the QAP. We also present a lower bounding technique for the QAP based on an equivalent separable convex quadratic formulation of the QAP. We nally develop two di erent new techniques for nding initial strictly feasible points for the interior point method used in the Branch-and-Bound method. Numerical results are presented showing the robustness of both methods

    Exploiting Chordality in Optimization Algorithms for Model Predictive Control

    In this chapter we show that chordal structure can be used to devise efficient optimization methods for many common model predictive control problems. The chordal structure is used both for computing search directions efficiently as well as for distributing all the other computations in an interior-point method for solving the problem. The chordal structure can stem both from the sequential nature of the problem as well as from distributed formulations of the problem related to scenario trees or other formulations.     Time and nodal decomposition with implicit non-anticipativity constraints in dynamic portfolio optimization

    We propose a decomposition method for the solution of a dynamic portfolio optimization problem which fits the formulation of a multistage stochastic programming problem. The method allows to obtain time and nodal decomposition of the problem in its arborescent formulation applying a discrete version of Pontryagin Maximum Principle. The solution of the decomposed problems is coordinated through a fixed- point weighted iterative scheme. The introduction of an optimization step in the choice of the weights at each iteration allows to solve the original problem in a very efficient way.Stochastic programming, Discrete time optimal control problem, Iterative scheme, Portfolio optimization

    Computationally Efficient Trajectory Optimization for Linear Control Systems with Input and State Constraints

    This paper presents a trajectory generation method that optimizes a quadratic cost functional with respect to linear system dynamics and to linear input and state constraints. The method is based on continuous-time flatness-based trajectory generation, and the outputs are parameterized using a polynomial basis. A method to parameterize the constraints is introduced using a result on polynomial nonpositivity. The resulting parameterized problem remains linear-quadratic and can be solved using quadratic programming. The problem can be further simplified to a linear programming problem by linearization around the unconstrained optimum. The method promises to be computationally efficient for constrained systems with a high optimization horizon.
