    An Extended Flexible Job Shop Scheduling Problem with Parallel Operations

    Traditional planning and scheduling techniques still hold important roles in modern smart scheduling systems. Realistic features present in modern manufacturing systems need to be incorporated into these techniques. Flexible job-shop scheduling problem (FJSP) is one of the most challenging combinatorial optimization problems. FJSP is an extension of the classical job shop scheduling problem where an operation can be processed by several different machines. In this paper, we consider the FJSP with parallel operations (EFJSP) and we propose and compare a discrete firefly algorithm (FA) and a genetic algorithm (GA) for the problem. Several FJSP and EFJSP instances were used to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms. Comparisons among our methods and state-of-the-art algorithms are also provided. The experimental results demonstrate that the FA and GA achieved improvements in terms of efficiency and efficacy. Solutions obtained by both algorithms are comparable to those obtained by algorithms with local search. In addition, based on our initial experiments, results show that the proposed discrete firefly algorithm is feasible, more effective and efficient than our proposed genetic algorithm for the considered problem

    A Genetic-Algorithm-Based Approach for Optimizing Tool Utilization and Makespan in FMS Scheduling

    This paper proposes a genetic algorithm approach to solve the identical parallel machines problem with tooling constraints in job shop flexible manufacturing systems (JS-FMSs) with the consideration of tool wear. The approach takes into account the residual useful life of tools and allocates a set of jobs with specific processing times and tooling requirements on identical parallel machines. Two metrics are introduced to evaluate the scheduling decisions and optimize the scheduling process, with the competitive goal of maximizing tool utilization and minimizing production makespan. The proposed approach searches for a set of optimal solutions on the Pareto front that offers the best possible balance between these two objectives, achieving optimal local performance in terms of both makespan and tool utilization. The approach is implemented with a customized genetic algorithm and validated on a real case study from a company operating in the aerospace sector, which confirms its effectiveness in increasing tool utilization and reducing the makespan. The results show that the proposed approach has significant practical implications for the manufacturing industry, particularly in the production of high-value materials such as those in the aerospace sector that require costly tools. This paper contributes to the operational research community by providing advanced scheduling algorithms that can optimize both the makespan and the tool utilization concurrently, improving production efficiency and maintaining competitiveness in the manufacturing industry

    Multiprocessor task scheduling in multistage hyrid flowshops: a genetic algorithm approach

    This paper considers multiprocessor task scheduling in a multistage hybrid flow-shop environment. The objective is to minimize the make-span, that is, the completion time of all the tasks in the last stage. This problem is of practical interest in the textile and process industries. A genetic algorithm (GA) is developed to solve the problem. The GA is tested against a lower bound from the literature as well as against heuristic rules on a test bed comprising 400 problems with up to 100 jobs, 10 stages, and with up to five processors on each stage. For small problems, solutions found by the GA are compared to optimal solutions, which are obtained by total enumeration. For larger problems, optimum solutions are estimated by a statistical prediction technique. Computational results show that the GA is both effective and efficient for the current problem.     Climbing depth-bounded adjacent discrepancy search for solving hybrid flow shop scheduling problems with multiprocessor tasks

    This paper considers multiprocessor task scheduling in a multistage hybrid flow-shop environment. The problem even in its simplest form is NP-hard in the strong sense. The great deal of interest for this problem, besides its theoretical complexity, is animated by needs of various manufacturing and computing systems. We propose a new approach based on limited discrepancy search to solve the problem. Our method is tested with reference to a proposed lower bound as well as the best-known solutions in literature. Computational results show that the developed approach is efficient in particular for large-size problems

    Design and Analysis of an Estimation of Distribution Approximation Algorithm for Single Machine Scheduling in Uncertain Environments

    In the current work we introduce a novel estimation of distribution algorithm to tackle a hard combinatorial optimization problem, namely the single-machine scheduling problem, with uncertain delivery times. The majority of the existing research coping with optimization problems in uncertain environment aims at finding a single sufficiently robust solution so that random noise and unpredictable circumstances would have the least possible detrimental effect on the quality of the solution. The measures of robustness are usually based on various kinds of empirically designed averaging techniques. In contrast to the previous work, our algorithm aims at finding a collection of robust schedules that allow for a more informative decision making. The notion of robustness is measured quantitatively in terms of the classical mathematical notion of a norm on a vector space. We provide a theoretical insight into the relationship between the properties of the probability distribution over the uncertain delivery times and the robustness quality of the schedules produced by the algorithm after a polynomial runtime in terms of approximation ratios

    Scheduling Jobs in Flowshops with the Introduction of Additional Machines in the Future

As this research is guided by a real problem in industry, the flowshop\ud considered has considerable flexibility, which stimulated the development of an\ud innovative methodology for this research. Each stage of the flowshop currently has\ud one or several identical machines. However, the manufacturing company is planning\ud to introduce additional machines with different capabilities in different stages in the\ud near future. Thus, the algorithm proposed and developed for the problem is not only\ud capable of solving the current flow line configuration but also the potential new\ud configurations that may result in the future. A meta-heuristic search algorithm based\ud on Tabu search is developed to solve this NP-hard, industry-guided problem. Six\ud different initial solution finding mechanisms are proposed. A carefully planned\ud nested split-plot design is performed to test the significance of different factors and\ud their impact on the performance of the different algorithms. To the best of our\ud knowledge, this research is the first of its kind that attempts to solve an industry-guided\ud problem with the concern for future developments
