Effects of zinc supplementation on cognitive function in healthy middle-aged and older adults: the ZENITH study
A randomised double-blind placebo-controlled design was employed to investigate the effects of Zn supplementation on cognitive function in 387 healthy adults aged 55ā87 years. Several measures of visual memory, working memory, attention and reaction time were obtained using the Cambridge Automated Neuropsychological Test Battery at baseline and then after 3 and 6 months of 0 (placebo), 15 or 30 mg Zn/d. Younger adults (70 years), and performance improved with practice on some measures. For two out of eight dependent variables, there were significant interactions indicating a beneficial effect (at 3 months only) of both 15 and 30 mg/d on one measure of spatial working memory and a detrimental effect of 15 mg/d on one measure of attention. Further work is required to establish whether these findings generalise to older adults in poorer mental and physical health and with less adequate Zn intake and status than the present sample
Magnetic Response of Magnetospirillum Gryphiswaldense
In this study we modelled and measured the U-turn trajectories of individual
magnetotactic bacteria under the application of rotating magnetic fields,
ranging in ampitude from 1 to 12 mT. The model is based on the balance between
rotational drag and magnetic torque. For accurate verification of this model,
bacteria were observed inside 5 m tall microfluidic channels, so that they
remained in focus during the entire trajectory. From the analysis of hundreds
of trajectories and accurate measurements of bacteria and magnetosome chain
dimensions, we confirmed that the model is correct within measurement error.
The resulting average rate of rotation of Magnetospirillum Gryphiswaldense is
0.74 +- 0.03 rad/mTs.Comment: 17 pages, 12 figure
The Newton polytope of the discriminant of a quaternary cubic form
We determine the 166104 extremal monomials of the discriminant of a quaternary cubic form. These are in bijection with D-equivalence classes of regular triangulations of the 3-dilated tetrahedron. We describe how to compute these triangulations and their D-equivalence classes in order to arrive at our main result. The computation poses several challenges, such as dealing with the sheer number of triangulations effectively, as well as devising a suitably fast algorithm for computation of a D-equivalence class
