Route Planning in Transportation Networks
We survey recent advances in algorithms for route planning in transportation
networks. For road networks, we show that one can compute driving directions in
milliseconds or less even at continental scale. A variety of techniques provide
different trade-offs between preprocessing effort, space requirements, and
query time. Some algorithms can answer queries in a fraction of a microsecond,
while others can deal efficiently with real-time traffic. Journey planning on
public transportation systems, although conceptually similar, is a
significantly harder problem due to its inherent time-dependent and
multicriteria nature. Although exact algorithms are fast enough for interactive
queries on metropolitan transit systems, dealing with continent-sized instances
requires simplifications or heavy preprocessing. The multimodal route planning
problem, which seeks journeys combining schedule-based transportation (buses,
trains) with unrestricted modes (walking, driving), is even harder, relying on

On green routing and scheduling problem
The vehicle routing and scheduling problem has been studied with much
interest within the last four decades. In this paper, some of the existing
literature dealing with routing and scheduling problems with environmental
issues is reviewed, and a description is provided of the problems that have
been investigated and how they are treated using combinatorial optimization

Speeding up Martins' algorithm for multiple objective shortest path problems
The latest transportation systems require the best routes in a large network with respect to multiple objectives simultaneously to be calculated in a very short time. The label setting algorithm of Martins efficiently finds this set of Pareto optimal paths, but sometimes tends to be slow, especially for large networks such as transportation networks. In this article we investigate a number of speedup measures, resulting in new algorithms. It is shown that the calculation time to find the Pareto optimal set can be reduced considerably. Moreover, it is mathematically proven that these algorithms still produce the Pareto optimal set of paths
Distribution planning in a weather-dependent scenario with stochastic travel times: a simheuristics approach
In real-life logistics, distribution plans might be affected by weather conditions (rain, snow, and fog), since they might have a significant effect on traveling times and, therefore, on total distribution costs. In this paper, the distribution problem is modeled as a multi-depot vehicle routing problem with stochastic traveling times. These traveling times are not only stochastic in nature but the specific probability distribution used to model them depends on the particular weather conditions on the delivery day. In order to solve the aforementioned problem, a simheuristic approach combining simulation within a biased-randomized heuristic framework is proposed. As the computational experiments will show, our simulation-optimization algorithm is able to provide high-quality solutions to this NP-hard problem in short computing times even for large-scale instances. From a managerial perspective, such a tool can be very useful in practical applications since it helps to increase the efficiency of the logistics and transportation operations.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Unpacking the Role of Artificial Intelligence for a Multimodal Service System Design
Since requirements of service demands are becoming increasingly complex and diversified, one of the success factors of a multimodal service system is its capability to design a specific service instance satisfying a specific set of requirements. This capability is further highlighted in Ad Hoc Multimodal Service Systems (AHMSSs), where service instances rarely follow a standard form of service delivery and exist only for a limited time. However, due to the increasing scale and frequency of services in many business and public sectors, meeting the desired level of capability has become troublesome. A well-designed Artificial Intelligence (AI) approach can be a solution to the difficulty by addressing the underlying complexity and uncertainty of the AHMSS design process. To conceptualize and foster AI applications to an AHMSS, this study identifies key decision-making problems in the AHMSS design process and discusses the role of AI in the process. The results will form the basis for AI development and implementation for an AHMSS and relevant service systems

Novel optimisation methods for numerical inverse problems
Inverse problems involve the determination of one or more unknown quantities usually appearing in the mathematical formulation of a physical problem. These unknown quantities may be boundary heat flux, various source terms, thermal and material properties, boundary shape and size. Solving inverse problems requires additional information through in-situ data measurements of the field variables of the physical problems. These problems are also ill-posed because the solution itself is sensitive to random errors in the measured input data. Regularisation techniques are usually used in order to deal with the instability of the solution. In the past decades, many methods based on the nonlinear least squares model, both deterministic (CGM) and stochastic (GA, PSO), have been investigated for numerical inverse problems.
The goal of this thesis is to examine and explore new techniques for numerical inverse problems. The background theory of population-based heuristic algorithm known as quantum-behaved particle swarm optimisation (QPSO) is re-visited and examined. To enhance the global search ability of QPSO for complex multi-modal problems, several modifications to QPSO are proposed. These include perturbation operation, Gaussian mutation and ring topology model. Several parameter selection methods for these algorithms are proposed. Benchmark functions were used to test the performance of the modified algorithms. To address the high computational cost of complex engineering optimisation problems, two parallel models of the QPSO (master-slave, static subpopulation) were developed for different distributed systems. A hybrid method, which makes use of deterministic (CGM) and stochastic (QPSO) methods, is proposed to improve the estimated solution and the performance of the algorithms for solving the inverse problems.
Finally, the proposed methods are used to solve typical problems as appeared in many research papers. The numerical results demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of QPSO and the global search ability and stability of the modified versions of QPSO. Two novel methods of providing initial guess to CGM with approximated data from QPSO are also proposed for use in the hybrid method and were applied to estimate heat fluxes and boundary shapes. The simultaneous estimation of temperature dependent thermal conductivity and heat capacity was addressed by using QPSO with Gaussian mutation. This combination provides a stable algorithm even with noisy measurements. Comparison of the performance between different methods for solving inverse problems is also presented in this thesis
