    A multi-task learning CNN for image steganalysis

    Convolutional neural network (CNN) based image steganalysis are increasingly popular because of their superiority in accuracy. The most straightforward way to employ CNN for image steganalysis is to learn a CNN-based classifier to distinguish whether secret messages have been embedded into an image. However, it is difficult to learn such a classifier because of the weak stego signals and the limited useful information. To address this issue, in this paper, a multi-task learning CNN is proposed. In addition to the typical use of CNN, learning a CNN-based classifier for the whole image, our multi-task CNN is learned with an auxiliary task of the pixel binary classification, estimating whether each pixel in an image has been modified due to steganography. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to employ CNN to perform the pixel-level classification of such type. Experimental results have justified the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed multi-task learning CNN

La esteganografía consiste en ocultar mensajes dentro de un objeto conocido como portador para establecer un canal de comunicación encubierto para que el acto de comunicación pase desapercibido para los observadores que tienen acceso a ese canal. Steganalysis se dedica a detectar mensajes ocultos mediante esteganografía; estos mensajes pueden estar implícitos en diferentes tipos de medios, como imágenes digitales, archivos de video, archivos de audio o texto sin formato.     Parallelization of Rich Models for Steganalysis of Digital Images using a CUDA-based Approach

    There are several different methods to make an efficient strategy for steganalysis of digital images. A very powerful method in this area is rich model consisting of a large number of diverse sub-models in both spatial and transform domain that should be utilized. However, the extraction of a various types of features from an image is so time consuming in some steps, especially for training phase with a large number of high resolution images that consist of two steps: train and test. Multithread programming is a near solution to decreasing the required time but it’s limited and it ‘snot so scalable too. In this paper, we present a CUDA based approach for data-parallelization and optimization of sub-model extraction process. Also, construction of the rich model is analyzed in detailed, presenting more efficient solution. Further, some optimization techniques are employed to reduce the total number of GPU memory accesses. Compared to single-thread and multi-threaded CPU processing, 10x-12x and 3x-4x speedups are achieved with implementing our CUDA-based parallel program on GT 540M and it can be scaled with several CUDA cards to achieve better speedups

    Adaptive spatial image steganography and steganalysis using perceptual modelling and machine learning

    Image steganography is a method for communicating secret messages under the cover images. A sender will embed the secret messages into the cover images according to an algorithm, and then the resulting image will be sent to the receiver. The receiver can extract the secret messages with the predefined algorithm. To counter this kind of technique, image steganalysis is proposed to detect the presence of secret messages. After many years of development, current image steganography uses the adaptive algorithm for embedding the secrets, which automatically finds the complex area in the cover source to avoid being noticed. Meanwhile, image steganalysis has also been advanced to universal steganalysis, which does not require the knowledge of the steganographic algorithm. With the development of the computational hardware, i.e., Graphical Processing Units (GPUs), some computational expensive techniques are now available, i.e., Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), which bring a large improvement in the detection tasks in image steganalysis. To defend against the attacks, new techniques are also being developed to improve the security of image steganography, these include designing more scientific cost functions, the key in adaptive steganography, and generating stego images from the knowledge of the CNNs. Several contributions are made for both image steganography and steganalysis in this thesis. Firstly, inspired by the Ranking Priority Profile (RPP), a new cost function for adaptive image steganography is proposed, which uses the two-dimensional Singular Spectrum Analysis (2D-SSA) and Weighted Median Filter (WMF) in the design. The RPP mainly includes three rules, i.e., the Complexity-First rule, the Clustering rule and the Spreading rule, to design a cost function. The 2D-SSA is employed in selecting the key components and clustering the embedding positions, which follows the Complexity-First rule and the Clustering rule. Also, the Spreading rule is followed to smooth the resulting image produced by 2D-SSA with WMF. The proposed algorithm has improved performance over four benchmarking approaches against non-shared selection channel attacks. It also provides comparable performance in selection-channel-aware scenarios, where the best results are observed when the relative payload is 0.3 bpp or larger. The approach is much faster than other model-based methods. Secondly, for image steganalysis, to tackle more complex datasets that are close to the real scenarios and to push image steganalysis further to real-life applications, an Enhanced Residual Network with self-attention ability, i.e., ERANet, is proposed. By employing a more mathematically sophisticated way to extract more effective features in the images and the global self-Attention technique, the ERANet can further capture the stego signal in the deeper layers, hence it is suitable for the more complex situations in the new datasets. The proposed Enhanced Low-Level Feature Representation Module can be easily mounted on other CNNs in selecting the most representative features. Although it comes with a slightly extra computational cost, comprehensive experiments on the BOSSbase and ALASKA#2 datasets have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. Lastly, for image steganography, with the knowledge from the CNNs, a novel postcost-optimization algorithm is proposed. Without modifying the original stego image and the original cost function of the steganography, and no need for training a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN), the proposed method mainly uses the gradient maps from a well-trained CNN to represent the cost, where the original cost map of the steganography is adopted to indicate the embedding positions. This method will smooth the gradient maps before adjusting the cost, which solves the boundary problem of the CNNs having multiple subnets. Extensive experiments have been carried out to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, which provides state-of-the-art performance. In addition, compared to existing work, the proposed method is effcient in computing time as well. In short, this thesis has made three major contributions to image steganography and steganalysis by using perceptual modelling and machine learning. A novel cost function and a post-cost-optimization function have been proposed for adaptive spatial image steganography, which helps protect the secret messages. For image steganalysis, a new CNN architecture has also been proposed, which utilizes multiple techniques for providing state of-the-art performance.     Deep learning is a good steganalysis tool when embedding key is reused for different images, even if there is a cover source-mismatch

    International audienceSince the BOSS competition, in 2010, most steganalysis approaches use a learning methodology involving two steps: feature extraction, such as the Rich Models (RM), for the image representation, and use of the Ensemble Classifier (EC) for the learning step. In 2015, Qian et al. have shown that the use of a deep learning approach that jointly learns and computes the features, was very promising for the steganalysis.In this paper, we follow-up the study of Qian et al., and show that in the scenario where the steganograph always uses the same embedding key for embedding with the simulator in the different images, due to intrinsic joint minimization and the preservation of spatial information, the results obtained from a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) or a Fully Connected Neural Network (FNN), if well parameterized, surpass the conventional use of a RM with an EC.First, numerous experiments were conducted in order to find the best "shape" of the CNN. Second, experiments were carried out in the clairvoyant scenario in order to compare the CNN and FNN to an RM with an EC. The results show more than 16% reduction in the classification error with our CNN or FNN. Third, experiments were also performed in a cover-source mismatch setting. The results show that the CNN and FNN are naturally robust to the mismatch problem.In Addition to the experiments, we provide discussions on the internal mechanisms of a CNN, and weave links with some previously stated ideas, in order to understand the results we obtained.     Visual slam in dynamic environments

    El problema de localización y construcción visual simultánea de mapas (visual SLAM por sus siglas en inglés Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) consiste en localizar una cámara en un mapa que se construye de manera online. Esta tecnología permite la localización de robots en entornos desconocidos y la creación de un mapa de la zona con los sensores que lleva incorporados, es decir, sin contar con ninguna infraestructura externa. A diferencia de los enfoques de odometría en los cuales el movimiento incremental es integrado en el tiempo, un mapa permite que el sensor se localice continuamente en el mismo entorno sin acumular deriva.Asumir que la escena observada es estática es común en los algoritmos de SLAM visual. Aunque la suposición estática es válida para algunas aplicaciones, limita su utilidad en escenas concurridas del mundo real para la conducción autónoma, los robots de servicio o realidad aumentada y virtual entre otros. La detección y el estudio de objetos dinámicos es un requisito para estimar con precisión la posición del sensor y construir mapas estables, útiles para aplicaciones robóticas que operan a largo plazo.Las contribuciones principales de esta tesis son tres: 1. Somos capaces de detectar objetos dinámicos con la ayuda del uso de la segmentación semántica proveniente del aprendizaje profundo y el uso de enfoques de geometría multivisión. Esto nos permite lograr una precisión en la estimación de la trayectoria de la cámara en escenas altamente dinámicas comparable a la que se logra en entornos estáticos, así como construir mapas en 3D que contienen sólo la estructura del entorno estático y estable. 2. Logramos alucinar con imágenes realistas la estructura estática de la escena detrás de los objetos dinámicos. Esto nos permite ofrecer mapas completos con una representación plausible de la escena sin discontinuidades o vacíos ocasionados por las oclusiones de los objetos dinámicos. El reconocimiento visual de lugares también se ve impulsado por estos avances en el procesamiento de imágenes. 3. Desarrollamos un marco conjunto tanto para resolver el problema de SLAM como el seguimiento de múltiples objetos con el fin de obtener un mapa espacio-temporal con información de la trayectoria del sensor y de los alrededores. La comprensión de los objetos dinámicos circundantes es de crucial importancia para los nuevos requisitos de las aplicaciones emergentes de realidad aumentada/virtual o de la navegación autónoma. Estas tres contribuciones hacen avanzar el estado del arte en SLAM visual. Como un producto secundario de nuestra investigación y para el beneficio de la comunidad científica, hemos liberado el código que implementa las soluciones propuestas.<br /
