    Internal energy based grid-forming control for MMC-HVDC systems with wind farm integration

    The virtual synchronous control is regarded as an effective solution for grid-tied converters to operate under weak grid conditions and provide inertia support. However, for those grid-tied converters which control the DC voltage, e.g., the receiving end converter (REC) in modular multilevel converter based high-voltage direct-current (MMC-HVDC) transmission systems with wind farm integration, the application of virtual synchronous control is difficult due to the cascade control loops. The dynamic performance of DC voltage control may also be degraded. To address these issues, a novel grid-forming control strategy with real-time inertia support and fast DC voltage control is proposed for the REC. The cascade control loops of the virtual synchronous control are simplified by utilizing the internal energy stored in sub-module capacitors to emulate synchronous generator rotors. Moreover, the DC voltage is decoupled with the submodule capacitors voltage, thus being robust to sudden power change. Simulation results in PSCAD/EMTDC show that the proposed control realizes fast inertia support and desired dynamic control of the DC voltage, especially in weak grid operation

    The cost reduction of power-electronic devices, the increase in their reliability, efficiency, and power capability, and lower development times, together with more demanding application requirements, has driven the development of several new inverter topologies recently introduced in the industry, particularly medium-voltage converters. New more complex inverter topologies and new application fields come along with additional control challenges, such as voltage imbalances, power-quality issues, higher efficiency needs, and fault-tolerant operation, which necessarily requires the parallel development of modulation schemes. Therefore, recently, there have been significant advances in the field of modulation of dc/ac converters, which conceptually has been dominated during the last several decades almost exclusively by classic pulse-width modulation (PWM) methods.     Control and grid integration of MW-range wind and solar energy conversion systems

    Solar-based energy generation has increased by more than ten times over the same period. In total, worldwide electrical energy consumption increased by approximately 6340 TWh from 2003 to 2013. To meet the challenges created by intermittent energy generation sources, grid operators have increasingly demanded more stringent technical requirements for the connection and operation of grid-connected intermittent energy systems, for instance concerning fault ride through capability, voltage and frequency support, and inertia emulation. Ongoing developments include new or improved high-voltage converters, power converters with higher power density, control systems to provide ride-through capability, implementation of redundancy schemes to provide more reliable generation systems, and the use of high-voltage direct current (HVdc) links for the connection of large off-shore intermittent energy systems

    Hybrid and modular multilevel converter designs for isolated HVDC–DC converters

    Efficient medium and high-voltage dc-dc conversion is critical for future dc grids. This paper proposes a hybrid multilevel dc-ac converter structure that is used as the kernel of dc-dc conversion systems. Operation of the proposed dc-ac converter is suited to trapezoidal ac-voltage waveforms. Quantitative and qualitative analyses show that said trapezoidal operation reduces converter footprint, active and passive components' size, and on-state losses relative to conventional modular multilevel converters. The proposed converter is scalable to high voltages with controllable ac-voltage slope; implying tolerable dv/dt stresses on the converter transformer. Structural variations of the proposed converter with enhanced modularity and improved efficiency will be presented and discussed with regards to application in front-to-front isolated dc-dc conversion stages, and in light of said trapezoidal operation. Numerical results provide deeper insight of the presented converter designs with emphasis on system design aspects. Results obtained from a proof-of-concept 1-kW experimental test rig confirm the validity of simulation results, theoretical analyses, and simplified design equations presented in this paper. - 2013 IEEE.Scopu

    233 p.El objetivo de la presente tesis ha sido el aumento de la eficiencia y la mejora del funcionamiento de convertidores multinivel modulares (MMCs) en aplicaciones de media tensión (drives, STATCOMs, redes de media tensión en DC o colectores de energía en parques eólicos). Para ello se ha propuesto la utilización de una modulación de baja frecuencia de conmutación como la Eliminación Selectiva de Armónicos (SHE-PWM). De esta forma se reducen las pérdidas de conmutación significativamente. Las contribuciones de la tesis son:- Nueva formulación para implementar SHE-PWM: Esta nueva formulación, a diferencia de las existentes, proporciona un sistema único de ecuaciones que es válido para cualquier forma de onda. De esta forma, es posible buscar los ángulos de disparo y los patrones de conmutación, que resuelven el problema de SHE-PWM, sin necesidad de predefinir ninguna forma de onda. Por lo tanto, la búsqueda de ángulos de disparo se simplifica significativamente y se puede encontrar un alto número de soluciones diferentes, pudiendo optimizar el diseño de la forma de onda. Además, esta formulación es válida con simetrías de cuarto de onda y de media onda.- Controles de la corriente circulante en MMCs cuando se utiliza SHE-PWM: estos controles, a diferencia de los existentes, no distorsionan la tensión de fase de salida cuando se utiliza SHE-PWM y permiten mantener equilibradas las tensiones de los condensadores de los sub-módulos del MMC, además de reducir rizado de la corriente circulante. En concreto, se han propuesto dos controles, uno con (N+1) SHE-PWM y otro con (2N+1) SHE-PWM

    Common-Mode Voltage Elimination in Multilevel Power Inverter-Based Motor Drive Applications

    [EN] The industry and academia are focusing their efforts on finding more efficient and reliable electrical machines and motor drives. However, many of the motors driven by pulse-width modulated converters face the recurring problem of common-mode voltage (CMV). In fact, this voltage leads to other problems such as bearing breakdown, deterioration of the stator winding insulation and electromagnetic interferences (EMI) that can affect the lifespan and correct operation of the motors. In this sense, multilevel converters have proven to be a useful tool for solving these problems and mitigating CMV over the past few decades. Among other reasons, because they provide additional degrees of freedom when comparing with two-level converters. However, although there are several proposals in the scientific literature on this topic, no complete information has been reviewed about the CMV issues and the different multilevel alternatives that can be used to solve it. In this context, the objective of this work is to determine how multilevel power converters provide additional degrees of freedom to make the reduction of the CMV possible by using specific modulation techniques, making it easier for engineers and scientists in this field to find solutions to this problem. This document consists of a descriptive study that collects the strengths and weaknesses of most important multilevel power converters, with special emphasis on how CMV affects each of them. In addition, the differences of modulation techniques aimed to the CMV reduction are explained in terms of output voltage, operating linear range, and generated CMV.     Control Strategies for Improving Reliability and Efficiency in Modular Power Converters

    The significance of modular power converters has escalated drastically in various applications such as electrical energy distribution, industrial motor drives and More Electric Aircraft (MEA) owing to the benefits such as scalability, design flexibility, higher degree of fault tolerance and better maintenance. One of the main advantages of modular systems is the ability to replace the faulty converter cells during maintenance instead of the entire system. However, such maintenance cycles can result in a system of converter cells with different aging. A system with cells having different aging arises the threats of multiple maintenance, lower reliability and availability, and high maintenance costs. For controlling the thermal-stress based aging of modular power converters, power routing strategy was proposed. The thesis focuses on the different implementation strategies of power routing for modular converters. Power semiconductors are one of the most reliability critical components in power converters, and thermal-stress has been identified as the main cause of their failure. This thesis work concentrates on the power semiconductor reliability improvement algorithms. For improving system lifetime, virtual resistor based power routing algorithms for single stage and multi-stage modular architectures have been investigated through simulations and validated with experiment. A unified framework for routing the power in complex modular converter architectures is defined based on graph theory. Popular converter architectures for Smart Transformer (ST) and MEA applications are modeled as graphs to serve as the basis for developing power flow optimization. The effectiveness of graph theory for optimizing the power flow in modular systems is demonstrated with the help of proposed algorithms

    A Review on Multi-Terminal High Voltage Direct Current Networks for Wind Power Integration

    With the growing pressure to substitute fossil fuel-based generation, Renewable Energy Sources (RES) have become one of the main solutions from the power sector in the fight against climate change. Offshore wind farms, for example, are an interesting alternative to increase renewable power production, but they represent a challenge when being interconnected to the grid, since new installations are being pushed further off the coast due to noise and visual pollution restrictions. In this context, Multi-Terminal High Voltage Direct Current (MT-HVDC) networks are the most preferred technology for this purpose and for onshore grid reinforcements. They also enable the delivery of power from the shore to offshore Oil and Gas (O&G) production platforms, which can help lower the emissions in the transition away from fossil fuels. In this work, we review relevant aspects of the operation and control of MT-HVDC networks for wind power integration. The review approaches topics such as the main characteristics of MT-HVDC projects under discussion/commissioned around the world, rising challenges in the control and the operation of MT-HVDC networks and the modeling and the control of the Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) stations. To illustrate the challenges on designing the control system of a MT-HVDC network and to corroborate the technical discussions, a simulation of a three-terminal MT-HVDC network integrating wind power generation and offshore O&G production units to the onshore grid is performed in Matlab's Simscape Electrical toolbox. The results highlight the main differences between two alternatives to design the control system for an MT-HVDC network
