Effective video multicast over wireless internet
With the rapid growth of wireless networks and great success of Internet video, wireless video services are expected to be widely deployed in the near future. As different types of wireless networks are converging into all IP networks, i.e., the Internet, it is important to study video delivery over the wireless Internet. This paper proposes a novel end-system based adaptation protocol calledWireless Hybrid Adaptation Layered Multicast (WHALM) protocol for layered video multicast over wireless Internet. In WHALM the sender dynamically collects bandwidth distribution from the receivers and uses an optimal layer rate allocation mechanism to reduce the mismatches between the coarse-grained layer subscription levels and the heterogeneous and dynamic rate requirements from the receivers, thus maximizing the degree of satisfaction of all the receivers in a multicast session. Based on sampling theory and theory of probability, we reduce the required number of bandwidth feedbacks to a reasonable degree and use a scalable feedback mechanism to control the feedback process practically. WHALM is also tuned to perform well in wireless networks by integrating an end-to-end loss differentiation algorithm (LDA) to differentiate error losses from congestion losses at the receiver side. With a series of simulation experiments over NS platform, WHALM has been proved to be able to greatly improve the degree of satisfaction of all the receivers while avoiding congestion collapse on the wireless Internet
Congestion Control for Network-Aware Telehaptic Communication
Telehaptic applications involve delay-sensitive multimedia communication
between remote locations with distinct Quality of Service (QoS) requirements
for different media components. These QoS constraints pose a variety of
challenges, especially when the communication occurs over a shared network,
with unknown and time-varying cross-traffic. In this work, we propose a
transport layer congestion control protocol for telehaptic applications
operating over shared networks, termed as dynamic packetization module (DPM).
DPM is a lossless, network-aware protocol which tunes the telehaptic
packetization rate based on the level of congestion in the network. To monitor
the network congestion, we devise a novel network feedback module, which
communicates the end-to-end delays encountered by the telehaptic packets to the
respective transmitters with negligible overhead. Via extensive simulations, we
show that DPM meets the QoS requirements of telehaptic applications over a wide
range of network cross-traffic conditions. We also report qualitative results
of a real-time telepottery experiment with several human subjects, which reveal
that DPM preserves the quality of telehaptic activity even under heavily
congested network scenarios. Finally, we compare the performance of DPM with
several previously proposed telehaptic communication protocols and demonstrate
that DPM outperforms these protocols.Comment: 25 pages, 19 figure
Video Quality Prediction for Video over Wireless Access Networks (UMTS and WLAN)
Transmission of video content over wireless access networks (in particular, Wireless Local
Area Networks (WLAN) and Third Generation Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (3G UMTS)) is growing exponentially and gaining popularity, and is predicted to expose new revenue streams for mobile network operators. However, the success of these video applications over wireless access networks very much depend on meeting the user’s Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. Thus, it is highly desirable to be able to predict and, if appropriate, to control video quality to meet user’s QoS requirements. Video quality is
affected by distortions caused by the encoder and the wireless access network. The impact of these distortions is content dependent, but this feature has not been widely used in existing
video quality prediction models.
The main aim of the project is the development of novel and efficient models for video
quality prediction in a non-intrusive way for low bitrate and resolution videos and to
demonstrate their application in QoS-driven adaptation schemes for mobile video streaming
applications. This led to five main contributions of the thesis as follows:(1) A thorough understanding of the relationships between video quality, wireless access network (UMTS and WLAN) parameters (e.g. packet/block loss, mean burst length
and link bandwidth), encoder parameters (e.g. sender bitrate, frame rate) and content type is provided. An understanding of the relationships and interactions between them
and their impact on video quality is important as it provides a basis for the development of non-intrusive video quality prediction models.(2) A new content classification method was proposed based on statistical tools as content
type was found to be the most important parameter.
(3) Efficient regression-based and artificial neural network-based learning models were
developed for video quality prediction over WLAN and UMTS access networks. The
models are light weight (can be implemented in real time monitoring), provide a measure for user perceived quality, without time consuming subjective tests. The models have potential applications in several other areas, including QoS control and
optimization in network planning and content provisioning for network/service
providers.(4) The applications of the proposed regression-based models were investigated in (i)
optimization of content provisioning and network resource utilization and (ii) A new
fuzzy sender bitrate adaptation scheme was presented at the sender side over WLAN and UMTS access networks.
(5) Finally, Internet-based subjective tests that captured distortions caused by the encoder
and the wireless access network for different types of contents were designed. The

Region of interest-based adaptive multimedia streaming scheme
Adaptive multimedia streaming aims at adjusting
the transmitted content based on the available bandwidth such as losses that often severely affect the end-user perceived quality are minimized and consequently the transmission quality increases. Current solutions affect equally the whole viewing area of the multimedia frames, despite research showing that there are regions on which the viewers are more interested in than on others. This paper presents a novel region of interest-based adaptive scheme (ROIAS) for multimedia streaming that when performing transmission-related quality adjustments, selectively affects the quality of those regions of the image the viewers are the least interested in. As the quality of the regions the viewers are the most interested in will not change (or will involve little change),the proposed scheme provides higher overall end-user perceived
quality than any of the existing adaptive solutions
A Novel QoS provisioning Scheme for OBS networks
This paper presents Classified Cloning, a novel QoS provisioning mechanism for OBS networks carrying real-time
applications (such as video on demand, Voice over IP, online
gaming and Grid computing). It provides such applications with a minimum loss rate while minimizing end-to-end delay and jitter. ns-2 has been used as the simulation tool, with new OBS modules having been developed for performance evaluation purposes. Ingress node performance has been investigated, as well as the overall performance of the suggested scheme. The results obtained showed that new scheme has superior performance to classical cloning. In particular, QoS provisioning offers a guaranteed burst loss rate, delay and expected value of jitter, unlike existing proposals for QoS implementation in OBS which use the burst offset time to provide such differentiation. Indeed, classical schemes increase both end-to-end delay and
jitter. It is shown that the burst loss rate is reduced by 50% reduced over classical cloning
Joint in-network video rate adaptation and measurement-based admission control: algorithm design and evaluation
The important new revenue opportunities that multimedia services offer to network and service providers come with important management challenges. For providers, it is important to control the video quality that is offered and perceived by the user, typically known as the quality of experience (QoE). Both admission control and scalable video coding techniques can control the QoE by blocking connections or adapting the video rate but influence each other's performance. In this article, we propose an in-network video rate adaptation mechanism that enables a provider to define a policy on how the video rate adaptation should be performed to maximize the provider's objective (e.g., a maximization of revenue or QoE). We discuss the need for a close interaction of the video rate adaptation algorithm with a measurement based admission control system, allowing to effectively orchestrate both algorithms and timely switch from video rate adaptation to the blocking of connections. We propose two different rate adaptation decision algorithms that calculate which videos need to be adapted: an optimal one in terms of the provider's policy and a heuristic based on the utility of each connection. Through an extensive performance evaluation, we show the impact of both algorithms on the rate adaptation, network utilisation and the stability of the video rate adaptation. We show that both algorithms outperform other configurations with at least 10 %. Moreover, we show that the proposed heuristic is about 500 times faster than the optimal algorithm and experiences only a performance drop of approximately 2 %, given the investigated video delivery scenario
