    Get PDF
In this paper two very efficient pulse width modulation techniques were discussed named Sin pulse width modulation and space vector pulse width modulation. The basic structure of the three-level inverter neutral-point clamped is introduced and the basic idea about space vector pulse width modulation for three-level voltage source inverter has been discussed in detail. Nearest three vectors space vector pulse width modulation control algorithm is adopted as the control strategy for the three phase three level NPC inverter in order to compensate the neutral-point shifting. Mathematical formulation for calculating switching sequence has determined. Comparative analysis proving superiority of the space vector pulse width modulation technique over the conventional pulse width modulation, and the results of the simulations of inverter confirm the feasibility and advantage of the space vector pulse width modulation strategy over sin pulse width modulation in terms of good utilization of dc-bus voltage, low current ripple and reduced switching frequency. Space vector pulse width modulation provides advantages better fundamental output voltage and useful in improving harmonic performance and reducing total harmonic distortion

Health Condition Monitoring and Fault-Tolerant Operation of Adjustable Speed Drives

Adjustable speed drives (ASDs) have been extensively used in industrial applications over the past few decades because of their benefits of energy saving and control flexibilities. However, the wider penetration of ASD systems into industrial applications is hindered by the lack of health monitoring and fault-tolerant operation techniques, especially in safety-critical applications. In this dissertation, a comprehensive portfolio of health condition monitoring and fault-tolerant operation strategies is developed and implemented for multilevel neutral-point-clamped (NPC) power converters in ASDs. Simulations and experiments show that these techniques can improve power cycling lifetime of power transistors, on-line diagnosis of switch faults, and fault-tolerant capabilities. The first contribution of this dissertation is the development of a lifetime improvement Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) method which can significantly extend the power cycling lifetime of Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs) in NPC inverters operating at low frequencies. This PWM method is achieved by injecting a zero-sequence signal with a frequency higher than that of the IGBT junction-to-case thermal time constants. This, in turn, lowers IGBT junction temperatures at low output frequencies. Thermal models, simulation and experimental verifications are carried out to confirm the effectiveness of this PWM method. As a second contribution of this dissertation, a novel on-line diagnostic method is developed for electronic switch faults in power converters. Targeted at three-level NPC converters, this diagnostic method can diagnose any IGBT faults by utilizing the information on the dc-bus neutral-point current and switching states. This diagnostic method only requires one additional current sensor for sensing the neutral-point current. Simulation and experimental results verified the efficacy of this diagnostic method. The third contribution consists of the development and implementation of a fault-tolerant topology for T-Type NPC power converters. In this fault-tolerant topology, one additional phase leg is added to the original T-Type NPC converter. In addition to providing a fault-tolerant solution to certain switch faults in the converter, this fault-tolerant topology can share the overload current with the original phase legs, thus increasing the overload capabilities of the power converters. A lab-scale 30-kVA ASD based on this proposed topology is implemented and the experimental results verified its benefits

Nowadays solar power has become an alternate method of power generation for standalone systems for both urban and rural electrification. The Power Electronics converters used for the power conversion should provide quality AC output to have near sinusoidal voltage. The inverter topology and the PWM technique of the inverter play a vital role in providing quality output. This paper reviews recent contribution to establish the current status and development of the technology to provide reader with an insightful review of multilevel inverters and its control strategy. A brief overview of Multi Level Inverters (MLI) topology and advantages of Cascaded H-Bridge Multi Level Inverter (CHBMLI) for solar power conversion is presented and the various control strategies for CHBMLI are discussed with view point of quality output.  Among the different PWM techniques discussed, the Elliptical Multi Carrier PWM (EMC PWM) control strategy is the new modulation technique which successfully improves the DC bus utilization without over-modulation and without adding third harmonic to fundamental frequency. Also, the technique is successful in reducing the %THD at the output voltage. The control strategy is simple even with increased   level of output voltage, which is not possible in SVPWM technique.  Hence, the EMC PWM technique is having better performance when compared to Multi Carrier PWM (MCPWM) technique, Space Vector PWM (SVPWM) technique and Third Harmonic Injection PWM (THIPWM) technique.&nbsp

Investigation of slim type BLDC motor drive with torque ripple minimization using abridged space-vector PWM control method

Abstract: Brushless DC (BLDC) motors are becoming an increasingly popular motor of choice for its unique characteristics. The BLDC motor drive is assumed to have trapezoidal back-electromotive force (EMF), rectangular phase currents and together produces the desired torque. However, practical back-EMF waveform might not be exactly trapezoidal because of current ripple, design considerations and manufacturing limitations. The adverse effect is the torque ripple generated due to the current ripple that causes mechanical vibration, acoustic noise and affects the accuracy of speed and position control which is not desirable in motor operation. In this paper an algorithm is developed to control and minimize the generated torque ripple using Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) scheme. The efficiency improvement of slim type BLDC motor is confirmed using MATLAB environment and low cost TI Piccolo F28035 microcontroller (MC)

Outcome of DC-link capacitor voltage variation on inverter switching states is accessible and designed for three-level inverter. In this paper for back-to-back system by including five-level diode clamped topologies we are proposing a novel DC link balancing method. The algorithm which we proposed here is the improvement of variable switching frequency control policy which was previously introduced by means of three-level back-to-back system which depends on calculations of adjacent capacitor voltages which focuses on three-level DC link network to identify the information about potential variation in consecutive nodes. As per the above proposal, all four capacitors in DC link network are effectively balancing the voltage. Due to optimization of switching losses the proposed method has advantages over the variable switching frequency.DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijece.v3i1.1471

Power Quality Enhancement in Electricity Grids with Wind Energy Using Multicell Converters and Energy Storage

    Get PDF
In recent years, the wind power industry is experiencing a rapid growth and more wind farms with larger size wind turbines are being connected to the power system. While this contributes to the overall security of electricity supply, large-scale deployment of wind energy into the grid also presents many technical challenges. Most of these challenges are one way or another, related to the variability and intermittent nature of wind and affect the power quality of the distribution grid. Power quality relates to factors that cause variations in the voltage level and frequency as well as distortion in the voltage and current waveforms due to wind variability which produces both harmonics and inter-harmonics. The main motivation behind work is to propose a new topology of the static AC/DC/AC multicell converter to improve the power quality in grid-connected wind energy conversion systems. Serial switching cells have the ability to achieve a high power with lower-size components and improve the voltage waveforms at the input and output of the converter by increasing the number of cells. Furthermore, a battery energy storage system is included and a power management strategy is designed to ensure the continuity of power supply and consequently the autonomy of the proposed system. The simulation results are presented for a 149.2 kW wind turbine induction generator system and the results obtained demonstrate the reduced harmonics, improved transient response, and reference tracking of the voltage output of the wind energy conversion system.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
