    Improved dynamical particle swarm optimization method for structural dynamics

    A methodology to the multiobjective structural design of buildings based on an improved particle swarm optimization algorithm is presented, which has proved to be very efficient and robust in nonlinear problems and when the optimization objectives are in conflict. In particular, the behaviour of the particle swarm optimization (PSO) classical algorithm is improved by dynamically adding autoadaptive mechanisms that enhance the exploration/exploitation trade-off and diversity of the proposed algorithm, avoiding getting trapped in local minima. A novel integrated optimization system was developed, called DI-PSO, to solve this problem which is able to control and even improve the structural behaviour under seismic excitations. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, the methodology is tested against some benchmark problems. Then a 3-story-building model is optimized under different objective cases, concluding that the improved multiobjective optimization methodology using DI-PSO is more efficient as compared with those designs obtained using single optimization.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Parameters identification of unknown delayed genetic regulatory networks by a switching particle swarm optimization algorithm

    The official published version can be found at the link below.This paper presents a novel particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm based on Markov chains and competitive penalized method. Such an algorithm is developed to solve global optimization problems with applications in identifying unknown parameters of a class of genetic regulatory networks (GRNs). By using an evolutionary factor, a new switching PSO (SPSO) algorithm is first proposed and analyzed, where the velocity updating equation jumps from one mode to another according to a Markov chain, and acceleration coefficients are dependent on mode switching. Furthermore, a leader competitive penalized multi-learning approach (LCPMLA) is introduced to improve the global search ability and refine the convergent solutions. The LCPMLA can automatically choose search strategy using a learning and penalizing mechanism. The presented SPSO algorithm is compared with some well-known PSO algorithms in the experiments. It is shown that the SPSO algorithm has faster local convergence speed, higher accuracy and algorithm reliability, resulting in better balance between the global and local searching of the algorithm, and thus generating good performance.     Meta-heuristic algorithms in car engine design: a literature survey

    Meta-heuristic algorithms are often inspired by natural phenomena, including the evolution of species in Darwinian natural selection theory, ant behaviors in biology, flock behaviors of some birds, and annealing in metallurgy. Due to their great potential in solving difficult optimization problems, meta-heuristic algorithms have found their way into automobile engine design. There are different optimization problems arising in different areas of car engine management including calibration, control system, fault diagnosis, and modeling. In this paper we review the state-of-the-art applications of different meta-heuristic algorithms in engine management systems. The review covers a wide range of research, including the application of meta-heuristic algorithms in engine calibration, optimizing engine control systems, engine fault diagnosis, and optimizing different parts of engines and modeling. The meta-heuristic algorithms reviewed in this paper include evolutionary algorithms, evolution strategy, evolutionary programming, genetic programming, differential evolution, estimation of distribution algorithm, ant colony optimization, particle swarm optimization, memetic algorithms, and artificial immune system

    Bat Algorithm: Literature Review and Applications

    Bat algorithm (BA) is a bio-inspired algorithm developed by Yang in 2010 and BA has been found to be very efficient. As a result, the literature has expanded significantly in the last 3 years. This paper provides a timely review of the bat algorithm and its new variants. A wide range of diverse applications and case studies are also reviewed and summarized briefly here.     Proposal and Comparative Study of Evolutionary Algorithms for Optimum Design of a Gear System

    This paper proposes a novel metaheuristic framework using a Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm with the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II). Both algorithms are combined employing a collaborative strategy with sequential execution, which is called DE-NSGA-II. The DE-NSGA-II takes advantage of the exploration abilities of the multi-objective evolutionary algorithms strengthened with the ability to search global mono-objective optimum of DE, that enhances the capability of finding those extreme solutions of Pareto Optimal Front (POF) difficult to achieve. Numerous experiments and performance comparisons between different evolutionary algorithms were performed on a referent problem for the mono-objective and multi-objective literature, which consists of the design of a double reduction gear train. A preliminary study of the problem, solved in an exhaustive way, discovers the low density of solutions in the vicinity of the optimal solution (mono-objective case) as well as in some areas of the POF of potential interest to a decision maker (multi-objective case). This characteristic of the problem would explain the considerable difficulties for its resolution when exact methods and/or metaheuristics are used, especially in the multi-objective case. However, the DE-NSGA-II framework exceeds these difficulties and obtains the whole POF which significantly improves the few previous multi-objective studies.Fil: Méndez Babey, Máximo.
