    Digital interventions for subjective and objective social isolation among individuals with mental health conditions: a scoping review

    Background: Social isolation encompasses subjective and objective concepts. Both are associated with negative health consequences and are more prevalent among people with mental health problems than among the general population. To alleviate social isolation, digital interventions have potential as accessible alternatives or adjuncts to face-to-face interventions. This scoping review aimed to describe the types of digital interventions evaluated for feasibility, acceptability and effectiveness in alleviating social isolation among individuals with mental health problems, and to present an overview of the quantitative evidence yielded to inform future intervention design. // Methods: We searched five electronic databases for quantitative and mixed methods studies published between January 2000 and July 2020. Studies were included if they evaluated digital interventions for individuals with mental health conditions, had subjective and/or objective social isolation as their primary outcome, or as one of their outcomes if no primary outcome was specified. Feasibility studies were included if feasibility outcomes were the primary outcomes and social isolation was among their secondary outcomes. A narrative synthesis was conducted to present our findings. The protocol was registered on Open Science Framework (doi:https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/CNX8A). // Results: Thirty-two studies were included for our review: 16 feasibility studies, seven single-group studies and nine effectiveness trials. There was great variation in the interventions, study designs and sample populations. Interventions included web-based programmes, phone-based programmes, blended interventions, socially assistive robots and virtual reality interventions. Many were feasibility studies, or otherwise not fully powered to detect an effect if one were present, thus preventing clear conclusions about clinical effectiveness. Satisfactory feasibility outcomes indicated potential for future trials to assess these interventions. // Conclusion: Our scoping review identified a range of digital approaches utilized to alleviate social isolation among individuals with mental health disorders. Conclusions regarding clinical effectiveness cannot be reached due to variability of approaches and lack of large-scale randomized controlled trials. To make clear recommendations for digital social isolation interventions, future research needs to be based on rigorous methods and larger samples. Future studies should also focus on utilizing theory-driven approaches and improving existing approaches to advance the field

    Social Robots in Hospitals: A Systematic Review

    Hospital environments are facing new challenges this century. One of the most important is the quality of services to patients. Social robots are gaining prominence due to the advantages they offer; in particular, several of their main uses have proven beneficial during the pandemic. This study aims to shed light on the current status of the design of social robots and their interaction with patients. To this end, a systematic review was conducted using WoS and MEDLINE, and the results were exhaustive analyzed. The authors found that most of the initiatives and projects serve the el- derly and children, and specifically, that they helped these groups fight diseases such as dementia, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), cancer, and diabetes

    This dissertation explores the mean field Heisenberg spin system and its evolution in time. We first study the system in equilibrium, where we explore the tool known as Stein's method, used for determining convergence rates to thermodynamic limits, both in an example proof for a mean field Ising system and in tightening a previous result for the equilibrium mean field Heisenberg system. We then model the evolution of the mean field Heisenberg model using Glauber dynamics and use this method to test the equilibrium results of two previous papers, uncovering a typographical error in one. Agreement in other aspects between theory and our simulations validates our approach in the equilibrium case. Next, we compare the evolution of the Heisenberg system under Glauber dynamics to a number of forms of Brownian motion and determine that Brownian motion is a poor match in most situations. Turning back to Stein's method, we consider what sort of proof regarding the behavior of the mean field Heisenberg model over time is obtainable and look at several possible routes to that path. We finish up by offering a Stein's method approach to understanding the evolution of the mean field Heisenberg model and offer some insight into its convergence in time to a thermodynamic limit. This demonstrates the potential usefulness of Stein's method in understanding the finite time behavior of evolving systems. In our efforts, we encounter several holes in current mathematical and physical knowledge. In particular, we suggest the development of tools for Markov chains currently unavailable and the development of a more physically based algorithm for the evolution of Heisenberg systems. These projects lie beyond the scope of this dissertation but it is our hope that these ideas may be useful to future research

    Connecting Neurons to a Mobile Robot: An In Vitro Bidirectional Neural Interface

    One of the key properties of intelligent behaviors is the capability to learn and adapt to changing environmental conditions. These features are the result of the continuous and intense interaction of the brain with the external world, mediated by the body. For this reason “embodiment” represents an innovative and very suitable experimental paradigm when studying the neural processes underlying learning new behaviors and adapting to unpredicted situations. To this purpose, we developed a novel bidirectional neural interface. We interconnected in vitro neurons, extracted from rat embryos and plated on a microelectrode array (MEA), to external devices, thus allowing real-time closed-loop interaction. The novelty of this experimental approach entails the necessity to explore different computational schemes and experimental hypotheses. In this paper, we present an open, scalable architecture, which allows fast prototyping of different modules and where coding and decoding schemes and different experimental configurations can be tested. This hybrid system can be used for studying the computational properties and information coding in biological neuronal networks with far-reaching implications for the future development of advanced neuroprostheses
