    Recent research activities focused on improving the steady-state as well as the dynamic behavior of DC-DC converters for proper system performance, by proposing different design methods and control approaches with growing tendency to using digital implementation over analog practices. Because of the rapid advancement in semiconductors and microprocessor industry, digital control grew in popularity among PWM converters and is taking over analog techniques due to availability of fast speed microprocessors, flexibility and immunity to noise and environmental variations. Furthermore, increased interest in Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) makes it a convenient design platform for digitally controlled converters. The objective of this research is to propose new digital control schemes, aiming to improve the steady-state and transient responses of a high switching frequency FPGA-based digitally controlled DC-DC converters. The target is to achieve enhanced performance in terms of tight regulation with minimum power consumption and high efficiency at steady-state, as well as shorter settling time with optimal over- and undershoots during transients. The main task is to develop new and innovative digital PWM techniques in order to achieve: 1. Tight regulation at steady-state: by proposing high resolution DPWM architecture, based on Digital Clock Management (DCM) resources available on FPGA boards. The proposed architecture Window-Masked Segmented Digital Clock Manager-FPGA based Digital Pulse Width Modulator Technique, is designed to achieve high resolution operating at high switching frequencies with minimum power consumption. 2. Enhanced dynamic response: by applying a shift to the basic saw-tooth DPWM signal, in order to benefit from the best linearity and simplest architecture offered by the conventional counter-comparator DPWM. This proposed control scheme will help the compensator reach the steady-state value faster.     High Performance Power Management Integrated Circuits for Portable Devices

    abstract: Portable devices often require multiple power management IC (PMIC) to power different sub-modules, Li-ion batteries are well suited for portable devices because of its small size, high energy density and long life cycle. Since Li-ion battery is the major power source for portable device, fast and high-efficiency battery charging solution has become a major requirement in portable device application. In the first part of dissertation, a high performance Li-ion switching battery charger is proposed. Cascaded two loop (CTL) control architecture is used for seamless CC-CV transition, time based technique is utilized to minimize controller area and power consumption. Time domain controller is implemented by using voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) and voltage controlled delay line (VCDL). Several efficiency improvement techniques such as segmented power-FET, quasi-zero voltage switching (QZVS) and switching frequency reduction are proposed. The proposed switching battery charger is able to provide maximum 2 A charging current and has an peak efficiency of 93.3%. By configure the charger as boost converter, the charger is able to provide maximum 1.5 A charging current while achieving 96.3% peak efficiency. The second part of dissertation presents a digital low dropout regulator (DLDO) for system on a chip (SoC) in portable devices application. The proposed DLDO achieve fast transient settling time, lower undershoot/overshoot and higher PSR performance compared to state of the art. By having a good PSR performance, the proposed DLDO is able to power mixed signal load. To achieve a fast load transient response, a load transient detector (LTD) enables boost mode operation of the digital PI controller. The boost mode operation achieves sub microsecond settling time, and reduces the settling time by 50% to 250 ns, undershoot/overshoot by 35% to 250 mV and 17% to 125 mV without compromising the system stability.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Electrical Engineering 201

    Time-Domain/Digital Frequency Synchronized Hysteresis Based Fully Integrated Voltage Regulator

    abstract: Power management integrated circuit (PMIC) design is a key module in almost all electronics around us such as Phones, Tablets, Computers, Laptop, Electric vehicles, etc. The on-chip loads such as microprocessors cores, memories, Analog/RF, etc. requires multiple supply voltage domains. Providing these supply voltages from off-chip voltage regulators will increase the overall system cost and limits the performance due to the board and package parasitics. Therefore, an on-chip fully integrated voltage regulator (FIVR) is required. The dissertation presents a topology for a fully integrated power stage in a DC-DC buck converter achieving a high-power density and a time-domain hysteresis based highly integrated buck converter. A multi-phase time-domain comparator is proposed in this work for implementing the hysteresis control, thereby achieving a process scaling friendly highly digital design. A higher-order LC notch filter along with a flying capacitor which couples the input and output voltage ripple is implemented. The power stage operates at 500 MHz and can deliver a maximum power of 1.0 W and load current of 1.67 A, while occupying 1.21 mm2 active die area. Thus achieving a power density of 0.867 W/mm2 and current density of 1.377 A/mm2. The peak efficiency obtained is 71% at 780 mA of load current. The power stage with the additional off-chip LC is utilized to design a highly integrated current mode hysteretic buck converter operating at 180 MHz. It achieves 20 ns of settling and 2-5 ns of rise/fall time for reference tracking. The second part of the dissertation discusses an integrated low voltage switched-capacitor based power sensor, to measure the output power of a DC-DC boost converter. This approach results in a lower complexity, area, power consumption, and a lower component count for the overall PV MPPT system. Designed in a 180 nm CMOS process, the circuit can operate with a supply voltage of 1.8 V. It achieves a power sense accuracy of 7.6%, occupies a die area of 0.0519 mm2, and consumes 0.748 mW of power.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Electrical Engineering 201

    Triaxial digital fluxgate magnetometer for NASA applications explorer mission: Results of tests of critical elements

    Tests performed to prove the critical elements of the triaxial digital fluxgate magnetometer design were described. A method for improving the linearity of the analog to digital converter portion of the instrument was studied in detail. A sawtooth waveform was added to the signal being measured before the A/D conversion, and averaging the digital readings over one cycle of the sawtooth. It was intended to reduce bit error nonlinearities present in the A/D converter which could be expected to be as much as 16 gamma if not reduced. No such nonlinearities were detected in the output of the instrument which included the feature designed to reduce these nonlinearities. However, a small scale nonlinearity of plus or minus 2 gamma with a 64 gamma repetition rate was observed in the unit tested. A design improvement intended to eliminate this small scale nonlinearity was examined

    Novel load identification techniques and a steady state self-tuning prototype for switching mode power supplies

    Control of Switched Mode Power Supplies (SMPS) has been traditionally achieved through analog means with dedicated integrated circuits (ICs). However, as power systems are becoming increasingly complex, the classical concept of control has gradually evolved into the more general problem of power management, demanding functionalities that are hardly achievable in analog controllers. The high flexibility offered by digital controllers and their capability to implement sophisticated control strategies, together with the programmability of controller parameters, make digital control very attractive as an option for improving the features of dcdc converters. On the other side, digital controllers find their major weak point in the achievable dynamic performances of the closed loop system. Indeed, analogto-digital conversion times, computational delays and sampling-related delays strongly limit the small signal closed loop bandwidth of a digitally controlled SMPS. Quantization effects set other severe constraints not known to analog solutions. For these reasons, intensive scientific research activity is addressing the problem of making digital compensator stronger competitors against their analog counterparts in terms of achievable performances. In a wide range of applications, dcdc converters with high efficiency over the whole range of their load values are required. Integrated digital controllers for Switching Mode Power Supplies are gaining growing interest, since it has been shown the feasibility of digital controller ICs specifically developed for high frequency switching converters. One very interesting potential benefit is the use of autotuning of controller parameters (on-line controllers), so that the dynamic response can be set at the software level, independently of output capacitor filters, component variations and ageing. These kind of algorithms are able to identify the output filter configuration (system identification) and then automatically compute the best compensator gains to adjust system margins and bandwidth. In order to be an interesting solution, however, the self-tuning should satisfy two important requirements: it should not heavily affect converter operation under nominal condition and it should be based on a simple and robust algorithm whose complexity does not require a significant increase of the silicon area of the IC controller. The first issue is avoided performing the system identification (SI) with the system open loop configuration, where perturbations can be induced in the system before the start up. Much more challenging is to satisfy this requirement during steady state operations, where perturbations on the output voltage are limited by the regular operations of the converter. The main advantage of steady state SI methods, is the detection of possible non-idealities occurring during the converter operations. In this way, the system dynamics can be consequently adjusted with the compensator parameters tuning. The resource saving issue, requires the development of äd-hocßelf-tuning techniques specifically tailored for integrated digitally controlled converters. Considering the flexibility of digital control, self-tuning algorithms can be studied and easily integrated at hardware level into closed loop SMPS reducing development time and R & D costs. The work of this dissertation finds its origin in this context. Smart power management is accomplished by tuning the controller parameters accordingly to the identified converter configuration. Themain difficult for self-tuning techniques is the identification of the converter output filter configuration. Two novel system identification techniques have been validated in this dissertation. The open loop SI method is based on the system step response, while dithering amplification effects are exploited for the steady state SI method. The open loop method can be used as autotunig approach during or before the system start up, a step evolving reference voltage has been used as system perturbation and to obtain the output filter information with the Power Spectral Density (PSD) computation of the system step response. The use of ¢§ modulator is largely increasing in digital control feedback. During the steady state, the finite resolution introduces quantization effects on the signal path causing low frequency contributes of the digital control word. Through oversampling-dithering capabilities of ¢§ modulators, resolution improvements are obtained. The presented steady state identification techniques demonstrates that, amplifying the dithering effects on the signal path, the output filter information can be obtained on the digital side by processing with the PSD computation the perturbed output voltage. The amount of noise added on the output voltage does not affect the converter operations, mathematical considerations have been addressed and then justified both with a Matlab/Simulink fixed-point and a FPGA-based closed loop system. The load output filter identification of both algorithms, refer to the frequency domain. When the respective perturbations occurs, the system response is observed on the digital side and processed with the PSD computation. The extracted parameters are the resonant frequency ans the possible ESR (Effective Series Resistance) contributes,which can be detected as maximumin the PSD output. The SI methods have been validated for different configurations of buck converters on a fixed-point closed loop model, however, they can be easily applied to further converter configurations. The steady state method has been successfully integrated into a FPGA-based prototype for digitally controlled buck converters, that integrates a PSD computer needed for the load parameters identification. At this purpose, a novel VHDL-coded full-scalable hybrid processor for Constant Geometry FFT (CG-FFT) computation has been designed and integrated into the PSD computation system. The processor is based on a variation of the conventional algorithm used for FFT, which is the Constant-Geometry FFT (CG-FFT).Hybrid CORDIC-LUT scalable architectures, has been introduced as alternative approach for the twiddle factors (phase factors) computation needed during the FFT algorithms execution. The shared core architecture uses a single phase rotator to satisfy all TF requests. It can achieve improved logic saving by trading off with computational speed. The pipelined architecture is composed of a number of stages equal to the number of PEs and achieves the highest possible throughput, at the expense of more hardware usage

A step up transformer is designed to carry 4.6kW and 10 kVp-p for a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) AC power supply and for ozone generation. An STM (STMicroelectronics) microcontroller is employed to control the phase shift angle of the PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) inverter. The operating frequency of the PWM inverter is 25 kHz. Zero voltage detection can be reached and achieves maximum efficiency. In addition, a high voltage transformer is included The practical results shown that the DBD power supply can be controlled at the chosen value and extreme efficiency can be 87.45 % at 4.6 kW/10 kVp-p

    Contribution to time domain readout circuits design for multi-standard sensing system for low voltage supply and high-resolution applications

    Mención Internacional en el título de doctorThis research activity has the purpose of open new possibilities in the design of capacitance-to-digital converters (CDCs) by developing a solution based on time domain conversion. This can be applied to applications related with the Internet-of-Things (IoT). These applications are present in any electronic devices where sensing is needed. To be able to reduce the area of the whole system with the required performance, micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) sensors are used in these applications. We propose a new family of sensor readout electronics to be integrated with MEMS sensors. Within the time domain converters, Dual Slope (DS) topology is very interesting to explore a new compromise between performances, area and power consumption. DS topology has been extensively used in instrumentation. The simplicity and robustness of the blocks inside classical DS converters it is the main advantage. However, they are not efficient for applications where higher bandwidth is required. To extend the bandwidth, DS converters have been introduced into ΔΣ loops. This topology has been named as integrating converters. They increase the bandwidth compare to classical DS architecture but at the expense of higher complexity. In this work we propose the use of a new family of DS converters that keep the advantages of the classical architecture and introduce noise shaping. This way the bandwidth is increased without extra blocks. The Self-Compensated noise-shaped DS converter (the name given to the new topology) keeps the signal transfer function (STF) and the noise transfer function (NTF) of Integrating converters. However, we introduce a new arrangement in the core of the converter to do noise shaping without extra circuitry. This way the simplicity of the architecture is preserved. We propose to use the Self-Compensated DS converter as a CDC for MEMS sensors. This work makes a study of the best possible integration of the two blocks to keep the signal integrity considering the electromechanical behavior of the sensor. The purpose of this front-end is to be connected to any kind of capacitive MEMS sensor. However, to prove the concepts developed in this thesis the architecture has been connected to a pressure MEMS sensor. An experimental prototype was implemented in 130-nm CMOS process using the architecture mentioned before. A peak SNR of 103.9 dB (equivalent to 1Pa) has been achieved within a time measurement of 20 ms. The final prototype has a power consumption of 220 μW with an effective area of 0.317 mm2. The designed architecture shows good performance having competitive numbers against high resolution topologies in amplitude domain.Esta actividad de investigación tiene el propósito de explorar nuevas posibilidades en el diseño de convertidores de capacitancia a digital (CDC) mediante el desarrollo de una solución basada en la conversión en el dominio del tiempo. Estos convertidores se pueden utilizar en aplicaciones relacionadas con el mercado del Internet-de-las-cosas (IoT). Hoy en día, estas aplicaciones están presentes en cualquier dispositivo electrónico donde se necesite sensar una magnitud. Para poder reducir el área de todo el sistema con el rendimiento requerido, se utilizan sensores de sistemas micro-electromecánicos (MEMS) en estas aplicaciones. Proponemos una nueva familia de electrónica de acondicionamiento para integrar con sensores MEMS. Dentro de los convertidores de dominio de tiempo, la topología del doble-rampa (DS) es muy interesante para explorar un nuevo compromiso entre rendimiento, área y consumo de energía. La topología de DS se ha usado ampliamente en instrumentación. La simplicidad y la solidez de los bloques dentro de los convertidores DS clásicos es la principal ventaja. Sin embargo, no son eficientes para aplicaciones donde se requiere mayor ancho de banda. Para ampliar el ancho de banda, los convertidores DS se han introducido en bucles ΔΣ. Esta topología ha sido nombrada como Integrating converters. Esta topología aumenta el ancho de banda en comparación con la arquitectura clásica de DS, pero a expensas de una mayor complejidad. En este trabajo, proponemos el uso de una nueva familia de convertidores DS que mantienen las ventajas de la arquitectura clásica e introducen la configuración del ruido. De esta forma, el ancho de banda aumenta sin bloques adicionales. El convertidor Self-Compensated noise-shaped DS (el nombre dado a la nueva topología) mantiene la función de transferencia de señal (STF) y la función de transferencia de ruido (NTF) de los Integrating converters. Sin embargo, presentamos una nueva topología en el núcleo del convertidor para conformar el ruido sin circuitos adicionales. De esta manera, se preserva la simplicidad de la arquitectura. Proponemos utilizar el Self-Compensated noise-shaped DS como un CDC para sensores MEMS. Este trabajo hace un estudio de la mejor integración posible de los dos bloques para mantener la integridad de la señal considerando el comportamiento electromecánico del sensor. El propósito de este circuito de acondicionamiento es conectarse a cualquier tipo de sensor MEMS capacitivo. Sin embargo, para demostrar los conceptos desarrollados en esta tesis, la arquitectura se ha conectado a un sensor MEMS de presión. Se ha implementado dos prototipos experimentales en un proceso CMOS de 130-nm utilizando la arquitectura mencionada anteriormente. Se ha logrado una relación señal-ruido máxima de 103.9 dB (equivalente a 1 Pa) con un tiempo de medida de 20 ms. El prototipo final tiene un consumo de energía de 220 μW con un área efectiva de 0.317 mm2.     Design and debugging of multi-step analog to digital converters

    With the fast advancement of CMOS fabrication technology, more and more signal-processing functions are implemented in the digital domain for a lower cost, lower power consumption, higher yield, and higher re-configurability. The trend of increasing integration level for integrated circuits has forced the A/D converter interface to reside on the same silicon in complex mixed-signal ICs containing mostly digital blocks for DSP and control. However, specifications of the converters in various applications emphasize high dynamic range and low spurious spectral performance. It is nontrivial to achieve this level of linearity in a monolithic environment where post-fabrication component trimming or calibration is cumbersome to implement for certain applications or/and for cost and manufacturability reasons. Additionally, as CMOS integrated circuits are accomplishing unprecedented integration levels, potential problems associated with device scaling – the short-channel effects – are also looming large as technology strides into the deep-submicron regime. The A/D conversion process involves sampling the applied analog input signal and quantizing it to its digital representation by comparing it to reference voltages before further signal processing in subsequent digital systems. Depending on how these functions are combined, different A/D converter architectures can be implemented with different requirements on each function. Practical realizations show the trend that to a first order, converter power is directly proportional to sampling rate. However, power dissipation required becomes nonlinear as the speed capabilities of a process technology are pushed to the limit. Pipeline and two-step/multi-step converters tend to be the most efficient at achieving a given resolution and sampling rate specification. This thesis is in a sense unique work as it covers the whole spectrum of design, test, debugging and calibration of multi-step A/D converters; it incorporates development of circuit techniques and algorithms to enhance the resolution and attainable sample rate of an A/D converter and to enhance testing and debugging potential to detect errors dynamically, to isolate and confine faults, and to recover and compensate for the errors continuously. The power proficiency for high resolution of multi-step converter by combining parallelism and calibration and exploiting low-voltage circuit techniques is demonstrated with a 1.8 V, 12-bit, 80 MS/s, 100 mW analog to-digital converter fabricated in five-metal layers 0.18-µm CMOS process. Lower power supply voltages significantly reduce noise margins and increase variations in process, device and design parameters. Consequently, it is steadily more difficult to control the fabrication process precisely enough to maintain uniformity. Microscopic particles present in the manufacturing environment and slight variations in the parameters of manufacturing steps can all lead to the geometrical and electrical properties of an IC to deviate from those generated at the end of the design process. Those defects can cause various types of malfunctioning, depending on the IC topology and the nature of the defect. To relive the burden placed on IC design and manufacturing originated with ever-increasing costs associated with testing and debugging of complex mixed-signal electronic systems, several circuit techniques and algorithms are developed and incorporated in proposed ATPG, DfT and BIST methodologies. Process variation cannot be solved by improving manufacturing tolerances; variability must be reduced by new device technology or managed by design in order for scaling to continue. Similarly, within-die performance variation also imposes new challenges for test methods. With the use of dedicated sensors, which exploit knowledge of the circuit structure and the specific defect mechanisms, the method described in this thesis facilitates early and fast identification of excessive process parameter variation effects. The expectation-maximization algorithm makes the estimation problem more tractable and also yields good estimates of the parameters for small sample sizes. To allow the test guidance with the information obtained through monitoring process variations implemented adjusted support vector machine classifier simultaneously minimize the empirical classification error and maximize the geometric margin. On a positive note, the use of digital enhancing calibration techniques reduces the need for expensive technologies with special fabrication steps. Indeed, the extra cost of digital processing is normally affordable as the use of submicron mixed signal technologies allows for efficient usage of silicon area even for relatively complex algorithms. Employed adaptive filtering algorithm for error estimation offers the small number of operations per iteration and does not require correlation function calculation nor matrix inversions. The presented foreground calibration algorithm does not need any dedicated test signal and does not require a part of the conversion time. It works continuously and with every signal applied to the A/D converter. The feasibility of the method for on-line and off-line debugging and calibration has been verified by experimental measurements from the silicon prototype fabricated in standard single poly, six metal 0.09-µm CMOS process
