    Authentication enhancement in command and control networks: (a study in Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks)

    Intelligent transportation systems contribute to improved traffic safety by facilitating real time communication between vehicles. By using wireless channels for communication, vehicular networks are susceptible to a wide range of attacks, such as impersonation, modification, and replay. In this context, securing data exchange between intercommunicating terminals, e.g., vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, constitutes a technological challenge that needs to be addressed. Hence, message authentication is crucial to safeguard vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) from malicious attacks. The current state-of-the-art for authentication in VANETs relies on conventional cryptographic primitives, introducing significant computation and communication overheads. In this challenging scenario, physical (PHY)-layer authentication has gained popularity, which involves leveraging the inherent characteristics of wireless channels and the hardware imperfections to discriminate between wireless devices. However, PHY-layerbased authentication cannot be an alternative to crypto-based methods as the initial legitimacy detection must be conducted using cryptographic methods to extract the communicating terminal secret features. Nevertheless, it can be a promising complementary solution for the reauthentication problem in VANETs, introducing what is known as “cross-layer authentication.” This thesis focuses on designing efficient cross-layer authentication schemes for VANETs, reducing the communication and computation overheads associated with transmitting and verifying a crypto-based signature for each transmission. The following provides an overview of the proposed methodologies employed in various contributions presented in this thesis. 1. The first cross-layer authentication scheme: A four-step process represents this approach: initial crypto-based authentication, shared key extraction, re-authentication via a PHY challenge-response algorithm, and adaptive adjustments based on channel conditions. Simulation results validate its efficacy, especially in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) scenarios while proving its resilience against active and passive attacks. 2. The second cross-layer authentication scheme: Leveraging the spatially and temporally correlated wireless channel features, this scheme extracts high entropy shared keys that can be used to create dynamic PHY-layer signatures for authentication. A 3-Dimensional (3D) scattering Doppler emulator is designed to investigate the scheme’s performance at different speeds of a moving vehicle and SNRs. Theoretical and hardware implementation analyses prove the scheme’s capability to support high detection probability for an acceptable false alarm value ≤ 0.1 at SNR ≥ 0 dB and speed ≤ 45 m/s. 3. The third proposal: Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) integration for improved authentication: Focusing on enhancing PHY-layer re-authentication, this proposal explores integrating RIS technology to improve SNR directed at designated vehicles. Theoretical analysis and practical implementation of the proposed scheme are conducted using a 1-bit RIS, consisting of 64 × 64 reflective units. Experimental results show a significant improvement in the Pd, increasing from 0.82 to 0.96 at SNR = − 6 dB for multicarrier communications. 4. The fourth proposal: RIS-enhanced vehicular communication security: Tailored for challenging SNR in non-line-of-sight (NLoS) scenarios, this proposal optimises key extraction and defends against denial-of-service (DoS) attacks through selective signal strengthening. Hardware implementation studies prove its effectiveness, showcasing improved key extraction performance and resilience against potential threats. 5. The fifth cross-layer authentication scheme: Integrating PKI-based initial legitimacy detection and blockchain-based reconciliation techniques, this scheme ensures secure data exchange. Rigorous security analyses and performance evaluations using network simulators and computation metrics showcase its effectiveness, ensuring its resistance against common attacks and time efficiency in message verification. 6. The final proposal: Group key distribution: Employing smart contract-based blockchain technology alongside PKI-based authentication, this proposal distributes group session keys securely. Its lightweight symmetric key cryptography-based method maintains privacy in VANETs, validated via Ethereum’s main network (MainNet) and comprehensive computation and communication evaluations. The analysis shows that the proposed methods yield a noteworthy reduction, approximately ranging from 70% to 99%, in both computation and communication overheads, as compared to the conventional approaches. This reduction pertains to the verification and transmission of 1000 messages in total

    Analysis and Design of Algorithms for the Improvement of Non-coherent Massive MIMO based on DMPSK for beyond 5G systems

    Mención Internacional en el título de doctorNowadays, it is nearly impossible to think of a service that does not rely on wireless communications. By the end of 2022, mobile internet represented a 60% of the total global online traffic. There is an increasing trend both in the number of subscribers and in the traffic handled by each subscriber. Larger data rates, smaller extreme-to-extreme (E2E) delays and greater number of devices are current interests for the development of mobile communications. Furthermore, it is foreseen that these demands should also be fulfilled in scenarios with stringent conditions, such as very fast varying wireless communications channels (either in time or frequency) or scenarios with power constraints, mainly found when the equipment is battery powered. Since most of the wireless communications techniques and standards rely on the fact that the wireless channel is somehow characterized or estimated to be pre or post-compensated in transmission (TX) or reception (RX), there is a clear problem when the channels vary rapidly or the available power is constrained. To estimate the wireless channel and obtain the so-called channel state information (CSI), some of the available resources (either in time, frequency or any other dimension), are utilized by including known signals in the TX and RX typically known as pilots, thus avoiding their use for data transmission. If the channels vary rapidly, they must be estimated many times, which results in a very low data efficiency of the communications link. Also, in case the power is limited or the wireless link distance is large, the resulting signal-tointerference- plus-noise ratio (SINR) will be low, which is a parameter that is directly related to the quality of the channel estimation and the performance of the data reception. This problem is aggravated in massive multiple-input multiple-output (massive MIMO), which is a promising technique for future wireless communications since it can increase the data rates, increase the reliability and cope with a larger number of simultaneous devices. In massive MIMO, the base station (BS) is typically equipped with a large number of antennas that are coordinated. In these scenarios, the channels must be estimated for each antenna (or at least for each user), and thus, the aforementioned problem of channel estimation aggravates. In this context, algorithms and techniques for massive MIMO without CSI are of interest. This thesis main topic is non-coherent massive multiple-input multiple-output (NC-mMIMO) which relies on the use of differential M-ary phase shift keying (DMPSK) and the spatial diversity of the antenna arrays to be able to detect the useful transmitted data without CSI knowledge. On the one hand, hybrid schemes that combine the coherent and non-coherent schemes allowing to get the best of both worlds are proposed. These schemes are based on distributing the resources between non-coherent (NC) and coherent data, utilizing the NC data to estimate the channel without using pilots and use the estimated channel for the coherent data. On the other hand, new constellations and user allocation strategies for the multi-user scenario of NC-mMIMO are proposed.     Integration of hybrid networks, AI, Ultra Massive-MIMO, THz frequency, and FBMC modulation toward 6g requirements : A Review

    The fifth-generation (5G) wireless communications have been deployed in many countries with the following features: wireless networks at 20 Gbps as peak data rate, a latency of 1-ms, reliability of 99.999%, maximum mobility of 500 km/h, a bandwidth of 1-GHz, and a capacity of 106 up to Mbps/m2. Nonetheless, the rapid growth of applications, such as extended/virtual reality (XR/VR), online gaming, telemedicine, cloud computing, smart cities, the Internet of Everything (IoE), and others, demand lower latency, higher data rates, ubiquitous coverage, and better reliability. These higher requirements are the main problems that have challenged 5G while concurrently encouraging researchers and practitioners to introduce viable solutions. In this review paper, the sixth-generation (6G) technology could solve the 5G limitations, achieve higher requirements, and support future applications. The integration of multiple access techniques, terahertz (THz), visible light communications (VLC), ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output ( μm -MIMO), hybrid networks, cell-free massive MIMO, and artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) have been proposed for 6G. The main contributions of this paper are a comprehensive review of the 6G vision, KPIs (key performance indicators), and advanced potential technologies proposed with operation principles. Besides, this paper reviewed multiple access and modulation techniques, concentrating on Filter-Bank Multicarrier (FBMC) as a potential technology for 6G. This paper ends by discussing potential applications with challenges and lessons identified from prior studies to pave the path for future research

    Reliable Beamforming at Terahertz Bands: Are Causal Representations the Way Forward?

    Future wireless services, such as the metaverse require high information rate, reliability, and low latency. Multi-user wireless systems can meet such requirements by utilizing the abundant terahertz bandwidth with a massive number of antennas, creating narrow beamforming solutions. However, existing solutions lack proper modeling of channel dynamics, resulting in inaccurate beamforming solutions in high-mobility scenarios. Herein, a dynamic, semantically aware beamforming solution is proposed for the first time, utilizing novel artificial intelligence algorithms in variational causal inference to compute the time-varying dynamics of the causal representation of multi-modal data and the beamforming. Simulations show that the proposed causality-guided approach for Terahertz (THz) beamforming outperforms classical MIMO beamforming techniques.Comment: Accepted at IEEE ICASSP 202

    Signal Design and Machine Learning Assisted Nonlinearity Compensation for Coherent Optical Fibre Communication Links

    This thesis investigates low-complexity digital signal processing (DSP) for signal design and nonlinearity compensation strategies to improve the performance of single-mode optical fibre links over different distance scales. The performance of a novel ML-assisted inverse regular perturbation technique that mitigates fibre nonlinearities was investigated numerically with a dual-polarization 64 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) link over 800 km distance. The model outperformed the heuristically-optimised digital backpropagation approach with <5 steps per span and mitigated the gain expansion issue, which limits the accuracy of an untrained model when the balance between the nonlinear and linear components becomes considerable. For short reach links, the phase noise due to low-cost, high-linewidth lasers is a more significant channel impairment. A novel constellation optimisation algorithm was, therefore, proposed to design modulation formats that are robust against both additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and the residual laser phase noise (i.e., after carrier phase estimation). Subsequently, these constellations were numerically validated in the context of a 400ZR standard system, and achieved up to 1.2 dB gains in comparison with the modulation formats which were optimised only for the AWGN channel. The thesis concludes by examining a joint strategy to modulate and demodulate signals in a partially-coherent AWGN (PCAWGN) channel. With a low-complexity PCAWGN demapper, 8- to 64-ary modulation formats were designed and validated through numerical simulations. The bit-wise achievable information rates (AIR) and post forward error correction (FEC) bit error rates (BER) of the designed constellations were numerically validated with: the theoretically optimum, Euclidean (conventional), and low-complexity PCAWGN demappers. The resulting constellations demonstrated post-FEC BER shaping gains of up to 2.59 dB and 2.19 dB versus uniform 64 QAM and 64-ary constellations shaped for the purely AWGN channel model, respectively. The described geometric shaping strategies can be used to either relax linewidth and/or carrier phase estimator requirements, or to increase signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) tolerance of a system in the presence of residual phase noise

    Neural-Kalman Schemes for Non-Stationary Channel Tracking and Learning

    This Thesis focuses on channel tracking in Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM), a widely-used method of data transmission in wireless communications, when abrupt changes occur in the channel. In highly mobile applications, new dynamics appear that might make channel tracking non-stationary, e.g. channels might vary with location, and location rapidly varies with time. Simple examples might be the di erent channel dynamics a train receiver faces when it is close to a station vs. crossing a bridge vs. entering a tunnel, or a car receiver in a route that grows more tra c-dense. Some of these dynamics can be modelled as channel taps dying or being reborn, and so tap birth-death detection is of the essence. In order to improve the quality of communications, we delved into mathematical methods to detect such abrupt changes in the channel, such as the mathematical areas of Sequential Analysis/ Abrupt Change Detection and Random Set Theory (RST), as well as the engineering advances in Neural Network schemes. This knowledge helped us nd a solution to the problem of abrupt change detection by informing and inspiring the creation of low-complexity implementations for real-world channel tracking. In particular, two such novel trackers were created: the Simpli- ed Maximum A Posteriori (SMAP) and the Neural-Network-switched Kalman Filtering (NNKF) schemes. The SMAP is a computationally inexpensive, threshold-based abrupt-change detector. It applies the three following heuristics for tap birth-death detection: a) detect death if the tap gain jumps into approximately zero (memoryless detection); b) detect death if the tap gain has slowly converged into approximately zero (memory detection); c) detect birth if the tap gain is far from zero. The precise parameters for these three simple rules can be approximated with simple theoretical derivations and then ne-tuned through extensive simulations. The status detector for each tap using only these three computationally inexpensive threshold comparisons achieves an error reduction matching that of a close-to-perfect path death/birth detection, as shown in simulations. This estimator was shown to greatly reduce channel tracking error in the target Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) range at a very small computational cost, thus outperforming previously known systems. The underlying RST framework for the SMAP was then extended to combined death/birth and SNR detection when SNR is dynamical and may drift. We analyzed how di erent quasi-ideal SNR detectors a ect the SMAP-enhanced Kalman tracker's performance. Simulations showed SMAP is robust to SNR drift in simulations, although it was also shown to bene t from an accurate SNR detection. The core idea behind the second novel tracker, NNKFs, is similar to the SMAP, but now the tap birth/death detection will be performed via an arti cial neuronal network (NN). Simulations show that the proposed NNKF estimator provides extremely good performance, practically identical to a detector with 100% accuracy. These proposed Neural-Kalman schemes can work as novel trackers for multipath channels, since they are robust to wide variations in the probabilities of tap birth and death. Such robustness suggests a single, low-complexity NNKF could be reusable over di erent tap indices and communication environments. Furthermore, a di erent kind of abrupt change was proposed and analyzed: energy shifts from one channel tap to adjacent taps (partial tap lateral hops). This Thesis also discusses how to model, detect and track such changes, providing a geometric justi cation for this and additional non-stationary dynamics in vehicular situations, such as road scenarios where re ections on trucks and vans are involved, or the visual appearance/disappearance of drone swarms. An extensive literature review of empirically-backed abrupt-change dynamics in channel modelling/measuring campaigns is included. For this generalized framework of abrupt channel changes that includes partial tap lateral hopping, a neural detector for lateral hops with large energy transfers is introduced. Simulation results suggest the proposed NN architecture might be a feasible lateral hop detector, suitable for integration in NNKF schemes. Finally, the newly found understanding of abrupt changes and the interactions between Kalman lters and neural networks is leveraged to analyze the neural consequences of abrupt changes and brie y sketch a novel, abrupt-change-derived stochastic model for neural intelligence, extract some neuro nancial consequences of unstereotyped abrupt dynamics, and propose a new portfolio-building mechanism in nance: Highly Leveraged Abrupt Bets Against Failing Experts (HLABAFEOs). Some communication-engineering-relevant topics, such as a Bayesian stochastic stereotyper for hopping Linear Gauss-Markov (LGM) models, are discussed in the process. The forecasting problem in the presence of expert disagreements is illustrated with a hopping LGM model and a novel structure for a Bayesian stereotyper is introduced that might eventually solve such problems through bio-inspired, neuroscienti cally-backed mechanisms, like dreaming and surprise (biological Neural-Kalman). A generalized framework for abrupt changes and expert disagreements was introduced with the novel concept of Neural-Kalman Phenomena. This Thesis suggests mathematical (Neural-Kalman Problem Category Conjecture), neuro-evolutionary and social reasons why Neural-Kalman Phenomena might exist and found signi cant evidence for their existence in the areas of neuroscience and nance.     On the Effect of Channel Knowledge in Underwater Acoustic Communications: Estimation, Prediction and Protocol

    Underwater acoustic communications are limited by the following channel impairments: time variability, narrow bandwidth, multipath, frequency selective fading and the Doppler effect. Orthogonal Frequency Division Modulation (OFDM) is recognized as an effective solution to such impairments, especially when optimally designed according to the propagation conditions. On the other hand, OFDM implementation requires accurate channel knowledge atboth transmitter and receiver sides. Long propagation delay may lead to outdated channel information. In this work, we present an adaptive OFDM scheme where channel state information is predicted through a Kalman-like filter so as to optimize communication parameters, including the cyclic prefix length. This mechanism aims to mitigate the variability of channel delay spread. This is cast in a protocol where channel estimation/prediction are jointly considered, so as to allow efficiency. The performance obtained through extensive simulations using real channels and interference show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, both in terms of rate and reliability, at the expense of an increasing complexity. However, this solution is significantly preferable to the conventional mechanism, where channel estimation is performed only at the receiver, with channel coefficients sent back to the transmit node by means of frequent overhead signaling

    In-band-full-duplex integrated access and backhaul enabled next generation wireless networks

    In sixth generation (6G) wireless networks, the severe traffic congestion in the microwave frequencies motivates the exploration of the large available bandwidth in the millimetre-wave (mmWave) frequencies to achieve higher network capacity and data rate. Since large-scale antenna arrays and dense base station deployment are required, the hybrid beamforming architecture and the recently proposed integrated access and backhaul (IAB) networks become potential candidates for providing cost and hardware-friendly techniques for 6G wireless networks. In addition, in-band-full-duplex (IBFD) has been recently paid much more research attention since it can make the transmission and reception occur in the same time and frequency band, which nearly doubles the communication spectral efficiency (SE) compared with state-of-the-art half-duplex (HD) systems. Since 6G will explore sensing as its new capability, future wireless networks can go far beyond communications. Motivated by this, the development of integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) systems, where radar and communication systems share the same spectrum resources and hardware, has become one of the major goals in 6G. This PhD thesis focuses on the design and analysis of IBFD-IAB wireless networks in the frequency range 2 (FR2) band (≥ 24.250 GHz) at mmWave frequencies for the potential use in 6G. Firstly, we develop a novel design for the single-cell FR2-IBFD-IAB networks with subarray-based hybrid beamforming, which can enhance the SE and coverage while reducing the latency. The radio frequency (RF) beamformers are obtained via RF codebooks given by a modified matrix-wise Linde-Buzo-Gray (LBG) algorithm. The self-interference (SI) is cancelled in three stages, where the first stage of antenna isolation is assumed to be successfully deployed. The second stage consists of the optical domain-based RF cancellation, where cancellers are connected with the RF chain pairs. The third stage is comprised of the digital cancellation via successive interference cancellation followed by minimum mean-squared error (MSE) baseband receiver. Multiuser interference in the access link is cancelled by zero-forcing at the IAB-node transmitter. The proposed codebook algorithm avoids undesirable low-rank behaviour, while the proposed staged-SI cancellation (SIC) shows satisfactory cancellation performance in the wideband IBFD scenario. However, the system performance can be affected by the hardware impairments (HWI) and RF effective channel estimation errors. Secondly, we study an FR2-IBFD-ISAC-IAB network for vehicle-to-everything communications, where the IAB-node acts as a roadside unit performing sensing and communication simultaneously (i.e., at the same time and frequency band). The SI due to the IBFD operation will be cancelled in the propagation, analogue, and digital domains; only the residual SI (RSI) is reserved for performance analysis. Considering the subarray-based hybrid beamforming structure, including HWI and RF effective SI channel estimation error, the unscented Kalman filter is used for tracking multiple vehicles in the studied scenario. The proposed system shows an enhanced SE compared with the HD system, and the tracking MSEs averaged across all vehicles of each state parameter are close to their posterior Cramér-Rao lower bounds. Thirdly, we analyse the performance of the multi-cell wideband single-hop backhaul FR2-IBFD-IAB networks by using stochastic geometry analysis. We model the wired-connected next generation NodeBs (gNBs) as the Matérn hard-core point process (MHCPP) to meet the real-world deployment requirement and reduce the cost caused by wired connection in the network. We first derive association probabilities that reflect how likely the typical user-equipment is served by a gNB or an IAB-node based on the maximum long-term averaged biased-received-desired-signal power criteria. Further, by leveraging the composite Gamma-Lognormal distribution, we derive results for the signal to interference plus noise ratio coverage, capacity with outage, and ergodic capacity of the network. In order to assess the impact of noise, we consider the sidelobe gain on inter-cell interference links and the analogue to digital converter quantization noise. Compared with the HD transmission, the designated system shows an enhanced capacity when the SIC operates successfully. We also study how the power bias and density ratio of the IAB-node to gNB, and the hard-core distance can affect system performance. Overall, this thesis aims to contribute to the research efforts of shaping the 6G wireless networks by designing and analysing the FR2-IBFD-IAB inspired networks in the FR2 band at mmWave frequencies that will be potentially used in 6G for both communication only and ISAC scenarios

    Two-Timescale Joint Precoding Design and RIS Optimization for User Tracking in Near-Field MIMO Systems

    In this paper, we propose a novel framework that aims to jointly design the reflection coefficients of multiple RISs and the precoding strategy of a single BS to optimize the self-tracking of the position and the velocity of a single multi-antenna UE that moves either in the far- or near-field region. Differently from the literature, and to keep the overall complexity affordable, we assume that RIS optimization is performed less frequently than localization and precoding adaptation. The proposed procedure leads to minimize the inverse of the received power in the UE position uncertainty area between two subsequent optimization steps. The optimal RIS and precoder strategy are compared with the classical beam-focusing strategy and with a scheme that maximizes the communication rate. It is shown that if the RISs are optimized for communications, their configuration is suboptimal when used for tracking purposes. Numerical results show that in typical indoor environments with only one BS and a few RISs operating on millimeter waves, high location accuracy in the range of less than half a meter can be achieved
