    Discovery and composition of web services using artificial intelligence planning and web service modeling ontology

    In today’s Web environment, Web services are the preferred standards-based way to realize Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) computing. A problem that has become one of the recent critical issues is automated discovery and composition of Semantic Web services. A number of approaches have been presented to solve the problem. However, most of these approaches only consider discovery or composition of Web services but not both. In this study, an effective approach called AIMO, based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) planning, Web Service Modeling Ontology (WSMO), and Semantic Web has been proposed to tackle the problem. The main purpose of this study is to investigate and develop a novel approach for automated Web service discovery and composition. In this case, a comparative evaluation of state-of-the-art approaches for Web service composition approaches has been done and the strengths and weaknesses of those approaches have been discussed. Moreover a translator for interaction between WSMO and AI-planning based on Description Logics has been proposed. In addition, some parts of AIMO architecture have been tested on a practical case study, and the results based on the experimental validation demonstrate that AIMO provides an effective and applicable solution. AIMO continues to support loose coupling paradigm of SOA by separating the discovery from the composition of Web services

    SAMuS : service-oriented architecture for multisensor surveillance in smart homes

    The design of a service-oriented architecture for multisensor surveillance in smart homes is presented as an integrated solution enabling automatic deployment, dynamic selection, and composition of sensors. Sensors are implemented as Web-connected devices, with a uniform Web API. RESTdesc is used to describe the sensors and a novel solution is presented to automatically compose Web APIs that can be applied with existing Semantic Web reasoners. We evaluated the solution by building a smart Kinect sensor that is able to dynamically switch between IR and RGB and optimizing person detection by incorporating feedback from pressure sensors, as such demonstrating the collaboration among sensors to enhance detection of complex events. The performance results show that the platform scales for many Web APIs as composition time remains limited to a few hundred milliseconds in almost all cases

    Network service registration based on role-goal-process-service meta-model in a P2P network

    Service composition-based network software customisation is currently a research hotspot in the field of software engineering. A key problem of the hotspot is how to efficiently discover services distributed over the Internet. In the service oriented architecture, service discovery suffers from the performance bottleneck of centralised universal description discovery and integration (UDDI), and inaccurate matching of service semantics. In this study, the authors describe a novel method for service labelling, registration and discovery, which is based on the role-goal-process-service meta-model. This approach enables ones to achieve accurate matching of service semantics by extending web service description language with RGP demand-information. The authors also suggest a peer-to-peer (P2P)-based architecture of service discovery to address the issues in the UDDI bottleneck and the complexity of semantic computation. By adopting the proposed approach, an experiment prototype system has been designed and implemented in Beijing municipal transportation system. The experimental results show the proposed approach is effective in addressing the aforementioned problems

    WS-mediator for improving dependability of service composition

    Web Services and service-oriented architectures (SOAs) represent a new paradigm for building distributed computing applications. In recent years, they have started to play a critical role in numerous e-Science and e-Commerce applications. The advantages of Web Services, such as their loosely coupled architecture and standardized interoperability, make them a desirable platform, especially for developing large-scale applications such as those based on cross-organizational service composition. However, the Web Service technology is now facing many serious issues that need to be addressed, one of the most important ones being the dependability of their composition. Web Service composition relies on individual component services and computer networks, particularly the Internet. As the component services are autonomous, prior to use their dependability is unknown. In addition to that, computer networks are inherently unreliable media: from the user's perspective, network failures may undermine the dependability of Web Services. Consequently, failures of individual component services and of the network can undermine the dependability of the entire application relying on service composition. Our research is intended to contribute to achieving higher dependability of Web Service composition. We have developed a novel solution, called WS-Mediator system, implementing resilience-explicit computing and fault tolerance mechanisms to improve the dependability of Web Service composition. It consists of a number of subsystems, called Sub-Mediators, which are deployed at various geographical locations across the Internet to monitor Web Services and dynamically generate Web Service dependability metadata in order to make resilience-explicit decisions. In addition to applying the fault tolerance mechanisms that deal with various kinds of faults during the service composition, the resilience-explicit reconfiguration mechanism dynamically selects the most dependable Web Services to achieve higher service composition dependability fault tolerance. A specific instance of the WS-Mediator architecture has been developed in the Java Web Service technology. A series of experiments with real-world Web Services, in particular in the bioinformatics domain, have been carried out using the Java WS- Mediator.     Context Verification and Adaptation in Web Service Composition

    Automatic web-service composition aims at automating the design of an appropriate combination of existing web services to achieve a global goal. Most proposed AWSC approaches only consider input/output parameters and quality features of services. However, most real-world web services have applicable conditions and require constraints to be considered according to the execution context of composite services. Constraint verification has a significant impact on the composition and execution of composite services. In particular, runtime verification of service constraints can result in the failure of the execution of composite services and eventually waste computational resources and may incur monetary costs. In addition, traditional adaptation approaches for web service composition consider recovery in case of failure when a service becomes unavailable. They do not take into account changes and limitations in service execution environment which potentially can affect the execution of a wide range of services. Externally-defined constraints are likely to be defined and become or cease to be applicable after the composite service has been deployed. In this thesis, we propose a novel approach to model and verify different types of constraints inside composite services. We not only consider input/output parameters but also the values that can be assigned to parameters during design and execution of composite services. In addition, we provide novel failure recovery and adaptation approaches for different types of constraints according to the execution context of composite services. In our solution, we develop a new structure including alternative composite services to recover broken composite services and adapt to external constraints. We finally propose a brokerage architecture including all proposed approaches for constraint-aware service composition and adaptation

    Developing front-end Web 2.0 technologies to access services, content and things in the future Internet

    The future Internet is expected to be composed of a mesh of interoperable web services accessible from all over the web. This approach has not yet caught on since global user?service interaction is still an open issue. This paper states one vision with regard to next-generation front-end Web 2.0 technology that will enable integrated access to services, contents and things in the future Internet. In this paper, we illustrate how front-ends that wrap traditional services and resources can be tailored to the needs of end users, converting end users into prosumers (creators and consumers of service-based applications). To do this, we propose an architecture that end users without programming skills can use to create front-ends, consult catalogues of resources tailored to their needs, easily integrate and coordinate front-ends and create composite applications to orchestrate services in their back-end. The paper includes a case study illustrating that current user-centred web development tools are at a very early stage of evolution.     Composition of context aware mobile services using a semantic context model

    Context-awareness has been regarded as an important feature for mobile services. However, only a few services are sensible to context and the features that are context-aware are still limited. Composition of Web services has received much interest in business-to-business or enterprise application, but not so much interest in business-to- consumer applications. This paper presents iCas, a novel architecture that enables the creation of context-aware services on the fly, and discusses its main components. We compare our approach with similar systems and point out the main differences and advantages. To explore context-awareness to support service composition, iCas uses SeCoM, a semantic model to represent context. The main parts of this model are explained as well the advantages of using a semantic model to represent context. We also describe the use of our approach in an university campus to provide pedagogical features and assist the socio-pedagogical interaction of various types of users

    Semi-automatic distribution pattern modeling of web service compositions using semantics

    Enterprise systems are frequently built by combining a number of discrete Web services together, a process termed composition. There are a number of architectural configurations or distribution patterns, which express how a composed system is to be deployed. Previously, we presented a Model Driven Architecture using UML 2.0, which took existing service interfaces as its input and generated an executable Web service composition, guided by a distribution pattern model. In this paper, we propose using Web service semantic descriptions in addition to Web service interfaces, to assist in the semi-automatic generation of the distribution pattern model. Web services described using semantic languages, such as OWL-S, can be automatically assessed for compatibility and their input and output messages can be mapped to each other
