    A Novel Adaptive Neural Network Constrained Control for Multi-Area Interconnected Power System with Hybrid Energy Storage

    This paper concentrates on the problem of control of a hybrid energy storage system (HESS) for an improved and optimized operation of load-frequency control (LFC) applications. The HESS consists of a supercapacitor served as the main power source, and a fuel cell served as the auxiliary power source. Firstly, a Hammerstein-type neural network (HNN) is proposed to identify the HESS system, which formulates the Hammerstein model with a nonlinear static gain in cascade with a linear dynamic block. It provides the model information for the controller to achieve the adaptive performance. Secondly, a feedforward neural network based on back-propagation training algorithm is designed to formulate the PID-type neural network (PIDNN), which is used for the adaptive control of HESS system. Meanwhile, a dynamic anti-windup signal is designed to solve the operational constraint of the HESS system. Then, an appropriate power reference signal for HESS can be generated. Thirdly, the stability and the convergence of the whole system are proved based on the Lyapunov stability theory. Finally, simulation experiments are followed through on a four-area interconnected power system to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme

    Comprehensive summary of solid oxide fuel cell control : a state-of-the-art review

    Hydrogen energy is a promising renewable resource for the sustainable development of society. As a key member of the fuel cell (FC) family, the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) has attracted a lot of attention because of characteristics such as having various sources as fuel and high energy conversion efficiency, and being pollution-free. SOFC is a highly coupled, nonlinear, and multivariable complex system, and thus it is very important to design an appropriate control strategy for an SOFC system to ensure its safe, reliable, and efficient operation. This paper undertakes a comprehensive review and detailed summary of the state-of-the-art control approaches of SOFC. These approaches are divided into eight categories of control: proportional integral differential (PID), adaptive (APC), robust, model predictive (MPC), fuzzy logic (FLC), fault-tolerant (FTC), intelligent and observer-based. The SOFC control approaches are carefully evaluated in terms of objective, design, application/scenario, robustness, complexity, and accuracy. Finally, five perspectives are proposed for future research directions

    Multi-agent control and operation of electric power distribution systems

    This dissertation presents operation and control strategies for electric power distribution systems containing distributed generators. First, models of microturbines and fuel cells are developed. These dynamic models are incorporated in a power system analysis package. Second, operation of these generators in a distribution system is addressed and load following schemes are designed. The penetration of distributed generators (DGs) into the power distribution system stability becomes an issue and so the control of those DGs becomes necessary. A decentralized control structure based on conventional controllers is designed for distributed generators using a new developed optimization technique called Guided Particle Swarm Optimization. However, the limitations of the conventional controllers do not satisfy the stability requirement of a power distribution system that has a high DG penetration level, which imposes the necessity of developing a new control structure able to overcome the limitations imposed by the fixed structure conventional controllers and limit the penetration of DGs in the overall transient stability of the distribution system. Third, a novel multi-agent based control architecture is proposed for transient stability enhancement for distribution systems with microturbines. The proposed control architecture is hierarchical with one supervisory global control agent and a distributed number of local control agents in the lower layer. Specifically, a central control center supervises and optimizes the overall process, while each microturbine is equipped with its own local control agent.;The control of naval shipboard electric power system is another application of distributed control with multi-agent based structure. In this proposal, the focus is to introduce the concept of multi-agent based control architecture to improve the stability of the shipboard power system during faulty conditions.     Reference Governors: From Theory to Practice

    Control systems that are subject to constraints due to physical limitations, hardware protection, or safety considerations have led to challenging control problems that have piqued the interest of control practitioners and theoreticians for many decades. In general, the design of constraint management schemes must meet several stringent requirements, for example: low computational burden, performance, recovery mechanisms from infeasibility conditions, robustness, and formulation simplicity. These requirements have been particularly difficult to meet for the following three classes of systems: stochastic systems, linear systems driven by unmodeled disturbances, and nonlinear systems. Hence, in this work, we develop three constraint management schemes, based on Reference Governor (RG), for these classes of systems. The first scheme, which is referred to as Stochastic RG, leverages the ideas of chance constraints to construct a Stochastic Robustly Invariant Maximal Output Admissible set (SR-MAS) in order to enforce constraints on stochastic systems. The second scheme, which is called Recovery RG (RRG), addresses the problem of recovery from infeasibility conditions by implementing a disturbance observer to update the MAS, and hence recover from constraint violations due to unmodeled disturbances. The third method addresses the problem of constraint satisfaction on nonlinear systems by decomposing the design of the constraint management strategy into two parts: enforcement at steady-state, and during transient. The former is achieved by using the forward and inverse steady-state characterization of the nonlinear system. The latter is achieved by implementing an RG-based approach, which employs a novel Robust Output Admissible Set (ROAS) that is computed using data obtained from the nonlinear system. Added to this, this dissertation includes a detailed literature review of existing constraint management schemes to compare and highlight advantages and disadvantages between them. Finally, all this study is supported by a systematic analysis, as well as numerical and experimental validation of the closed-loop systems performance on vehicle roll-over avoidance, turbocharged engine control, and inverted pendulum control problems

    Optimal control of a motor-integrated hybrid powertrain for a two-wheeled vehicle suitable for personal transportation

    The present research aims to propose an optimized configuration of the motor integrated power-train with an optimal controller suitable for small power-train based two wheeler automobile which can increase the system level efficiency without affecting drivability. This work will be the foundation for realizing the system in a production ready vehicle for the two wheeler OEM TVS Motor Company in India. A detailed power-train model is developed (from first principles) for the scooter vehicle, which is powered by a 110 cc spark ignition (SI) engine and coupled with two types of transmission, a continuous variable transmission (CVT) and a 4-speed manual transmission (MT). Both models are capable of simulating torque and NOx emission output of the SI engine and dynamic response of the full power-train. The torque production and emission outputs of the model are compared with experimental results available from TVS Motor Company. The CVT gear ratio model is developed using an indirect method and an analytical model. Both types of powertrain models are applied to perform a simulated study of fuel consumption, NOx emission and drivability study for a particular vehicle platform. In the next stage of work, the mathematical model for a brush-less direct current machine (BLDC) with the drive system and Li-Ion battery are developed. The models are verified and calibrated with the experimental results from TVS Motor Company. The BLDC machine is integrated with both the CVT and MT powertrain models in parallel hybrid configurations and a drive cycle simulation is conducted for different static assist levels by the electrical machines. The initial test confirms the need of optimal sizing of the powertrain components as well as an optimal control system. The detailed model of the powertrain is converted to a control-oriented model which is suitable for optimal control. This is followed by multi-objective optimization of different components of the motor-integrated powertrain using a single function as well as Pareto-Optimal methods. The objective function for the multi-objective optimization is proposed to reduce the fuel consumption with battery charge sustainability with least impact on the increase of financial cost and weight of the vehicle. The optimization is conducted by a nested methodology that involves Particle Swarm Optimization and a Non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm where, concurrently, a global optimal control is developed corresponding to the multi-objective design. The global optimal controller is designed using dynamic programming. The research is concluded with an optimal controller developed using the hp-collocation method. The objective function of the dynamic programming method and hp-collocation method is proposed to reduce fuel consumption with battery charge sustainability.Open Acces
