Digital Holography and 3D Imaging: introduction to the joint feature issue in Applied Optics and Journal of the Optical Society of America A.
This feature issue is a continuation of a tradition, since 2007, to follow the conclusion of the OSA Topical Meeting on Digital Holography and 3D Imaging (DH+3D). It addresses current research topics in digital holography (DH) and 3D imaging that are also in line with the topics of Applied Optics (AO) and the Journal of the Optical Society of America A (JOSA A)
Roadmap on digital holography [Invited]
This Roadmap article on digital holography provides an overview of a vast array of research activities in the field of digital holography. The paper consists of a series of 25 sections from the prominent experts in digital holography presenting various aspects of the field on sensing, 3D imaging and displays, virtual and augmented reality, microscopy, cell identification, tomography, label-free live cell imaging, and other applications. Each section represents the vision of its author to describe the significant progress, potential impact, important developments, and challenging issues in the field of digital holography
The Acoustic Hologram and Particle Manipulation with Structured Acoustic Fields
This book shows how arbitrary acoustic wavefronts can be encoded in the thickness proïŹle of a phase plate - the acoustic hologram. The workïŹow for design and implementation of these elements has been developed and is presented in this work along with examples in microparticle assembly, object propulsion and levitation in air. To complement these results, a fast thermographic measurement technique has been developed to scan and validate 3D ultrasound fields in a matter of seconds
Roadmap on holography
From its inception holography has proven an extremely productive and attractive area of research. While specific technical applications give rise to 'hot topics', and three-dimensional (3D) visualisation comes in and out of fashion, the core principals involved continue to lead to exciting innovations in a wide range of areas. We humbly submit that it is impossible, in any journal document of this type, to fully reflect current and potential activity; however, our valiant contributors have produced a series of documents that go no small way to neatly capture progress across a wide range of core activities. As editors we have attempted to spread our net wide in order to illustrate the breadth of international activity. In relation to this we believe we have been at least partially successful. This work was supported by Ministerio de EconomĂa, Industria y Competitividad (Spain) under projects FIS2017-82919-R (MINECO/AEI/FEDER, UE) and FIS2015-66570-P (MINECO/FEDER), and by Generalitat Valenciana (Spain) under project PROMETEO II/2015/015
Applications of Digital Holography: From Microscopy to 3D-Television
The paper gives an overview of the applications of digital holography based on the one hand on CCD-recording, computer storage, and numerical reconstruction of the wave
fields, and on the other hand on numerical calculation of computer generated holograms (CGH) and the transfer of these CGHs to spatial light modulators (SLM) for optical
reconstruction of the wave fields. The first mentioned type of digital holography finds applications in digital holographic microscopy, particle analysis, and interferometric form and deformation measurement, while the second type constitutes the basis for holographic 3D TV. The space-bandwidth-problem occuring in this context is addressed and first partial solutions are presented
A review of snapshot multidimensional optical imaging: Measuring photon tags in parallel
Multidimensional optical imaging has seen remarkable growth in the past decade. Rather than measuring only the two-dimensional spatial distribution of light, as in conventional photography, multidimensional optical imaging captures light in up to nine dimensions, providing unprecedented information about incident photonsâ spatial coordinates, emittance angles, wavelength, time, and polarization. Multidimensional optical imaging can be accomplished either by scanning or parallel acquisition. Compared with scanning-based imagers, parallel acquisitionâalso dubbed snapshot imagingâhas a prominent advantage in maximizing optical throughput, particularly when measuring a datacube of high dimensions. Here, we first categorize snapshot multidimensional imagers based on their acquisition and image reconstruction strategies, then highlight the snapshot advantage in the context of optical throughput, and finally we discuss their state-of-the-art implementations and applications
Holography
Holography - Basic Principles and Contemporary Applications is a collection of fifteen chapters, describing the basic principles of holography and some recent innovative developments in the field. The book is divided into three sections. The first, Understanding Holography, presents the principles of hologram recording illustrated with practical examples. A comprehensive review of diffraction in volume gratings and holograms is also presented. The second section, Contemporary Holographic Applications, is concerned with advanced applications of holography including sensors, holographic gratings, white-light viewable holographic stereograms. The third section of the book Digital Holography is devoted to digital hologram coding and digital holographic microscopy
