Recently, Software-Dened Radios (SDRs) has became a hot research topic in wireless communications eld. This is jointly due to the increasing request of reconfigurable and interoperable multi-standard radio systems able to learn from their surrounding environment and efficiently exploit the available frequency spectrum resources, so realizing the cognitive radio paradigm, and to the availability of reprogrammable hardware architectures providing the computing power necessary to meet the tight real-time constraints typical of the state-of-art wideband communications standards. Most SDR implementations are based on mixed architectures in which Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA), Digital Signal Processors (DSP) and General Purpose Processors (GPP) coexist. GPP-based solutions, even if providing the highest level of flexibility, are typically avoided because of their computational inefficiency and power consumption. Starting from these assumptions, this thesis tries to jointly face two of the main important issues in GPP-based SDR systems: the computational efficiency and the interoperability capacity. In the first part, this thesis presents the potential of a novel programming technique, named Memory Acceleration (MA), in which the memory resources typical of GPP-based systems are used to assist central processor in executing real-time signal processing operations. This technique, belonging to the classical computer-science optimization techniques known as Space-Time trade-offs, defines novel algorithmic methods to assist developers in designing their software-defined signal processing algorithms. In order to show its applicability some "real-world" case studies are presented together with the acceleration factor obtained. In the second part of the thesis, the interoperability issue in SDR systems is also considered. Existing software architectures, like the Software Communications Architecture (SCA), abstract the hardware/software components of a radio communications chain using a middleware like CORBA for providing full portability and interoperability to the implemented chain, called waveform in the SCA parlance. This feature is paid in terms of computational overhead introduced by the software communications middleware and this is one of the reasons why GPP-based architecture are generally discarded also for the implementation of narrow-band SCA-compliant communications standards. In this thesis we briefly analyse SCA architecture and an open-source SCA-compliant framework, ie. OSSIE, and provide guidelines to enable component-based multithreading programming and CPU affinity in that framework. We also detail the implementation of a real-time SCA-compliant waveform developed inside this modified framework, i.e. the VHF analogue aeronautical communications transceiver. Finally, we provide the proof of how it is possible to implement an efficient and interoperable real-time wideband SCA-compliant waveform, i.e. the AeroMACS waveform, on a GPP-based architecture by merging the acceleration factor provided by MA technique and the interoperability feature ensured by SCA architecture

This project thesis elaborates on designing a baseband processing blocks for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) physical layer using an FPGA. WiMAX provides broadband wireless access and uses OFDM as the essential modulation technique. The channel performance is badly affected due to synchronization mismatches between the transmitter and receiver ends so the transmitted signal received is not reliable as the OFDM deals with high data rate. This thesis includes the theory and concepts behind OFDM, WiMAX IEEE 802.16d standard and other blocks algorithms, its architectures used for designing as well as a presentation of how they are implemented. Here Altera’s FPGA has been used for targeting to the EP4SGX70HF35C2 device of the Stratix IV family. WiMAX use sophisticated digital signal processing techniques, which typically require a large number of mathematical computations. Here Stratix IV devices are ideally suited for these kinds of complex tasks because the DSP blocks have a combination of dedicated elements that perform multiplication, addition, subtraction, accumulation, summation, and dynamic shift operations. The WiMAX physical layer baseband processing architecture consists of various major modules which were simulated block wise in order to check its giving the correct output as required. The coding style used here is VHDL. The sub-blocks have been synthesized using Altera Quartus II v11. 0 and simulated using ModelSim Altera Edition 6.6d

Recently, issues surrounding wireless communications have risen to prominence because of the increase in the popularity of wireless applications. Bandwidth problems, and the difficulty of modulating signals across carriers, represent significant challenges. Every modulation scheme used to date has had limitations, and the use of the Discrete Fourier Transform in OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex) is no exception. The restriction on further development of OFDM lies primarily within the type of transform it uses in the heart of its system, Fourier transform. OFDM suffers from sensitivity to Peak to Average Power Ratio, carrier frequency offset and wasting some bandwidth to guard successive OFDM symbols. The discovery of the wavelet transform has opened up a number of potential applications from image compression to watermarking and encryption. Very recently, work has been done to investigate the potential of using wavelet transforms within the communication space. This research will further investigate a recently proposed, innovative, modulation technique, Orthogonal Wavelet Division Multiplex, which utilises the wavelet transform opening a new avenue for an alternative modulation scheme with some interesting potential characteristics. Wavelet transform has many families and each of those families has children which each differ in filter length. This research consider comprehensively investigates the new modulation scheme, and proposes multi-level dynamic sub-banding as a tool to adapt variable signal bandwidths. Furthermore, all compactly supported wavelet families and their associated children of those families are investigated and evaluated against each other and compared with OFDM. The linear computational complexity of wavelet transform is less than the logarithmic complexity of Fourier in OFDM. The more important complexity is the operational complexity which is cost effectiveness, such as the time response of the system, the memory consumption and the number of iterative operations required for data processing. Those complexities are investigated for all available compactly supported wavelet families and their children and compared with OFDM. The evaluation reveals which wavelet families perform more effectively than OFDM, and for each wavelet family identifies which family children perform the best. Based on these results, it is concluded that the wavelet modulation scheme has some interesting advantages over OFDM, such as lower complexity and bandwidth conservation of up to 25%, due to the elimination of guard intervals and dynamic bandwidth allocation, which result in better cost effectiveness

Antennas are a necessary and often critical component of all wireless systems, of which they share the ever-increasing complexity and the challenges of present and emerging trends. 5G, massive low-orbit satellite architectures (e.g. OneWeb), industry 4.0, Internet of Things (IoT), satcom on-the-move, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Autonomous Vehicles, all call for highly flexible systems, and antenna reconfigurability is an enabling part of these advances. The terminal segment is particularly crucial in this sense, encompassing both very compact antennas or low-profile antennas, all with various adaptability/reconfigurability requirements. This thesis work has dealt with hardware implementation issues of Radio Frequency (RF) antenna reconfigurability, and in particular with low-power General Purpose Platforms (GPP); the work has encompassed Software Defined Radio (SDR) implementation, as well as embedded low-power platforms (in particular on STM32 Nucleo family of micro-controller). The hardware-software platform work has been complemented with design and fabrication of reconfigurable antennas in standard technology, and the resulting systems tested. The selected antenna technology was antenna array with continuously steerable beam, controlled by voltage-driven phase shifting circuits. Applications included notably Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) deployed in the Italian scientific mission in Antarctica, in a traffic-monitoring case study (EU H2020 project), and into an innovative Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) antenna concept (patent application submitted). The SDR implementation focused on a low-cost and low-power Software-defined radio open-source platform with IEEE 802.11 a/g/p wireless communication capability. In a second embodiment, the flexibility of the SDR paradigm has been traded off to avoid the power consumption associated to the relevant operating system. Application field of reconfigurable antenna is, however, not limited to a better management of the energy consumption. The analysis has also been extended to satellites positioning application. A novel beamforming method has presented demonstrating improvements in the quality of signals received from satellites. Regarding those who deal with positioning algorithms, this advancement help improving precision on the estimated position

[EN] Nowadays, several communication standards are emerging and evolving, searching higher transmission rates, reliability and coverage. This expansion is primarily driven by the continued increase in consumption of mobile multimedia services due to the emergence of new handheld devices such as smartphones and tablets. One of the most significant techniques employed to meet these demands is the use of multiple transmit and receive antennas, known as MIMO systems. The use of this technology allows to increase the transmission rate and the quality of the transmission through the use of multiple antennas at the transmitter and receiver sides. MIMO technologies have become an essential key in several wireless standards such as WLAN, WiMAX and LTE. These technologies will be incorporated also in future standards, therefore is expected in the coming years a great deal of research in this field. Clearly, the study of MIMO systems is critical in the current investigation, however the problems that arise from this technology are very complex. High Performance Computing (HPC) systems, and specifically, modern hardware architectures as multi-core and many-cores (e.g Graphics Processing Units (GPU)) are playing a key role in the development of efficient and low-complexity algorithms for MIMO transmissions. Proof of this is that the number of scientific contributions and research projects related to its use has increased in the last years. Also, some high performance libraries have been implemented as tools for researchers involved in the development of future communication standards. Two of the most popular libraries are: IT++ that is a library based on the use of some optimized libraries for multi-core processors and the Communications System Toolbox designed for use with MATLAB, which uses GPU computing. However, there is not a library able to run on a heterogeneous platform using all the available resources. In view of the high computational requirements in MIMO application research and the shortage of tools able to satisfy them, we have made a special effort to develop a library to ease the development of adaptable parallel applications in accordance with the different architectures of the executing platform. The library, called MIMOPack, aims to implement efficiently using parallel computing, a set of functions to perform some of the critical stages of MIMO communication systems simulation. The main contribution of the thesis is the implementation of efficient Hard and Soft output detectors, since the detection stage is considered the most complex part of the communication process. These detectors are highly configurable and many of them include preprocessing techniques that reduce the computational cost and increase the performance. The proposed library shows three important features: portability, efficiency and easy of use. Current realease allows GPUs and multi-core computation, or even simultaneously, since it is designed to use on heterogeneous machines. The interface of the functions are common to all environments in order to simplify the use of the library. Moreover, some of the functions are callable from MATLAB increasing the portability of developed codes between different computing environments. According to the library design and the performance assessment, we consider that MIMOPack may facilitate industrial and academic researchers the implementation of scientific codes without having to know different programming languages and machine architectures. This will allow to include more complex algorithms in their simulations and obtain their results faster. This is particularly important in the industry, since the manufacturers work to analyze and to propose their own technologies with the aim that it will be approved as a standard. Thus allowing to enforce their intellectual property rights over their competitors, who should obtain the corresponding licenses to include these technologies into their products.[ES] En la actualidad varios estándares de comunicación están surgiendo buscando velocidades de transmisión más altas y mayor fiabilidad. Nonlinear Distortion in Wideband Radio Receivers and Analog-to-Digital Converters: Modeling and Digital Suppression

Emerging wireless communications systems aim to flexible and efficient usage of radio spectrum in order to increase data rates. The ultimate goal in this field is a cognitive radio. It employs spectrum sensing in order to locate spatially and temporally vacant spectrum chunks that can be used for communications. In order to achieve that, flexible and reconfigurable transceivers are needed. A software-defined radio can provide these features by having a highly-integrated wideband transceiver with minimum analog components and mostly relying on digital signal processing. This is also desired from size, cost, and power consumption point of view. However, several challenges arise, from which dynamic range is one of the most important. This is especially true on receiver side where several signals can be received simultaneously through a single receiver chain. In extreme cases the weakest signal can be almost 100 dB weaker than the strongest one. Due to the limited dynamic range of the receiver, the strongest signals may cause nonlinear distortion which deteriorates spectrum sensing capabilities and also reception of the weakest signals. The nonlinearities are stemming from the analog receiver components and also from analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). This is a performance bottleneck in many wideband communications and also radar receivers. The dynamic range challenges are already encountered in current devices, such as in wideband multi-operator receiver scenarios in mobile networks, and the challenges will have even more essential role in the future. This thesis focuses on aforementioned receiver scenarios and contributes to modeling and digital suppression of nonlinear distortion. A behavioral model for direct-conversion receiver nonlinearities is derived and it jointly takes into account RF, mixer, and baseband nonlinearities together with I/Q imbalance. The model is then exploited in suppression of receiver nonlinearities. The considered method is based on adaptive digital post-processing and does not require any analog hardware modification. It is able to extract all the necessary information directly from the received waveform in order to suppress the nonlinear distortion caused by the strongest blocker signals inside the reception band.In addition, the nonlinearities of ADCs are considered. Even if the dynamic range of the analog receiver components is not limiting the performance, ADCs may cause considerable amount of nonlinear distortion. It can originate, e.g., from undeliberate variations of quantization levels. Furthermore, the received waveform may exceed the nominal voltage range of the ADC due to signal power variations. This causes unintentional signal clipping which creates severe nonlinear distortion. In this thesis, a Fourier series based model is derived for the signal clipping caused by ADCs. Furthermore, four different methods are considered for suppressing ADC nonlinearities, especially unintentional signal clipping. The methods exploit polynomial modeling, interpolation, or symbol decisions for suppressing the distortion. The common factor is that all the methods are based on digital post-processing and are able to continuously adapt to variations in the received waveform and in the receiver itself. This is a very important aspect in wideband receivers, especially in cognitive radios, when the flexibility and state-of-the-art performance is required

Our society has developed into a networked information society, in which all aspects of human life are interconnected via the Internet — the backbone through which a significant part of communications traffic is routed. This makes the Internet arguably the most important piece of critical infrastructure in the world. Securing Internet communications for everyone using it is extremely important, as the continuing growth of the networked information society relies upon fast, reliable and secure communications. A prominent threat to the security and privacy of Internet users is mass surveillance of Internet communications. The methods and tools used to implement mass surveillance capabilities on the Internet pose a danger to the security of all communications, not just the intended targets. When we continue to further build the networked information upon the unreliable foundation of the Internet we encounter increasingly complex problems, which are the main focus of this dissertation. As the reliance on communication technology grows in a society, so does the importance of information security. At this stage, information security issues become separated from the purely technological domain and begin to affect everyone in society. The approach taken in this thesis is therefore both technical and socio-technical. The research presented in this PhD thesis builds security in to the networked information society and provides parameters for further development of a safe and secure networked information society. This is achieved by proposing improvements on a multitude of layers. In the technical domain we present an efficient design flow for secure embedded devices that use cryptographic primitives in a resource-constrained environment, examine and analyze threats to biometric passport and electronic voting systems, observe techniques used to conduct mass Internet surveillance, and analyze the security of Finnish web user passwords. In the socio-technical domain we examine surveillance and how it affects the citizens of a networked information society, study methods for delivering efficient security education, examine what is essential security knowledge for citizens, advocate mastery over surveillance data by the targeted citizens in the networked information society, and examine the concept of forced trust that permeates all topics examined in this work.Yhteiskunta, jossa elämme, on muovautunut teknologian kehityksen myötä todelliseksi tietoyhteiskunnaksi.
