Description of the US Army small-scale 2-meter rotor test system

    Get PDF
A small-scale powered rotor model was designed for use as a research tool in the exploratory testing of rotors and helicopter models. The model, which consists of a 29 hp rotor drive system, a four-blade fully articulated rotor, and a fuselage, was designed to be simple to operate and maintain in wind tunnels of moderate size and complexity. Two six-component strain-gauge balances are used to provide independent measurement of the rotor and fuselage aerodynamic loads. Commercially available standardized hardware and equipment were used to the maximum extent possible, and specialized parts were designed so that they could be fabricated by normal methods without using highly specialized tooling. The model was used in a hover test of three rotors having different planforms and in a forward flight investigation of a 21-percent-scale model of a U.S. Army scout helicopter equipped with a mast-mounted sight

    Get PDF
The present paper discusses certain aspects of dynamic modeling of the harmonic drive. In particular, a new original dynamic model of a harmonic drive has been proposed for a power transmission system. The model takes account of nonlinear changes in stiffness, as well as damping. The proposed model of a harmonic drive in the power transmission system is investigated in the Matlab-Simulink environment. Utilization of the identified, developed dynamic model will allow to expand the knowledge about torsional vibration which are present in power transmission systems equipped with harmonic drive as well as it will contribute to a reduction of expenses connected with performing costly experimental tests

Statistical analysis of the influence of tooth geometry in the performance of a harmonic drive

    Get PDF
The objective of this research is to determine the influence of gear tooth geometrical variations in the performance of a double wave harmonic drive through statistical analysis. This work incorporates state of the art analytical and numerical models to evaluate kinematic error, load capacity, bending fatigue strength, and pitting. The geometric variables considered in this study include gear modulus, pressure angle, and tooth correction factor. The statistical analysis follows a three-level full-factorial design of experiments. Nonlinear dynamic simulation is accompanied by finite element analysis to estimate contact and bending stresses. Largest bending fatigue strength is also determined. Results demonstrate that gear modulus is the geometric parameter with prevalent influence on the kinematic error, and pitting life is rather high for all geometric variables considered

Bifurcations and chaos in a gear assembly with clearances for solar array drive assembly

Solar array drive assembly is an important part of the spacecraft. It is used to rotate the solar panels. The gear assembly in solar array drive assembly plays a key role in transferring power safely. Nonlinear behavior of gear assembly, like the chaotic motion, can highly affect the stability and operating life of solar array drive assembly. Clearances in gear assembly which were neglected for simplification in past years have increased the risk of failure and become a problem in accurate control. To investigate the clearances effect on nonlinear behavior, this paper establishes a new dynamic model of the gear assembly with bilateral clearances. The main difference comparing to general spur gears is its unique hysteresis stiffness may also influence the clearance effects. Transformation of the hysteresis loop is observed from theoretical equations using different parameters. Bifurcations and chaotic analysis of the system are carried out by numerical simulations in this study. The results show that the variation of clearances may induce the chaotic behavior into gear transmission even when the primary response is stable. When the system step into the chaotic region, it has a high risk of unstable vibration and fuzzy output. The influence of excitation frequency on the chaotic motion of the system is also provided. Chaos thresholds are calculated to avoid nonlinear behavior of the system in design and control. This study makes it possible to predict the unstable clearance interval in this system and avoid the system stepping into chaotic motion. Analyzing and predicting the chaotic behaviors can contribute to the further studies on design and control of the solar array drive assembly

Many of the operations performed at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) are dangerous and repetitive tasks which make them ideal candidates for robotic applications. For one specific application, KSC is currently in the process of designing and constructing a robot called the Automated Radiator Inspection Device (ARID), to inspect the radiator panels on the orbiter. The following aspects of the ARID project are discussed: modeling of the ARID; design of control algorithms; and nonlinear based simulation of the ARID. Recommendations to assist KSC personnel in the successful completion of the ARID project are given

Robust tuning of robot control systems

The computed torque control problem is examined for a robot arm with flexible, geared, joint drive systems which are typical in many industrial robots. The standard computed torque algorithm is not directly applicable to this class of manipulators because of the dynamics introduced by the joint drive system. The proposed approach to computed torque control combines a computed torque algorithm with torque controller at each joint. Three such control schemes are proposed. The first scheme uses the joint torque control system currently implemented on the robot arm and a novel form of the computed torque algorithm. The other two use the standard computed torque algorithm and a novel model following torque control system based on model following techniques. Standard tasks and performance indices are used to evaluate the performance of the controllers. Both numerical simulations and experiments are used in evaluation. The study shows that all three proposed systems lead to improved tracking performance over a conventional PD controller

Gear wear process monitoring using acoustic signals

Airborne acoustic signals contain valuable information from machines and can be detected remotely for condition monitoring. However, the signal is often seriously contaminated by various noises from the environment as well as nearby machines. This paper presents an acoustic based method of monitoring a two stage helical gearbox, a common power transmission system used in various industries. A single microphone is employed to measure the acoustics of the gearbox under-going a run-to-failure test. To suppress the background noise and interferences from nearby ma-chines a modulation signal bispectrum (MSB) analysis is applied to the signal. It is shown that the analysis allows the meshing frequency components and the associated shaft modulating components to be captured more accurately to set up a clear monitoring trend to indicate the tooth wear of the gears under test. The results demonstrate that acoustic signals in conjunction with efficient signal processing methods provide an effective monitoring of the gear transmission process

Vibration transmission through rolling element bearings in geared rotor system, part 1

    Get PDF
A mathematical model is proposed to examine the vibration transmission through rolling element bearings in geared rotor systems. Current bearing models, based on either ideal boundary conditions for the shaft or purely translational stiffness element description, cannot explain how the vibratory motion may be transmitted from the rotating shaft to the casing. This study clarifies this issue qualitatively and quantitatively by developing a comprehensive bearing stiffness matrix of dimension 6 model for the precision rolling element bearings from basic principles. The proposed bearing formulation is extended to analyze the overall geared rotor system dynamics including casing and mounts. The bearing stiffness matrix is included in discrete system models using lumped parameter and/or dynamic finite element techniques. Eigensolution and forced harmonic response due to rotating mass unbalance or kinematic transmission error excitation for a number of examples are computed

Nonlinear behavior of a spur gear pair transmission system with backlash

In this paper, the nonlinear vibration characteristics of spur gear-rotor system and the interactions among of gear shaft, and bearing with backlash subjected to internal/external excitation are systematically investigated. The two-degree-of-freedom purely torsional generalized lumped parameter model of the spur gear system with meshing stiffness, backlash, transmission error and external periodic excitation is established. The Newmark method is used to solve simultaneously the differential equations for analysis the vibration response characteristics as well as the effects of rotational speed, backlash and mesh damping coefficient on the dynamic characteristics of the spur gear system. The numerical results clearly reveal that the system exhibits an increase mesh damping coefficient and a decrease backlash can reduce the degree of gear nonlinearity effect, which makes the meshing state of spur gear system change from double-sided impact, single-sided impact to no impact. In addition, the rotational speed has a significant effect upon the dynamic response of the system, which shows that designing a gear system to operate at a high rotational speed should be avoided especially when the rotational speed is close to the system’s natural frequency and half of the natural frequency. The results presented in this study provide an understanding of the operating conditions under which undesirable dynamic motion takes place in a spur gear system and therefore serve as a useful source of reference for engineers in designing and controlling such systems
