A New Reduction Scheme for Gaussian Sum Filters
In many signal processing applications it is required to estimate the
unobservable state of a dynamic system from its noisy measurements. For linear
dynamic systems with Gaussian Mixture (GM) noise distributions, Gaussian Sum
Filters (GSF) provide the MMSE state estimate by tracking the GM posterior.
However, since the number of the clusters of the GM posterior grows
exponentially over time, suitable reduction schemes need to be used to maintain
the size of the bank in GSF. In this work we propose a low computational
complexity reduction scheme which uses an initial state estimation to find the
active noise clusters and removes all the others. Since the performance of our
proposed method relies on the accuracy of the initial state estimation, we also
propose five methods for finding this estimation. We provide simulation results
showing that with suitable choice of the initial state estimation (based on the
shape of the noise models), our proposed reduction scheme provides better state
estimations both in terms of accuracy and precision when compared with other
reduction methods
Maximizing the Sum Rate in Cellular Networks Using Multi-Convex Optimization
In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm to maximize the sum rate in
interference-limited scenarios where each user decodes its own message with the
presence of unknown interferences and noise considering the
signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio. It is known that the problem of
adapting the transmit and receive filters of the users to maximize the sum rate
with a sum transmit power constraint is non-convex. Our novel approach is to
formulate the sum rate maximization problem as an equivalent multi-convex
optimization problem by adding two sets of auxiliary variables. An iterative
algorithm which alternatingly adjusts the system variables and the auxiliary
variables is proposed to solve the multi-convex optimization problem. The
proposed algorithm is applied to a downlink cellular scenario consisting of
several cells each of which contains a base station serving several mobile
stations. We examine the two cases, with or without several half-duplex
amplify-and-forward relays assisting the transmission. A sum power constraint
at the base stations and a sum power constraint at the relays are assumed.
Finally, we show that the proposed multi-convex formulation of the sum rate
maximization problem is applicable to many other wireless systems in which the
estimated data symbols are multi-affine functions of the system variables.Comment: 24 pages, 5 figure
Innovation Rate Sampling of Pulse Streams with Application to Ultrasound Imaging
Signals comprised of a stream of short pulses appear in many applications
including bio-imaging and radar. The recent finite rate of innovation
framework, has paved the way to low rate sampling of such pulses by noticing
that only a small number of parameters per unit time are needed to fully
describe these signals. Unfortunately, for high rates of innovation, existing
sampling schemes are numerically unstable. In this paper we propose a general
sampling approach which leads to stable recovery even in the presence of many
pulses. We begin by deriving a condition on the sampling kernel which allows
perfect reconstruction of periodic streams from the minimal number of samples.
We then design a compactly supported class of filters, satisfying this
condition. The periodic solution is extended to finite and infinite streams,
and is shown to be numerically stable even for a large number of pulses. High
noise robustness is also demonstrated when the delays are sufficiently
separated. Finally, we process ultrasound imaging data using our techniques,
and show that substantial rate reduction with respect to traditional ultrasound
sampling schemes can be achieved.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figure

A number of methods have been proposed in the literature for estimating scene-structure and ego-motion from a sequence of images using dynamical models. Although all methods may be derived from a "natural" dynamical model within a unified framework, from an engineering perspective there are a number of trade-offs that lead to different strategies depending upon the specific applications and the goals one is targeting.
Which one is the winning strategy? In this paper we analyze the properties of the dynamical models that originate from each strategy under a variety of experimental conditions. For each model we assess the accuracy of the estimates, their robustness to measurement noise, sensitivity to initial conditions and visual angle, effects of the bas-relief ambiguity and occlusions, dependence upon the number of image measurements and their sampling rate
Successive Integer-Forcing and its Sum-Rate Optimality
Integer-forcing receivers generalize traditional linear receivers for the
multiple-input multiple-output channel by decoding integer-linear combinations
of the transmitted streams, rather then the streams themselves. Previous works
have shown that the additional degree of freedom in choosing the integer
coefficients enables this receiver to approach the performance of
maximum-likelihood decoding in various scenarios. Nonetheless, even for the
optimal choice of integer coefficients, the additive noise at the equalizer's
output is still correlated. In this work we study a variant of integer-forcing,
termed successive integer-forcing, that exploits these noise correlations to
improve performance. This scheme is the integer-forcing counterpart of
successive interference cancellation for traditional linear receivers.
Similarly to the latter, we show that successive integer-forcing is capacity
achieving when it is possible to optimize the rate allocation to the different
streams. In comparison to standard successive interference cancellation
receivers, the successive integer-forcing receiver offers more possibilities
for capacity achieving rate tuples, and in particular, ones that are more
