On approximate decidability of minimal programs
An index in a numbering of partial-recursive functions is called minimal
if every lesser index computes a different function from . Since the 1960's
it has been known that, in any reasonable programming language, no effective
procedure determines whether or not a given index is minimal. We investigate
whether the task of determining minimal indices can be solved in an approximate
sense. Our first question, regarding the set of minimal indices, is whether
there exists an algorithm which can correctly label 1 out of indices as
either minimal or non-minimal. Our second question, regarding the function
which computes minimal indices, is whether one can compute a short list of
candidate indices which includes a minimal index for a given program. We give
some negative results and leave the possibility of positive results as open
questions
Universal codes of the natural numbers
A code of the natural numbers is a uniquely-decodable binary code of the
natural numbers with non-decreasing codeword lengths, which satisfies Kraft's
inequality tightly. We define a natural partial order on the set of codes, and
show how to construct effectively a code better than a given sequence of codes,
in a certain precise sense. As an application, we prove that the existence of a
scale of codes (a well-ordered set of codes which contains a code better than
any given code) is independent of ZFC.Comment: 11 page
Strong Turing Degrees for Additive BSS RAM's
For the additive real BSS machines using only constants 0 and 1 and order
tests we consider the corresponding Turing reducibility and characterize some
semi-decidable decision problems over the reals. In order to refine,
step-by-step, a linear hierarchy of Turing degrees with respect to this model,
we define several halting problems for classes of additive machines with
different abilities and construct further suitable decision problems. In the
construction we use methods of the classical recursion theory as well as
techniques for proving bounds resulting from algebraic properties. In this way
we extend a known hierarchy of problems below the halting problem for the
additive machines using only equality tests and we present a further
subhierarchy of semi-decidable problems between the halting problems for the
additive machines using only equality tests and using order tests,
respectively
