Robust streaming in delay tolerant networks
Delay Tolerant Networks (DTN) do not provide any end to end connectivity guarantee. Thus, transporting data over such networks is a tough challenge as most of Internet applications assume a form of persistent end to end connection. While research in DTN has mainly addressed the problem of routing in various mobility contexts with the aim to improve bundle delay delivery and data delivery ratio, little attention has been paid to applications. This paper investigates the support of streaming-like applications over DTN. We identify how DTN characteristics impact on the overall performances of these applications and present Tetrys, a transport layer mechanism, which enables robust streaming over DTN. on the fly coding mechanism able to ensure full reliability without retransmission and fast in-order bundle delivery in comparison to classical erasure coding schemes. We evaluate our Tetrys prototype on real DTN connectivity traces captured from the Rollerblading tour in Paris. Simulations show that on average, Tetrys clearly outperforms all other reliability schemes in terms of bundles delivery service
Over provisioning-centric QoS-routing mechanism for the communication paradigm of future internet 4WARD proposal
The FP7 4WARD clean-slate Project envisions overcoming the limitations of current Internet by redefining it to efficiently support complex value-added sessions and services, such as location-based, health-care, critical-mission, and geo processing. The list of networking innovations from 4WARD’s Future Internet (FI) proposal includes a new connectivity paradigm called Generic Path (GP), a common representation for all communications. From the networking point of view, a GP is mapped to a communication path for data propagation. For that, GP architecture relies on routing mechanism for selecting best communication paths. In order to assure reliable communications, the routing mechanism must efficiently provision QoS-aware multi-party capable paths, with robustness functions, while keeping network performance. Therefore, this paper proposes the QoS-Routing and Resource Control (QoS-RRC) mechanism to deal with the hereinabove requirements by means of an over provisioning-centric (bandwidth and paths) approach. QoS-RRC achieves scalability by avoiding per-flow operations (e.g., signaling, state storage, etc.). Initial QoS-RRC performance evaluation was carried out in Network Simulator v.2 (NS-2), enabling drastic reduction of overall signaling exchanges compared to per-flow solutions
Solutions for vehicular communications: a review
Vehicular networks experience a number of unique challenges due to the high mobility of vehicles and highly dynamic network topology, short contact durations, disruption intermittent connectivity, significant loss rates, node density, and frequent network fragmentation. All these issues have a profound impact on routing strategies in these networks. This paper gives an insight about available solutions on related literature for vehicular communications. It overviews and compares the most relevant approaches for data communication in these networks, discussing their influence on routing strategies. Issues in providing a reliable multicast facility
Issues involved in point-to-multipoint communication are presented and the literature for proposed solutions and approaches surveyed. Particular attention is focused on the ideas and implementations that align with the requirements of the environment of interest. The attributes of multicast receiver groups that might lead to useful classifications, what the functionality of a management scheme should be, and how the group management module can be implemented are examined. The services that multicasting facilities can offer are presented, followed by mechanisms within the communications protocol that implements these services. The metrics of interest when evaluating a reliable multicast facility are identified and applied to four transport layer protocols that incorporate reliable multicast
Enhancing the 3GPP V2X architecture with information-centric networking
Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications allow a vehicle to interact with other vehicles and with communication parties in its vicinity (e.g., road-side units, pedestrian users, etc.) with the primary goal of making the driving and traveling experience safer, smarter and more comfortable. A wide set of V2X-tailored specifications have been identified by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) with focus on the design of architecture enhancements and a flexible air interface to ensure ultra-low latency, highly reliable and high-throughput connectivity as the ultimate aim. This paper discusses the potential of leveraging Information-Centric Networking (ICN) principles in the 3GPP architecture for V2X communications. We consider Named Data Networking (NDN) as reference ICN architecture and elaborate on the specific design aspects, required changes and enhancements in the 3GPP V2X architecture to enable NDN-based data exchange as an alternative/complementary solution to traditional IP networking, which barely matches the dynamics of vehicular environments. Performance of active multicast congestion control
This paper aims to provide insight into the behavior of congestion control mechanisms for reliable multicast protocols. A multicast congestion control based on active networks has been proposed and simulated using ns-2 over a network topology obtained using the Tiers tool. The congestion control mechanism has been simulated under different network conditions and with different settings of its configuration parameters. The objective is to analyze its performance and the impact of the different configuration parameters on its behavior. The simulation results show that the performance of the protocol is good in terms of delay and bandwidth utilization. The compatibility of the protocol with TCP flows has not been demonstrated, but the simulations performed show that by altering the parameter settings, the proportion of total bandwidth taken up by the two types of flow, multicast and TCP, may be modified.Publicad
