Towards automated visual surveillance using gait for identity recognition and tracking across multiple non-intersecting cameras
Despite the fact that personal privacy has become a major concern, surveillance technology is now becoming ubiquitous in modern society. This is mainly due to the increasing number of crimes as well as the essential necessity to provide secure and safer environment. Recent research studies have confirmed now the possibility of recognizing people by the way they walk i.e. gait. The aim of this research study is to investigate the use of gait for people detection as well as identification across different cameras. We present a new approach for people tracking and identification between different non-intersecting un-calibrated stationary cameras based on gait analysis. A vision-based markerless extraction method is being deployed for the derivation of gait kinematics as well as anthropometric measurements in order to produce a gait signature. The novelty of our approach is motivated by the recent research in biometrics and forensic analysis using gait. The experimental results affirmed the robustness of our approach to successfully detect walking people as well as its potency to extract gait features for different camera viewpoints achieving an identity recognition rate of 73.6 % processed for 2270 video sequences. Furthermore, experimental results confirmed the potential of the proposed method for identity tracking in real surveillance systems to recognize walking individuals across different views with an average recognition rate of 92.5 % for cross-camera matching for two different non-overlapping views.<br/
3D scanning of cultural heritage with consumer depth cameras
Three dimensional reconstruction of cultural heritage objects is an expensive and time-consuming process. Recent consumer real-time depth acquisition devices, like Microsoft Kinect, allow very fast and simple acquisition of 3D views. However 3D scanning with such devices is a challenging task due to the limited accuracy and reliability of the acquired data. This paper introduces a 3D reconstruction pipeline suited to use consumer depth cameras as hand-held scanners for cultural heritage objects. Several new contributions have been made to achieve this result. They include an ad-hoc filtering scheme that exploits the model of the error on the acquired data and a novel algorithm for the extraction of salient points exploiting both depth and color data. Then the salient points are used within a modified version of the ICP algorithm that exploits both geometry and color distances to precisely align the views even when geometry information is not sufficient to constrain the registration. The proposed method, although applicable to generic scenes, has been tuned to the acquisition of sculptures and in this connection its performance is rather interesting as the experimental results indicate
Review of Person Re-identification Techniques
Person re-identification across different surveillance cameras with disjoint
fields of view has become one of the most interesting and challenging subjects
in the area of intelligent video surveillance. Although several methods have
been developed and proposed, certain limitations and unresolved issues remain.
In all of the existing re-identification approaches, feature vectors are
extracted from segmented still images or video frames. Different similarity or
dissimilarity measures have been applied to these vectors. Some methods have
used simple constant metrics, whereas others have utilised models to obtain
optimised metrics. Some have created models based on local colour or texture
information, and others have built models based on the gait of people. In
general, the main objective of all these approaches is to achieve a
higher-accuracy rate and lowercomputational costs. This study summarises
several developments in recent literature and discusses the various available
methods used in person re-identification. Specifically, their advantages and

Human detection in surveillance videos and its applications - a review
Detecting human beings accurately in a visual surveillance system is crucial for diverse application areas including abnormal event detection, human gait characterization, congestion analysis, person identification, gender classification and fall detection for elderly people. The first step of the detection process is to detect an object which is in motion. Object detection could be performed using background subtraction, optical flow and spatio-temporal filtering techniques. Once detected, a moving object could be classified as a human being using shape-based, texture-based or motion-based features. A comprehensive review with comparisons on available techniques for detecting human beings in surveillance videos is presented in this paper. The characteristics of few benchmark datasets as well as the future research directions on human detection have also been discussed
Employing a RGB-D Sensor for Real-Time Tracking of Humans across Multiple Re-Entries in a Smart Environment
The term smart environment refers to physical
spaces equipped with sensors feeding into adaptive algorithms
that enable the environment to become sensitive and
responsive to the presence and needs of its occupants. People
with special needs, such as the elderly or disabled people,
stand to benefit most from such environments as they offer
sophisticated assistive functionalities supporting independent
living and improved safety. In a smart environment, the key
issue is to sense the location and identity of its users. In this
paper, we intend to tackle the problems of detecting and
tracking humans in a realistic home environment by exploiting
the complementary nature of (synchronized) color and depth
images produced by a low-cost consumer-level RGB-D
camera. Our system selectively feeds the complementary data
emanating from the two vision sensors to different algorithmic
modules which together implement three sequential
components: (1) object labeling based on depth data
clustering, (2) human re-entry identification based on
comparing visual signatures extracted from the color (RGB)
information, and (3) human tracking based on the fusion of
both depth and RGB data. Experimental results show that this
division of labor improves the systemâs efficiency and
classification performance
Gait Analysis and Recognition for Automated Visual Surveillance
Human motion analysis has received a great attention from researchers in the last decade due to its potential use in different applications such as automated visual surveillance. This field of research focuses on the perception and recognition of human activities, including people identification. We explore a new approach for walking pedestrian detection in an unconstrained outdoor environment. The proposed algorithm is based on gait motion as the rhythm of the footprint pattern of walking people is considered the stable and characteristic feature for the classification of moving objects. The novelty of our approach is motivated by the latest research for people identification using gait. The experimental results confirmed the robustness of our method to discriminate between single walking subject, groups of people and vehicles with a successful detection rate of 100%. Furthermore, the results revealed the potential of our method to extend visual surveillance systems to recognize walking people. Furthermore, we propose a new approach to extract human joints (vertex positions) using a model-based method. The spatial templates describing the human gait motion are produced via gait analysis performed on data collected from manual labeling. The Elliptic Fourier Descriptors are used to represent the motion models in a parametric form. The heel strike data is exploited to reduce the dimensionality of the parametric models. People walk normal to the viewing plane, as major gait information is available in a sagittal view. The ankle, knee and hip joints are successfully extracted with high accuracy for indoor and outdoor data. In this way, we have established a baseline analysis which can be deployed in recognition, marker-less analysis and other areas. The experimental results confirmed the robustness of the model-based approach to recognise walking subjects with a correct classification rate of 95% using purely the dynamic features derived from the joint motion. Therefore, this confirms the early psychological theories claiming that the discriminative features for motion perception and people recognition are embedded in gait kinematics. Furthermore, to quantify the intrusive nature of gait recognition we explore the effects of the different covariate factors on the performance of gait recognition. The covariate factors include footwear, clothing, carrying conditions and walking speed. As far as the author can determine, this is the first major study of its kind in this field to analyse the covariate factors using a model-based method
