    On the relation between the base of an EI algebra and word graphs

Neurocognitive informatics is a new, emerging field that should help to improve the matching of artificial and natural systems, and inspire better computational algorithms to solve problems that are still beyond the reach of machines.     Machine learning and its applications in reliability analysis systems

    In this thesis, we are interested in exploring some aspects of Machine Learning (ML) and its application in the Reliability Analysis systems (RAs). We begin by investigating some ML paradigms and their- techniques, go on to discuss the possible applications of ML in improving RAs performance, and lastly give guidelines of the architecture of learning RAs. Our survey of ML covers both levels of Neural Network learning and Symbolic learning. In symbolic process learning, five types of learning and their applications are discussed: rote learning, learning from instruction, learning from analogy, learning from examples, and learning from observation and discovery. The Reliability Analysis systems (RAs) presented in this thesis are mainly designed for maintaining plant safety supported by two functions: risk analysis function, i.e., failure mode effect analysis (FMEA) ; and diagnosis function, i.e., real-time fault location (RTFL). Three approaches have been discussed in creating the RAs. According to the result of our survey, we suggest currently the best design of RAs is to embed model-based RAs, i.e., MORA (as software) in a neural network based computer system (as hardware). However, there are still some improvement which can be made through the applications of Machine Learning. By implanting the 'learning element', the MORA will become learning MORA (La MORA) system, a learning Reliability Analysis system with the power of automatic knowledge acquisition and inconsistency checking, and more.     On Fuzzy Concepts

    In this paper we try to combine two approaches. One is the theory of knowledge graphs in which concepts are represented by graphs. The other is the axiomatic theory of fuzzy sets (AFS). The discussion will focus on the idea of fuzzy concept. It will be argued that the fuzziness of a concept in natural language is mainly due to the difference in interpretation that people give to a certain word. As different interpretations lead to different knowledge graphs, the notion of fuzzy concept should be describable in terms of sets of graphs. This leads to a natural introduction of membership values for elements of graphs. Using these membership values we apply AFS theory as well as an alternative approach to calculate fuzzy decision trees, that can be used to determine the most relevant elements of a concept

    How many tests do you need to diagnose Learning Disabilities?

    The diagnosis of Learning Disabilities (LD) is frequently subject to cognitive biases. In Italy, minimal diagnostic standards have been identified during a national Consensus Conference (2010). However, specialists use different protocols to assess reading and cognitive abilities. Thus, we propose to support LDs diagnosis with Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). Clinical results from 203 reports were input to investigate which ones can predict LD diagnosis. In addition, correlations among LDs were explored. Preliminary results show that ANNs can be useful to support a clinical diagnosis of LDs with an 81.93% average accuracy, and, under certain conditions, with a 99% certainty. Additionally, the 10 most meaningful tests for each LD have been identified and significant correlations between dyscalculia and dyslexia were found

We have to navigate between the knowledge waves brought by several areas of the human learning: cognitive psychology, artificial intelligence, philosophy, linguistics, ergonomy, control systems engineering, neurophysiology, sociology, computer sciences, among others. At the present moment, all these disciplines seek to be close each other to generate synergy. It is necessary to homogenize the different nomenclatures and to make that each one can benefit from the results and advances found in the other. Accidents like TMI, Chernobyl, Challenger, Bhopal, and others demonstrated that the human beings shall deal with complex systems that are created by the technological evolution more carefully. The great American writer Allan Bloom died recently wrote in his book 'The Closing of the American Mind' (1987) about the universities curriculum that are commonly separated in tight departments. This was a necessity of the industrial revolution that put emphasis in practical courses in order to graduate specialists in many fields. However, due the great complexity of our technological world, we feel the necessity to integrate again those disciplines that one day were separated to make possible their fast development. This Report is a modest trial to do this integration in a holistic way, trying to capture the best tendencies in those areas of the human learning mentioned in the first lines above. I expect that it can be useful to those professionals who, like me, would desire to build better human-machine systems in order to avoid those accidents also mentioned above

    The Effects of Serial Position, Evaluation Format, and Behavioral Isolate on Verbal and Nonverbal Clinical Cue Recognition and Performance Ratings

    Standardized patients are individuals trained to realistically portray specific physical and psychological symptoms and evaluate healthcare trainees on their patient interaction skills. Prior research suggests that individual differences among standardized patients often result in assessment variance. This study examined the effects of cue serial position and evaluation format on individuals\u27 perceptual awareness and recognition accuracy of verbal and nonverbal clinical cues. It was predicted that implementing periodic evaluations would reduce participant working memory load and permit better awareness and recognition of relevant clinical cues than the traditional post-scenario evaluation format. The concurrent evaluation benefit was also expected to mitigate the well-documented serial position decrement for information occurring in the middle of a scenario. The results suggested that verbal and nonverbal cues appearing early or late in the scenario were generally more salient than those appearing mid-scenario, but observers were better able to recognize both when permitted to offload working memory through periodic evaluation. The study also investigated the impact of a single inconsistent, unprofessional behavior exhibited by the simulated healthcare provider (SHP) on participant ratings of the SHP\u27s clinical competence. The behavioral isolate did not influence participants\u27 overall rating regardless of where it occurred in the scenario. Further, the isolate affected the segmental ratings of both evaluation groups when embedded early in the scenario and also affected the ratings of the concurrent evaluation group when embedded later in the scenario. This implies a reluctance on the part of retrospective participants to integrate new or conflicting information as the scenario progressed and further suggests that a successful SHP performance is unlikely to be negatively impacted by a single isolated act of unprofessionalism
